Glasgow’s New Home Of Jazz Opens Its Doors The Blue Arrow Club, Glasgow’s new home of Jazz, officially launched last month. With decades of experience the team behind the Blue Arrow have for many years been finessing the art of making a room bustle with life, driven by music, mood and the innate need to be moved, both physically and emotionally. Willie Knox, Cheryl Chadha and Iain Maclean have come together to give Jazz the home it deserves in Scotland’s Music City. A basement Jazz venue in the heart of the city, the Blue Arrow is decorated with deeply coloured Timorous Beasties wallpaper, wood panelling and red theatre lights washing the brick walls. Cabaret tables with chequered cloths draw the eye to the obvious focus of the room - a stage, bathed in light with a piano at the centre. With The Rio Club Pop up’s forming a key part of the Glasgow Jazz festival for 3 years, and Scat 23 Jazz giving an outlet for the emerging, edgy Jazz stars of the future it was an obvious choice to make Jazz the focus of this new basement venue. Pop up events in the last few weeks have allowed the Blue Arrow team to test out the space and have been highly praised by the lucky few customers who have witnessed the birth of the exciting new venue.

The Blue Arrow founders elaborate on the core objectives of the new venue: “So much of the best music in the world has its roots in jazz and we hope to provide a fertile ground for those roots to grow and inspire the new generation, just like it did 100 years ago. THE BEATSTALKERS :: Official Book - Launch 12 April Book launch info @ www.beatstalkersbook.com
Scotland’s first-ever pop stars in the 1960's tell their story in official book, including their rise to fame, working with David Bowie, the Kinks and others, and how they managed to stay friends as the music industry tried to crush them Bassist Alan Mair (who went on to join The Only Ones) says: “It’s been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster ride and a lot of fun recalling those heady days back in the sixties, when we were in the Beatstalkers. It’s taken us all on quite a journey, and we hope it takes our fans on the same journey, because it was as much of a shared experience as a band and fans could have. “The one thing we always had was great belief in ourselves, which never waned. Along with a little bit of luck – every success needs a bit of luck – and, of course, some talent, we realised our dreams and became Scotland’s top band. “We hope our story inspires young bands out there today to believe in themselves, never lose focus on what they want to achieve, and eventually find success.”
The Beatstalkers will be published on 12 April in limited-edition hardback and standard paperback formats. A launch event will be held on 12 April 12 at The Clutha in Glasgow at 7.30pm, with band members in attendance and copies on sale.
Author Martin Kielty said: "The story of the Beatstalkers is one I’ve wanted to help tell for a long time. It’s the definitive rock’n’roll experience that every band who came after stream of groundbreaking musical moves, them lived through, whether they won or lost. scrapes with senior stardom including a stint of Even though so many years have passed, working with David Bowie as their songwriter, anyone who’s tried to make it through their and a legacy of unforgettable live shows. music will recognise some life-changing By the mid-1960s they’d become one of a moments they’ve dealt with themselves. That’s Barrowland Ballroom, played a six-week heroic. I’m proud that such an iconic story is residency in London’s legendary Marquee Club, finally recorded for posterity." The Beatstalkers launch takes place at the Clutha Bar, Glasgow on 12 April, with band members present. Martin Kielty is a Scottish rock journalist and author, with three books in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Permanent Collection. His titles include Apollo Memories, SAHB Story: The Tale of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Are Ye Dancin’? and Big Noise: The Sound of Scotland. He’s former manager of iconic Scottish artists The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and The Rezillos. He’s a regular contributor to the biggest rock magazines in the UK and to the leading rock websites in the US. The Beatstalkers is his 17th book.
The book's by band members David Lennox (vocals), Alan Mair (bass), Ronnie Smith (guitar), Eddie Campbell (keyboards) and Jeff Allen (drums) with award-nominated rock journalist, author and band manager Martin Kielty. The background :: Wind back to Friday, 11 June, 1965: Screaming teenagers swarmed onto the bandstand in George Square, Glasgow, today, and mobbed local beat group the Beatstalkers. Mounted police had to be called in as hundreds of screaming girls chased their idols into the City Chambers. The surging mass of fans forced their way past attendants, councillors and staff and began kissing and cuddling the group. A councillor later said: “I was shocked – it was hysteria. Something must be done about the Beatstalkers.” David Lennox, Alan Mair, Ronnie Smith, Eddie Campbell and Tudge Williamson – soon to be replaced by Jeff Allen – had already made a mark in their home city, and most of the towns of Scotland. They could even sell out ballrooms by sending cardboard cutouts instead of themselves. While England had Beatlemania, Beatstalkermania was bigger in Scotland. But they were nowhere near finished. Their dramatic story was to include more scenes of hysteria, a
released seven singles – including three tracks written by Bowie – and experienced the rock’n’roll lifestyle just as it was becoming a desired way of life..

