16 of Scotland’s freshest acts announced to play legendary T Break Stage @ T in the Park Tennent’s Lager put out their annual call in March for Scotland’s unsigned acts to submit their demos to T Break in the hope of landing one of 16 highly coveted slots on the T Break Stage at T in the Park, and they have now announced who will be taking to the legendary stage this summer. T Break’s judging panel is made up of 14 of Scotland’s most respected and influential music industry experts who listen to each and every track submitted before coming together to deliberate their shortlists. The judges then decide on the final 16 acts - who will potentially follow in the footsteps of this year’s T in the Park headliner and former T Break band Biffy Clyro - to make up the T Break 2014 line-up. Simon Neil, Biffy Clyro front man said of their T Break performance in 1999, “It was probably one of the biggest moments of our lives, even now looking back, that first time you feel like a real band is phenomenal… that was literally the break, T gave us the break” Dave McGeachan, Senior Promoter from T Break partners DF Concerts sits on the judging panel. He said: “This is an incredibly strong year for Scottish music and the talent coming out of Scotland’s grassroots music scene in particular is of a very high standard. I feel we’ve managed to get a really great representation across many different genres with this year’s selection and I look forward to seeing some excellent live performances over the weekend." T Break was launched by Tennent’s in 1996 and has been uncovering Scotland’s freshest unsigned talent and giving them a platform to showcase their music on the T Break Stage at T in the Park ever since. Each year, 16 bands are handpicked from almost a thousand entries by a panel of Scotland’s industry experts and given the chance to play the T Break Stage To find out more about the acts on the T Break 2014 line-up, check out www.facebook.com/TennentsTBreak and www.tennents.com/tbreak

Our Big Gig announced in Scotland as part of Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme £500 grants for community music event - apply now @ www.superact.org.uk/ourbiggig/apply-now

Our Big Gig, the UK’s largest community music festival is spreading to Scotland for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games culture programme. Funded by Creative Scotland as part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme, Our Big Gig will see Scotland unite to celebrate local music at community events from 11-13 July. The gigs aim to showcase new and existing talent and give people the opportunity to have a go at making music. Last summer, over 200,000 people attended 326 Our Big Gig events across England, which saw a wide variety of musical activities take place in a range of unusual spaces. From schools to skate parks, beaches to boats, some 14,600 people performed across the length and breadth of the country.

For 2014, all types of community organisations are being urged to apply to put on an event in their local area and bring together diverse groups of people through music. Be it a sports club, faith group or another, all successful applicants receive grant funding of £500 and event management training is provided. Organised by music and arts organisation Superact, Our Big Gig grew from the Bandstand Marathon; an iconic London 2012 festival event that helped close the London Games with 9000 people across Britain simultaneously performing Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’. Katharine Lane, Director at Superact added: “Our Big Gig is a fantastic opportunity for organisations to put on a musical event in their community and reach out to people that they may not yet know. “While Superact has been running community music events across the UK for years, we never cease to be amazed at the unifying power of music. “We’re looking forward to receiving event applications from across Scotland and would encourage as many people as possible to apply

Inverness : 3 June : www.gonorthfestival.co.uk

Inverness Gigs are proud to present goNORTH Fringe at The Eagle Bar in Inverness on the 3 June. The event will bring together three Inverness favourites whilst adding a European twist! Ashley and The Cosmonauts are well know on the Inverness scene, both as a band and their individual ventures. Ashley Mackay and her Cosmonauts (aka Ben Hesling, Robin Abbot, Dickie Bills and Derek Urqhuart) have played the likes of Belladrum, including a memorable main stage opening slot in 2013 and recently supported Grousebeater Sound System at King Tuts in April. The band have a strong Fleetwood Mac sound evidenced perfectly in tunes such as “Behind These Eyes”, “Clouds” and "Castles". www.facebook.com/ashleyandthecosmonauts

Sara Bills and The Has-Beens also quite happily share local favourite tags with Ashley and Co. The band’s sound is described as “alternative folk punk”. The four piece enter their fifth year in October, but it was way back in 2011 when their last recording “Spill the Beans” was released. The tracks have lost none of their poignancy over the time, with one reviewer noting “"In a sea of generic indie pop, this band retreat from lazy comparisons to Belle and Sebastian and the like, with their true creativity and local charm." www.facebook.com/sarabillsthehasbeens www.williecampbell.co.uk

