Jamie Sutherland of Edinburgh band Broken Records, who are headlined this week, has been working alongside the multi arts venue to put together a great line up of acts over the next few months. The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra Presents 'Kurt Elling Swings Sinatra' The spring of 2015 is set to burst into life as the Scottish National Jazz GIGnotes ..... Sinatra at the Sands was the extraordinary live album that Sinatra made with the Count Basie Orchestra led by Quincy Jones, and it stands today as a high point in the singer’s amazing career. Nevertheless, Sinatra always strived for more, and it’s in that spirit we say, “the best is yet to come”.

Sinatra has been called many things, from “The Voice of the Century” to “An Act You Can’t Follow”. It takes a great voice to sing remotely like Sinatra, but it takes a great jazz voice to know Sinatra. Kurt Elling, perhaps the foremost jazz vocalist of his generation, is a warm communicator who uses his four-octave skills to ensure that a lyric is more than a mere companion to melody. In his care, words are expressed as notes, and notes are expressed as words. And every word counts. Sinatra once explained, “I take a sheet with just the lyrics. No music. At that point I’m looking at a poem. I’m trying to understand the point of view of the person behind the words. I want to understand that person’s emotions”. Kurt Elling shares this sentiment and this is how and why he really knows Sinatra. This potent combination of strong intellect married to powerhouse, big band jazz makes for a heady mix. Frank Sinatra and dynamic, sophisticated jazz served each other well in the course of his long, eradefining career. Together they provided the soundtrack for a century; a complete musical experience that remains as passionate, seductive and persuasive as it did when “The Voice” was at the peak of his powers. Sinatra’s songbook is full of the most striking musical imagery ever created by revered arrangers like Quincy Jones, Billy May, Neil Hefti and Nelson Riddle. Moreover, titles like Come Fly With Me, I've Got You Under My Skin, My Kind Of Town, You Make Me Feel So Young and The Lady Is A Tramp literally bookmarked life events for a generation. Kurt Elling and the SNJO add to its pages with flair, bravura and invention, but they’ve also been inspired by a

EIFF & RSNO present 30th anniversary screening of ‘Back to the Future’ with live orchestral score Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) are celebrating the 30th anniversary of EIFF’s UK Premiere of Robert Zemeckis’ legendary BACK TO THE FUTURE in 1985, accompanied by Alan Silvestri’s dazzling score performed live by the RSNO, on Saturday 27 June at the Festival Theatre Edinburgh.

from the Festival Theatre Box Office on 0131 529 6000 or visit www.edtheatres.com. This special screening will mark the start of a programme to celebrate EIFF’s heritage and legacy over the past 70 years, and has been made possible through the kind support of Sir Ewan and Lady Brown. Mark Adams, Artistic Director of the EIFF commented: “This live event will delight and enthral in equal measure. As well as being a major event in its own right, this also marks the beginning of a new set of relationships with Scotland’s National Performing Companies, where we are placing film within the context of other artforms.” RSNO Acting Chief Executive Kenneth Osborne commented: “To be involved in the 30th anniversary celebrations of this iconic film is quite an honour. BACK TO THE FUTURE is a modern classic, and Alan Silvestri’s dramatic score will be a joy for our orchestra to play. There’s a delightful symmetry to the event also, as we and the audience, in 2015, enjoy a movie about a young man in 1985 travelling back in time to 1955. It promises to be a very special night.”

Fans old and new will experience the thrill of BACK TO THE FUTURE like never before – on the big screen with a full symphony www.rsno.org.uk orchestra. This presentation will include a newly expanded score by Alan Silvestri with www.edfilmfest.org.uk approximately 15 minutes of additional music https://twitter.com/RSNO being prepared by the composer. www.facebook.com/ royalscottishnationalorchestra

Opera world premiere for 3-4 year olds! "You can’t help but smile when you see a room full of toddlers enthralled by wonderful operatic voices"

Scottish Opera is proving yet again that you are never too young to enjoy music with its exciting new interactive show KidO.

Building on the phenomenal success of BabyO and SensoryO, the much loved, sell-out productions for babies and toddlers, Scottish Opera brings KidO to another young audience of 3-4 year olds and their carers. This enchanting musical adventure provides a lively and welcoming introduction to live performance and opera and allows children to get close to and get involved in the creative activity. Encouraging play and make believe, the show features a mix of live singing, opera and

specially written music, using vocal and body percussion to create exciting rhythms and build up words. Utilising everyday objects such as kettles and teacups as instruments, it seeks to make the ordinary extraordinary. Directed by acclaimed children’s theatre director Lu Kemp, with music by Katy Lavinia Cooper, KidO tells the story of two very different characters who find it difficult to share a space. The performers Frances Morrison-Allen, Stuart Semple and Andrew McTaggart bring the 45 minute show to life. Jane Davidson, Director of Education and Outreach at Scottish Opera said: “‘I’ve always believed that you’re never too young to enjoy live music and the reaction from the young audiences at BabyO has proved that time and time again. You can’t help but smile when you see a room full of babies and toddlers enthralled by the wonderful operatic voices, bright tactile sets and props, and sweet storytelling at the heart of these shows. We are very excited to build on this interest as we bring KidO to a slightly older age-group of 3-4 year olds. Of course we hope the production is enjoyable, but there’s also evidence that music can help children with their cognitive development, so for example, through repetition and recognition of the sounds and actions that motivate the characters in the story, we’re helping build language skills.”