The Beatstalkers’ story came to a crushing and sudden end in London just a few years after the dramatic events of the George Square Riot. By that time they’d blazed a trail that every single Scottish band has followed ever since. And most importantly, they retained their friendship through thick and thin, high and low – and to highlight their impact, they played a sold-out reunion show at the Barrowland Ballroom in 2005. As Eddie Tobin – manager of rival band The Bo-Weavles, and later Billy Connolly and the Glasgow Apollo venue – says: “They were the first, and they were the greatest.”

FATGOTH :: Farewell Shows - 4-28 April farewell gig details @ www.facebook.com/pg/fatgoth1/events
Fat Goth Announce Farewell Shows :: After eight years, four albums, and praise from the press, it is with a heavy heart that Fat Goth have announced they are calling it a day. The altrock trio have three shows planned in Glasgow, Edinburgh and their hometown Dundee, before officially calling it quits. Fat Goth's Fraser said: "Yes, regrettably it's true. Fat Goth's nemesis, the continent of Australia, has yet again claimed a member of our ranks for its own. This time it's our beloved time-keeping extraordinaire, Mark who will be
leaving Scotland behind for the land down under this coming spring. Those who are familiar with his drumming prowess will hopefully understand the gravity of his forthcoming departure and recognise the absurdity in Kevin and I entertaining the thought of replacing our dear and highly talented chum.
That said, we're immeasurably proud of everything our band has managed to achieve in the last 8 years and we would like to offer up our sincerest gratitude This means Fat Goth is now on borrowed time, and appreciation for but we've managed to book a few farewell shows EVERYONE who has at some of our favourite venues across Scotland supported us along and it would be truly excellent to see y'all for the way. PAUL ANDERSON
AULD NEW HEIDS
Land and Sea
The High Summit
AULD NEW HEIDS - Volume 1
After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.
Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).

This album embraces all that was great about the golden days of the scottish folk scene in the 1960s/70s. It is a catalogue of some of the best and most popular songs of the time written by folk legends such as Ewan MacColl, Alex Campbell, Hamish Henderson, Matt McGinn, Archie Fisher, Jim McLean and Mary Brookesbank. Also Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott have a song each on the album. A quartet of four of Scotland’s most experienced performers brings together the vocal talents of brothers IAN and FRASER BRUCE along with the exceptional musical skills of PETE CLARK on fiddle and GREGOR LOWREY on accordion. It has to be said that IAN BRUCE is pretty efficient on guitar, to complete the instrumental section. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com

Putting down a marker for all rock bands in 2017, Thula Borah have produced one of the best records you're likely to hear all year, creating a sound that defies any one genre; switching seamlessly from post-rock, posthardcore and dream-pop to grunge, indie-rock and emo. Indeed, Thula Borah have taken post-hardcore sensibilities and fuzzed out, meaty riffs and amalgamated them with catchy hooks that demand your attention.

The Seas Between Us
Skeletons
This Girl, This Woman
My new album The Seas Between Us is out now! It has twelve old Scots and Gaelic songs, many of which I’ve been singing since I was a little girl. It was recorded and produced by Matheu Watson, who also played several instruments (guitars, fiddle, mandolin, prepared instruments, synth, organs, etc.) and features Fraser Fifield (prepared whistle, lowland pipes, kaval), Jim Rattigan (French horn), Ben Cashell (cello) and Findlay Napier (voice). It was mixed by Leo Abrahams and mastered by Iain Hutchison.
This Girl, This Woman is the debut album by 57-yearHailing from The Shetland Islands, The Revellers are a old singer Jude Adams, who discovered her talent seven-piece juggernaut, that combine fiddle, mandolin following a life-changing M.E. diagnosis. The album, and tenor banjo with heavy metal, punk and alternative which Jude describes as soulful pop with a 60s twist, rock rhythm section. The end result is something which contains 10 tracks all written and sung by Jude, and has been nicknamed by onlookers as ‘Heavy Folk Music’ produced and arranged by musician Janette Mason. or ‘Viking Metal’. The band release their second album Jude comments: " I always loved to sing, and I always did, but behind closed doors. It was only when I got to this autumn – ‘Skeletons’ with Tim Matthew (Lau/ 50 that I summoned the courage to start singing in Mystery Juice) at the helm and cameo appearances public. And then two years later I was diagnosed with from some of Shetland’s finest musicians (including M.E. Guillotine
album cd / download Release Date: Out Now
Guillotine was launched on 10th oct at Summerhall with a massive 19piece line-up including string and brass sextets. This was the only way to do the album justice. Guillotine is the culmination of the band's 8 year weekly residency at Edinburgh's notorious Jazz Bar. This is definitely a huge step up in Mike Kearney's production and writing style. Enjoy! Atlas The Poets & The Beats album cd / download / stream Release Date: Out Now
The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Enjoy the beats…” Listen/Watch: https://soundcloud.com www.youtube.com Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com www.paularmour.co.uk https://twitter.com/paul497191 www.facebook.com/paul.armour.31

Stories Untold
Crossing Borders
To Be Free
Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.
‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.
To Be Free is an interim project - in between albums number one and two - for Glasgow's Martha L. Healy. Including two originals and two of Martha's favourite country classics, the EP was recorded with her band over a snowy weekend in Glasgow in January 2016.
