After success with their musical hero King Creosote, The Big Project announces a forthcoming performance with award winning singer/songwriter Karine Polwart! Edinburgh : 24 March : www.thebigproject.org.uk Comments from the choir on their experience with King Creosote included: “King Creosote is a great songwriter! He was awesome”, “he was amazing - fun to work with” and “really, really cool - dramatic.” The forthcoming gig with Karine Polwart is part of a two year singing project at The BIG Project, Broomhouse, funded by Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative, which will feature four inspirational Scottish artists performing alongside, and with, The BIG Project Youth Choir. In the past few years, the members of The BIG Project Youth Choir have had their performance of ‘O Flower Of Scotland’ beamed globally during the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, and performed alongside Emeli Sande as part of Edinburgh’s Olympic Torch Relay celebrations.

On 3 February, The BIG Project embarked on their first “BIG Heroes” concert, with Mercury nominee King Creosote (a.k.a. Kenny Anderson) as the first of The BIG Project’s musical heroes to perform in Broomhouse with their youth choir - in the school gym hall! The gig was a great experience for performers and audience alike, with a packed hall, a great atmosphere and two positive reviews in The Scotsman and Is This Music?, describing the choir’s performance as “an adventurous setlist tackled with no lack of enthusiasm” and “an impressive debut for these potential stars of tomorrow”.

Project Manager, Sascha Macleod explained: “The BIG Project Youth Choir has been incredibly lucky to travel and work with inspirational musicians, and this project lets us share that excitement with all of the children and young people who access our services - which include weekly youth clubs, a youth theatre, holiday programmes and residential experiences. We can also provide their families and the Broomhouse community with an amazing experience of high quality live music.” Full Time Youth Worker Lissa McIntyre, who conducts the choir, commented: “We’re very much looking forward to welcoming Karine Polwart as our second musical hero - she’s worked with us in several music projects and the concert will give the choir members and their families an opportunity to hear more of her inspirational songwriting.” Leonie Bell, Director of Arts & Engagement at Creative Scotland, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the children and young people of Broomhouse to see and perform in front of friends and family alongside one of Scotland’s musical stars. Every year the YMI supports over 350 projects across Scotland, bringing high quality music making opportunities into communities. Taking part in creative activities can make a real difference to the lives of young people by allowing them to shine and express themselves.”

Scottish bands to play New York

LAU : www.lau-music.co.uk continued from page 1

Formed in 2010, The LaFontaines music is described as a fusion of guitar, hip hop and pop, a union which has seen the Motherwell born 5-piece referred to as "The best live band in Scotland" - Sunday Mail. The band competed for the once in a lifetime opportunity to play in New York City when they performed live as part of Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland and Creative Scotland's Big Apple Award. The live final took place in Glasgow's G2 venue in December 2013 where the band went head to head with some of Scotland's most promising emerging music talents, and were judged by a panel of industry stalwarts. Kerr Okan, The LaFontaines vocalist said: "If you had told me even a year ago that we would be chosen as the top act to represent the country, as part of the Nordoff-Robbins Scotland Big Apple Award, I would have asked you very politely to stop pulling my leg! We couldn’t be more excited about taking Fontmania to the Big Apple, and to do it during Scotland Week makes it all the more special. We will truly represent Scotland and show it off on the best possible stage.” Caroline Parkinson, Director of Creative Development at Creative Scotland, said: "The Big Apple Award presents an exciting opportunity for The LaFontaines to perform in New York. Showcasing during Scotland Week will provide opportunities for the band to make new connections and build their international fan base." LAU: Also on the bill for the Caledonian Collective are award winning Scottish folk band Lau, who started 2014 with a sold out performance at Glasgow's Celtic Connections receiving yet more five star reviews including The Guardian who wrote "Lau are the UK's best live band". Their most recent album "Race The Loser" received rave reviews with accolades including five stars from the Guardian who listed the album in their Best Albums of the Year Poll. The band were also shortlisted for the Scottish Album of the Year in 2013 (SAY Awards) and have performed on TV show Later…With Jools Holland. Touted as modern folk music’s most innovative band, Lau's performances are thrilling and demonstrate the sheer brilliance of the 3-pieces talent and free-thinking vision; something which was recognised by BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, with whom the band have won the award for Best Group 4 years running. The band continue to develop their sound and explore new directions, releasing a remix EP which features reinterpretations and re-works of the bands work by internationally respected artists including Matthew Herbert, Frightened Rabbit's Gordon Skene and Sei A. Donald MacLeod, Chairman of Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland charity and owner of promoters CPL Entertainment Ltd (and renowned live music venues The Cathouse & The Garage) commented: "The wealth of musical talent coming out of Scotland is phenomenal, everyone at Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland and CPL are thrilled that The LaFontaines and Lau will be representing the charity and Scotland in New York. It's a fantastic opportunity for the bands to promote themselves, and a fantastic opportunity for us as a charity to play our part in promoting Scotland internationally as a hub of creative talent." Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland helps improve the lives of children and adults isolated by disability, trauma or illness. The charity requires £500,000 each year to operate and their aim is to Make Music, Change Lives. The unique qualities of music as therapy can enhance communication, support change and enable people to live more resourcefully and creatively. Pachamama Productions present GRIT: The Martyn Bennett Story Buy your tickets now @ http://www.tramway.org/events/Pages/Grit-The-Martyn-Bennett-Story.aspx

