The Story of Sandy Bells Edinburgh’s World Famous Folk Bar www.sandybellsedinburgh.co.uk Buy a copy in Sandy Bells or online @ www.amazon.co.uk/Story-Sandy-Bells-Gillian-Ferguson/dp/1784621005 music in our capital city.

We brought news of the launch of this fantastic book to you back in September, but with Edinburgh bulging at the seams for TradFest this week we reckoned it was time to highlight it again! Expertly researched and written by Gillian Ferguson 'The Story of Sandy Bells' brings to your favourite chair the atmosphere, sounds and smells of this incredible little bar - a bar that's punched well above its physical size for the last 75 years in the history and development of folk

The bar's gradual development into a musical haven really began during the 1940's when Oddfellows Hall across the road ran folk performances from the Edinburgh's Peoples' Festival. In need of sustenance performers crowded into Sandy Bells bringing with them their songs and music, with impromptu sessions before and after their festival slots. This diverse range of drinkers were added to by students from the nearby Medical School turning the pub into a melting pot of academics, writers, poets, artists, intellectuals, gaelic speakers, story tellers, singers and musicians. In 2005 Sandy Bells beat 100 other bars in Scotland to receive the McEwans' Sessions 'Venue of the Year' award. Bar licensee Charlie Woolley retired in 2007 after 20 years and he must take a lot of credit for revitalising music sessions and nurturing Sandy Bells during what at times had been a difficult time for 'local boozers' during those decades.

Steven Hannah took over in 2011 and has sympathetically upgraded the bar, which now boasts a very extensive range of whiskies and draught beers - you can even get coffee and simple food! The Shoogles go back to their roots for their 25th Anniversary No body can put an exact date to the day that Shooglenifty was born. The year, however, is not in doubt. In 1990 Angus R Grant, a rebellious highland fiddler, Malcolm Crosbie, a guitarist who got his start in a semi-glam New Wave combo, and James Mackintosh, a drummer with groove going spare went busking in Spain.

The trio experimented with the traditional tunes Angus had known since knee-high to a fiddle stand, and twisted them into the germ of something new and exciting. When they returned to Edinburgh they added banjo, bass and mandolin to the mix and that germ began to grow. The band rehearsed like mad, and played in pubs around the city until Martin Coull, the manager of the newest club in town, La Belle Angele asked them if they’d like to play his joint. “The first gig at La Belle was six punters and an electric bar fire,” remembers Malcolm. “It was the middle of winter and we just huddled round the centre of the floor.” It was perhaps an inauspicious start, but having great faith in the band, Martin turned this one off gig into a residency, the Shoogles built their audience, and by the end of the year it was an essential weekly event for progressive folkies and energetic dance fans alike. Check out the poster above, a remnant from that time, by original Shoogle bass player Conrad Ivitsky Molleson. It would not be unfair to say that the Shoogle sound evolved in La Belle, and many of the band’s early fans have fond memories of that time. The residency led to the band’s first album, Venus in Tweeds, and the launching of the Shoogles onto the international scene. Since then Shooglenifty has entertained audiences from a few hundred in highland village halls to tens of thousands in festival fields. Back home in Edinburgh La Belle Angele became one of the city’s hippest haunts, but sadly burned to the ground in the fire of 2002. Fast forward to 2015, and La Belle Angele lives again in its original location of Hasties Close, just off the Cowgate, (after a very long wait it finally reopened in November 2014). Shooglenifty is celebrating 25 years and where better to have

the biggest, banging party to celebrate that milestone, but the club that launched them on their way. The Untied Knot – the latest in an illustrious cover art career for John Byrne John Byrne has quietly become a national treasure of the past couple of decades. Arguably Scotland’s greatest living artist: he recently had a major retrospective at the National Portrait Gallery and several of his portraits are included in the gallery’s permanent collection. He is also well known as a writer of plays, films, and TV series (Tutti Frutti anyone?). One of his best known works, The Slab Boys, has just completed a sell-out revival at Edinburgh’s King’s Theatre. Given such a stellar career you might wonder how we persuaded him to design the cover of Shooglenifty’s new album. It’s a simple story, the band bumped into him at a gig and, as a fan, he offered his services. Despite James losing his number not once but twice, the brief was (finally) despatched and the great man duly delivered (some months before the band as it turns out). Getting Byrne to design the cover for The Untied Knot saw him continue a long love affair with music. In the 1960s and 70s he designed covers for folk luminaries Stealer’s Wheel, Gerry Rafferty, Billy Connolly, and Donovan. A less well-known commission was received from The Beatles in 1968, for the album that was to become The White Album. Byrne’s design wasn’t used, but reappeared in 1980 as the cover for The Beatles’ Ballads compilation.