Willie Campbell is regarded by a broad range of respected voices as amongst the finest songwriters in the country. He has now worked with veteran Gaelic folk rock musician Calum Martin to produced his own superb Gaelic album

Devil's Queen will certainly bring a change of pace, and volume, to finish off the event. The band have recently been reinvigorated by a change of personnel but have lost none of their ability to rock with the finest. The Inverness based 4-piece create a slightly contemporary twist on Rock and are fresh off a mainstage appearance at the Ironworks. www.facebook.com/DevilsQueen

DROPKICK

Giving a European twist to proceedings are Gothenburg based two (or three) piece Pale Honey. Describing themselves as minimalistic rock they explain on their website “Simply put, we love what we're doing and think that the sound (with it's easy, minimal sound) is nonchalant and sincere at the same time.” They have just recently released debut EP “Fiction” with an album planned for the late part of 2014. www.facebook.com/palehoney Chris Lemon founder of Inverness Gigs said: “We are really pleased to play a role in goNORTH 2014 and the line-up compliments the many fine acts to play at the Showcase this year. Get the party started at the Eagle on the 3 June.”

Scotland's 'Wide Days' Beats International Competition For 2014 Music Business Award Scotland’s music convention, Wide Days, has bean voted Best Networking Event or Service at Britain’s largest music industry gathering 'The Great Escape'. The honour was announced at a ceremony in Brighton, which was attended by key figures from the international music business world.

“I have attended hundreds of music business conferences, but Wide Days is the first where the organiser has given a particularly wellinformed guided tour of his city,” he says. “It helped create a connection with Edinburgh and was a fantastic opportunity to meet other delegates.”

Wide Days, which took place in Edinburgh on 910 April, was the only UK nomination in its category at the Yearly Music Conference Award [YMCA]. It was nominated alongside much larger international events Breakout West [Canada], Tallin Music Week [Estonia], Waves [Austria] and Music Expo [US].

Wide Days 2014 saw a considerable rise in the number of international speakers and included a focus on the German music market. This tie-in was marked with the announcement of a generation of industry players to exchange partnership with Hamburg's Reeperbahn knowledge and ideas. Festival, one of Europe’s largest showcase and music industry gatherings. Leading trade publication, Record Of The Day, has described Wide Days as “An unmissable Wide Days is Scotland’s only convention fixture in our calendar.” dedicated exclusively to music business seminars, presentations and showcases. Wide Days was proposed for the award by industry veteran, Allan McGowan, who was moved to put it forward after being impressed by the convention’s organiser Olaf Furniss, conducting a bus tour of Edinburgh for speakers and delegates.

Olaf Furniss, who organises Wide Days with music manager Michael Lambert, adds: “As well as running events, I am also member of the Scottish Tourist Guides Association, so when we invite people to speak at Wide Days I believe they should be introduced to our city, as well as Scottish talent. Music and tourism go hand in hand.”

Top Canadian Band Heading for Scotland in early June Brookfield/Dunfermline/Peebles : 1-4 June : www.brookfield-knights.com

Once hailed as “the best ‘live’ act I have ever seen” in a Maverick magazine review, Canadian roots music sensations, The Bills have blown away concert-goers and festival crowds around the globe. Last time they were in the UK, The Herald praised them as “the biggest blast of fresh air to come out of Canada since The Band.” Known the world over for their exquisite songcraft, superb arrangements and dynamic live performances, The Bills feature an all-star line-up of talent from Canada's west coast, including Chris Frye (guitar/lead vocals), Marc Atkinson (mandolin/guitar/vocals), Adrian Dolan (fiddle/accordion/ piano/vocals), Richard Moody (violin/viola/vocals) and Scott White (upright bass). Influenced in equal parts by Django Reinhardt, Sam Bush, Stan Rogers and Chopin, and renowned for their instrumental virtuosity, tight vocal arrangements, exuberant live shows, evocative song-writing and innovative interpretations of trad tunes, they have racked up a string of Canadian music awards and built a devoted fan following that extends across North America and Europe.

The Bills : www.facebook.com/thebillsmusic

following the release of their new album, Yes Please, the long-awaited follow-up to their Juno Award-nominated release Let Em Run (2005). Since forming in 1996, the band has thrilled audiences at many major festivals, gifted multi-instrumentalists who are masters at bridging the gulf between stage and audience.