#GRITthemartynbennettstory

Tickets are now on sale for awardwinning actor and theatre director Cora Bissett’s latest production, based on the life and music of one of Scotland's most innovative and influential musicians Martyn Bennett.

possibilities.” Cora’s work spans an extremely diverse range of theatre styles: from classical, physical, devised and experimental and creating her own devised shows; to working collaboratively with choreographers, aerial artists, live improvising singers and musicians. The new production follows the critically acclaimed Glasgow Girls which has had successful runs in Glasgow, London, Paris, Chicago and New York and last week won the Best New Musical Award at the Off West End Theatre Awards.

Tickets for the Glasgow shows are available through the Tramway website: www.tramway.org/events/Pages/Grit-The-Martyn-Bennett-Story. Written by Kieran Hurley and directed by Cora, GRIT: The Martyn Bennett aspx Story forms part of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme and will showcase at two locations later this year – Glasgow’s For the Mull events contact the Mull Theatre Box office: 01688 302828 / Tramway from 3-7 June (with previews on 30/31 May) and Mull Theatre 01688 302211 / bookings@comar.co.uk from 20-22 June. Martyn stormed the underground music scene in the 90s with his unique blend of high energy dance beats and Gaelic influences. The production tells the story of his phenomenal musical imagination, passion, fierce love of life, music, the country and people who inspired his ground-breaking creations, and his fight against the cancer which ultimately robbed him of his short life at 33.

The cross-form piece reflects Martyn's own Scots-Canadian heritage and is an exciting international collaboration with Montreal's renowned choreographer Dana Gingras, whose work explores the fragility and endurance of human nature with choreography that is physically punishing, but machine-like in precision. The show features world-class acrobatic artists from Cirque Du Soleil alongside an ensemble of Scotland's dance and aerial artists and actors, set against the backdrop of Martyn's legendary dance music in its original form. Fans of Martyn are also in for another treat with a mini music festival of artists inspired by his work at An Tobar from 19-22 June, featuring amongst others, brilliant folk visionaries LAU. Commenting on GRIT: The Martyn Bennett Story, Cora said: “Martyn was a phenomenal creative force, making music which was way ahead of its time and I am really excited to present his story to a whole new generation who may not be aware of the amazing work he produced in the short life he had. “Both in the context of the Commonwealth Games and our referendum year, I feel Martyn is also a potent icon of a Scot who had the deepest respect and love for his heritage and was passionate about finding ways in which his culture could meet, and connect with others.

New EU law for digital music hits the right note Music lovers across Europe have received a welcome boost thanks to new legislation that will make it easier for online music providers to offer their services across the whole EU, rather than in just one or a few countries. Currently, digital music services must comply with individual rules for licences, rights and royalties, meaning that only one digital music service is currently available EU-wide. However, following a vote in the European Parliament in Strasbourg today, online music providers will be able to purchase licences that apply right across the EU, meaning that music lovers with have access to far more services and fewer licencing costs to music providers should mean lower prices for consumers. European Conservatives and Reformists Group Legal Affairs spokesman Sajjad Karim MEP has argued that the measures are essential to help complete the EU's single market in digital services. He said: "New digital music services such as Deezer and Spotify are coming online and challenging established tech giants in many EU countries, but they are currently hampered by outdated licencing laws. These rules will make it easier for companies to offer musical services right across the EU, with access to over 500 million consumers. "For music lovers, these reforms will mean a greater choice of services and eventually cheaper music. This directive will help those new start-up companies that are already revolutionising how we receive our music online. "The digital music revolution will no longer be hampered by outdated EU law. There are already some great online music services in different EU countries and soon they can be made available right across the continent."

NordEste /NorthEast Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now

A Brazilian percussionist, Allysson Velez travels to Huntly, Scotland. There he is touched by the very first contact with the Scottish Ceilidh and impressed by the common musical language of the north east of Scotland and the north east of Brazil. Here he worked with a special selection of local Scottish musicians and a musician from West Africa, who has settled in the area, to transform an encounter into a musical flow of exchanging gifts and virtues. This album, NordEste/ NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre found in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil), from which the musicians have taken their name. STEPHEN LEE 4 Orchestral Pieces Album : cd Release Date: Out Now

4 Orchestral Pieces is a body of work composed by Stephen Lee. Influences reflected in it include the rich, dark imagery of the art of Douglas Gordon and of Caravaggio, the melancholic vision and 'eternal solitude' of the poetry of James Thomson/Charles Baudelaire and the range and poignancy of the musicianship of Billy MacKenzie. Of the tracks, Before the Autumn Came (2 movements) was directly inspired by a Billy MacKenzie vocal melody.