Benzie back where it all began to launch debut album He became a star student at one of America’s most prestigious music schools but Alan Benzie will never forget the lessons he learned at the piano in the Jazz Bar in Edinburgh when he launched his debut album on 29 April. He also plays the Blue Lamp in Aberdeen on Thursday, 7 May. The twenty-five-year-old from Glasgow was a pupil at St Mary’s music school in Edinburgh, where he originally studied violin, when the owner of the Jazz Bar, Bill Kyle, used to phone him, sometimes at the last minute, to come over and play with some of the best musicians on the touring circuit. “I remember once getting a call just after I’d gone to bed,” says Benzie. “It was Bill, phoning to say that the pianist he’d booked hadn’t turned up and asking if I could deputise. So I got up, had a quick shower, got dressed, dashed over to Chambers Street, and played the gig.” His experiences at the venue were not always quite so impromptu. As a teenager who had shown considerable promise, he had been asked to play the Saturday afternoon slot regularly and he would later go on to play residencies at the club with musicians including the Russian trumpeter Valery Ponomarev and American vibes player Joe Locke. Once he arrived at Berklee, after winning the inaugural Young Scottish

Jazz Musician of the Year competition in 2007, Benzie played with other notable musicians including saxophonists Jerry Bergonzi and Joshua Redman. He also won the college’s Jazz Performance Award in 2008, the Alex Ulanowski Award for outstanding composition in 2009 and 2010, and the Billboard Magazine Endowed Scholarship, which is given to the year’s outstanding student, in 2010. Such achievements couldn’t have been further from Benzie’s mind when he began studying violin at St Mary’s. He enjoyed playing the instrument and sat in on the school’s monthly jazz classes but when he heard Swedish pianist Esbjörn Svensson, whose trio EST enjoyed huge worldwide popularity in the early 2000s, he decided he had to become a pianist. Svensson, who died in a diving accident aged forty-four in 2008, became a mentor to Benzie as the pair had long conversations about music on EST’s frequent visits to Scotland. Now Benzie is leading his own trio, featuring Edinburgh-born, Londonbased Andrew Robb (bass) and Hungarian drummer Marton Juhasz, and releases his first album, Traveller’s Tales, this month. It features music inspired by his own travels. “I’ve been lucky enough to spend time in different places and this has had a big impact on the way I look at the world and how I write music. I also love a good yarn,” he says. “All of the tunes on the album have a story behind them, some of longer ones being like diary entries and the shorter ones more like capturing an image.” He doesn’t have a tune about running over to Chambers Street in response to an urgent phone call, he says, but he is looking forward to being back on the stage where his own story began.

EVERING : debut EP : 'Running Circles' release date - 18 May : www.everingmusic.com

Introducing London based, Scots folk singer songwriters Chris Yendell and Dawn Coulshed, who together are Evering. Dawn and Chris first met on the Edinburgh music scene in 2013, but it wasn't until

the following year that their paths crossed again, this time in London. The inheritance of an old piano sparked their first collaboration and the beginning. Chris has a raw yet uncompromisingly

welcoming sound that showcases his strong vocals and full sounding acoustic guitar riffs. He has supported the likes of Two Door Cinema Club with a previous band and has a wide range of influences ranging from Ben Howard through to Led Zeppelin. Dawn trained as a classical pianist in Edinburgh before moving to London to pursue her career as a singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Growing up around the traditional music of the Highlands, Dawn was also influenced by the music of Jeff Buckley and Elbow. Her graceful yet rich piano work and truly stunning vocals really stand up behind the sound that Evering have created. The now London based band thrive on delivering strong harmonies laid over powerful yet warm tones, which are governed by intertwined melodious piano This comes across strongly in their forthcoming debut EP, Running Circles due for release on 18 May. The combination of Chris and Dawn’s wideranging influences shines through in Evering's material, which is immediately engaging and memorable.

Sleep Dream Forget

Ripped From The Wire Spine ep download Release Date: Out Now

"The EP captures Josephine’s quirky style beautifully; a refreshing debut that makes her stand out from the crowd, certainly in these Northern plains anyway. Her music has a direct approach with the lyrics taking centre stage, wrapped in her accomplished almost Ben Folds style with a nod to Regina Spektor (who she has stated as being an influence). Tracks like You (Are Not The Reason), is a crushingly simple yet charming address to a former flame. If she can continue to go from strength to strength she is capable of delivering greatness.