Drawing musical inspiration from a broad range of traditions, a melange of European influences, rhythms of Latin America, and melodies of the wandering Romany peoples, the band has forged a style all their own that transcends musical boundaries and defies simple categorisation. With three main writers in residence they have developed an outstanding repertoire of songs that speak of their own part of the world.

Currently in the UK for several summer festival appearances and a string of other dates, they pay a whistle-stop visit to Scotland for shows and Brookfield Hall in Renfrewshire on June 1, Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline, on June 3 and Peebles’ Eastgate Theatre on June 4, before heading for shows at The Sage in Gateshead, and The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal, then rounding off this latest visit as the headline act at the big Gate to Southwell festival in Nottinghamshire.

Copper Dogs album recorded in whisky distillery The ruins of 13th century Balvenie Castle in Dufftown, Speyside was the stunning setting for an album launch gig by Copper Dogs, the band of selfconfessed whisky fanatics who recorded their debut album on the traditional floor maltings of nearby The Balvenie Distillery.

Spencer on lead vocals, Rob Allanson on bass and Simon Roser on drums. Sam, Cat, Rob and Simon all work in the whisky industry. The album also features guest appearances from various other leading whisky industry figures including Dave Broom (vocals), Brian Kinsman

(bagpipes), Neil Ridley (organ) and Dr Nicholas Morgan (guitar). Their songs are crafted with a very particular Copper Dogs twist.

www.thebalvenie.com/copperdogs

The low-ceilinged, cavernous space of the maltings building at the distillery - normally used for germinating barley to make single malt Scotch whisky - provided unique acoustics for the recording, The Balvenie Maltings Sessions, which was completed over a three-day period in June last year. The quartet likened it to having a fifth member of the band with certain sounds and frequencies bouncing off the walls and coming back in unpredictable and exciting ways. Songs were transposed into certain keys that were better suited to the stone environment. Many of the stones that built the maltings originally came from Balvenie Castle and workers claim a very old ghost came with them and haunts the site! Copper Dogs, named after the copper tubes known as ‘dipping dogs’ that distillery workers used to store down their trouser legs and dip into casks to ‘liberate’ some whisky, comprises of Sam Simmons on guitar and vocals, Cat

The Last Battle :

album : 'Lay Your Burden Down'

release date - out now : buy @ http://thelastbattlemusic.bandcamp.com/

The Last Battle are an Edinburgh based Indie Folk Rock band that, since forming in 2009, have released two albums - 2010’s ‘Heart Of The Land, Soul Of The Sea’ and their just released latest ‘Lay Your Burden Down’, as well as handful of singles and E.P’s. New album ‘Lay Your Burden Down’ was written and recorded on the outskirts of Edinburgh, with the death of a close friend during the sessions having a big influence over the new material and shaping the album as a whole. After the completion of the record, and following the dissolution of the label 17 Seconds Records who released their debut, the band took to the crowd funding website Indiegogo, to raise funds to release it themselves. The campaign was a runaway success and has allowed the band to finance everything from the artwork, mastering, photography and pressing of ‘Lay Your Burden Down’. The band launched the album with two shows, one at The Roxy 171 in Glasgow on 1 May supported by Neil Pennycook of Meursault and Randolph’s Leap leader Adam Ross, and the second at The Liquid Room in Edinburgh with a Fife-centric line up that included Lidh and James Yorkston. The nights were a resounding success.

"'Lay Your Burden Down' mixes all of the best bits of their folk laden debut with a new found indie rock energy"

‘Lay Your Burden Down’ was released on 5 May on CD through their own label Beard of Truth, and is available on bandcamp (see link above) and in various record stores including Picadilly Records in Manchester, Action Records in Preston, Love Music Glasgow, and both Voxbox and Elvis Shakespeare in Edinburgh. It’s also available digitally through iTunes, Emusic and other various digital platforms. The album has received some great press so far from the likes of The Sunday Herald, The List, The Scotland On Sunday and The Skinny. The group comprises of Scott Longmuir (Vocals & Guitar), Caroline Overy (Vocals & Guitar), Jon Bews (Violin), Liam O’Hare (Drums) and Craig Kenny (Bass). www.lastbattle.co.uk https://twitter.com/thelastbattle www.facebook.com/thelastbattleuk

Frantic Chant :

album : 'Ride It Like A Shark'

release date - 13 June : buy @ http://dgab.bandcamp.com Album launch party at The Citrus Club in Edinburgh on 13 June with special guests The Valkarys and Mechanical Arms.