Having already been to Peebles, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Greenock the April dates for KidO are ..... Eden Court, Inverness Wednesday 1 April, 11am & 2pm Thursday 2 April, 11am& 2pm Birnam Arts, Dunkeld Friday 3 April, 11am&1pm Lochgelly Centre, Lochgelly Saturday 4 April, 12.30pm&3.30pm Sunday 5 April, 11am&2pm

The EP consists of four tracks, all recorded at Watercolour Studios with the exception of 'February Has A Smoking Problem' which was recorded at Chem19 Studios: Kieran Hurley described Josephine's music this way: “Josephine Sillars is a genuine breath of fresh air. Apparently completely unconcerned with conforming to any hollow and short-lived musical trends, she instead just gets on with the business of crafting really excellent pop songs. Her accidental trademark of performing with her piano propped up on an ironing board tells us a lot about Josephine as an artist. Far from being some kind of gimmicky-hipster-affectation, for Josephine this is simply a practical response to a real need to have her songs heard as widely as possible. With a song-writing maturity that belies her age, she covers anything from relationships and break-ups to political revolution with a genuine lyrical wit, all underpinned with sophisticated yet un-showy piano arrangements. Good-humoured and self-aware, she endears audiences instantly with the honesty of her performances, and her almost unexpectedly powerful voice. If Ben Folds were a 19 year-old girl from Inverness, he’d probably sound something like this”. You can hear and grab a free download of 'February Has A Smoking Problem' from Soundcloud at this link https://soundcloud.com/josephine-sillars/february-has-a-smokingproblem Tour info: Thursday 26 March – Café Drummonds, Aberdeen // Friday 27 March – Mad Hatters, Inverness // Sunday 29 March – Stereo, Glasgow (3 pm) // Sunday 29 March – Electric Circus, Edinburgh (7 pm)

David Knowles is a distinctive vocalist and songwriter based in Edinburgh, with a growing international social media following. Lyrically, David draws inspiration from classic writers including William Blake, Oscar Wilde, Jack Kerouac and Hunter Thompson. Years spent travelling the world (including Latin America, Asia and Europe) have provided a rich vein of inspiration for his songwriting and familiarity with a range of exotic instruments including the Didjeridoo, African Djembe drum and far eastern Dulcimer. With a depth and range that bely his relatively tender years, David’s voice has drawn favourable comparisons to such iconic performers as Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Grammy award-winning country singer Ray Lamontagne. With a busy schedule of live performances already planned, 2015 promises to be a big year for David Knowles including the launch of debut album “Footsteps” on 9 March. The Jelly Man's Daughter A Thing Brand New

Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

From social commentary to stories of a more personal nature, ‘A Thing Brand New’ is a collection of songs – the music reflecting the words and words set to the music. This album is Stanley Odd at their most organic, evolved and comfortable in the awkwardness of their own skins.

The debut album from The Jellyman's Daughter - the sweet vocal harmonies and unique cello/guitar playing of the Edinburgh duo are joined by double bass, banjo, fiddle and mandolin on certain songs, bringing a fresh and innovative sound. In Americana UK's words... "Emily and Graham combine exquisite vocal harmonies and instrumental virtuosity, with Graham's rhythmic, percussive and improvisational cello playing giving their music a unique appeal"

LITTLE KINGDOM

Gràs (Grace)

Wasting Time

Yesteryear

Famed Gaelic songstress Mairi MacInnes presents Gràs (Grace), her first new album in 13 years! Some of the songs have been written by Mairi; others have been adapted from ancient Gaelic songs and prayers. Some take the form of mouth music, waulking and clapping songs, and hymns. Mairi’s fans have been patiently waiting for Gràs for over ten years, but it will be worth the wait.

Based in West Lothian, Scotland, The Phantoms formed in May 2012, quickly winning an army of fans with their huge sound and infectious on-stage energy. Influenced by Kasabian, Royal Blood, Catfish and the Bottlemen and Arctic Monkeys, their new single 'Wasting Time' is a perfect example of the sound that has earned The Phantoms the reputation as one of Scotland's most exciting prospects.

Uplifting vocals, intricate guitars, weaving violin melodies, solid bass lines and foot-stomping drum beats to form a unique take on Scottish folk music. "Yesteryear" combines Little Kingdom's cheerful folk with darker, alternative roots, giving a small taste of the band's vast palette of sounds.