Launch party tickets can be purchased @ www.wegottickets.com/event/272035

“Ride It like a Shark”, the new album by Frantic Chant, will be released on Dogs Got a Bone Records on Friday 13 June. The album will be available as a download from all the major retailers and as a limited edition CD from http://dgab.bandcamp.com Each CD will have a unique hand drawn cover by, Frantic Chant guitarist, Nick Paul. Releasing an album on Friday the 13th may seem a little strange to those of you who are superstitious, but the band felt that after all the mishaps involved in this release, there is surely nothing else that can go wrong. The problems began on the first day of recording. With O’Hara, Nick and Producer John settled into The Cottage Studio on the banks of Loch Fyne, Stazy and Col set off from Edinburgh for what should have been a routine journey. Only half an hour into the trip, Col pulled over to allow three police cars, with flashing blue lights, past. Only they didn’t pass and the next thing the boys knew they were face to face with an armed response unit screaming at them to get out of the car. They were then locked in police cells for six hours before being released. While grabbing supplies for the journey, the shop next door was being robbed by two men armed with swords and Col’s car was identified by witnesses as leaving the scene at the time. It was midnight before they eventually arrived at the studio but, being the troopers they are, they decided to get to work and laid down the basic tracks for more than half the album. Mixing the album has been plagued by the ill health of a vital cog in the Frantic Chant machine. Without going in to detail, the completion of the album had been in jeopardy for months. Thankfully, everything has fallen into place on that front, but there were some very dark days indeed.

The initial plan to hold a two day launch party as part of Leith Festival at Cruz had to be scrapped as the venue has gone out of business. With the festival going on, it was impossible to find an alternative venue in Leith. The band was bitterly disappointed they couldn’t hold the launch in the old port, a place they all call home. After having to ride those problems like a shark, it had to be Friday the 13th. What else could possibly go wrong? https://www.facebook.com/franticchant https://twitter.com/FRANTICCHANTER

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download HOW TO SWIM

JAMES GILLESPIE

UNKLE BOB

Niagarama

Before I Die

It's Not Enough

How to Swim is the brainchild of Scottish BAFTAwinning writer and composer Gregor Barclay. Although known for their expansively orchestrated recorded work and a similarly maximalist approach to the idea of band size, the group is currently operating as a lean sixpiece, comprising members of The Second Hand Marching Band, The Martial Arts and the now-defunct Mother and The Addicts. Their forthcoming sophomore full-length, Niagarama, is a concept album of sorts, exploring the loss of youth and how we process it.

James is an acoustic singer/ songwriter based in London. James brings a lot to his music - honest story telling from Folk, Pain and Passion from Blues, hooks from pop and all with an indie edge. James' live performance is engaging, honest and mesmerising. His personality is charismatic and contagious.

'It’s Not Enough' conjures up the atmosphere of a sundrenched road-trip on America’s Pacific Coast Highway, with its slight air of melancholy, and gentle dappled sunlight that’s all the more precious because it feels so transitory.

Poor Things

Homeward

Based on the true story of our bassist Mike Edie's own grandfather, Sixteen Days tells the staggering tale of how a young man, Stewart Ross MBE, saved his crew mates after their ship, The Inversuir, was torpedoed, and then kept them alive for 16 days in a lifeboat before being rescued. This is one story we would like you to remember.

Saraseto Records are proud to announce the release of Poor Things, self-titled, debut album. Recorded by Matt Scott (PAWS) and mastered by Mercury music nominated producer Dave Paterson. Poor Things is the debut album from the Glasgow based three-piece. In June 2013 Poor Things released ‘Hurricane Poor Things’ EP, receiving several positive reviews from BBC Radio 1, Artrocker and Podcart. Festival appearances soon followed including T in the Park, Brew at the Bog, and goNorth.

The tracks were written at various points in his life. His songs show a great deal of clarity and depth. Rowan is joined by a host of musicians on this album, including Alyn Cosker, Angus Lyon, Gillian Fleetwood, Konrad Wiszniewski, Louis Abbot, Maeve MacKinnon, Rick Standley, Rosie Townhill and Sam West. "The Voice" Season 3 runner-up Terry McDermott and his band the Bonfires have returned with another stunning, sweeping Britrock ballad, co-written with Todd Burman of Australia's Juke Kartel.
