Admiral Fallow, NOISE and Glasgow Distillery Company Set To Release ‘The Distilling Project’ The first single malt and gin distillery to be built in Glasgow since 1902 is marking another first, as it announces musical collaboration with Scottish indie band Admiral Fallow and opera company NOISE For The Love of Craft: ‘The Distilling Project’ sees Glasgow Distillery Company collaborate with Admiral Fallow and NOISE to bring a new musical concept to the Scottish Licenced Trade. The Glasgow Distillery Company (GDC) - who make the award winning Makar Glasgow Gin have unveiled their plans to create an opera set in the backdrop of their distillery. Working alongside composer Gareth Williams (306, Dawn, Hirda, The Sloans Project), the opera has been commissioned by New Opera In Scotland Events (NOISE).

Click this link to watch a video about 'The Distilling Project' https://vimeo.com/202958096

An unusual partnership and a first in Scotland, this exciting opera aims to attract both indie music fans and opera aficionados. Based around the broad theme of distilling, Admiral Fallow and NOISE will work together to find completely new ways for story and song to exist together in a new bespoke opera, that will encompass two very distinct musical genres.

Company, explains:

“An operatic performance that pays homage to distilling? It’s not something I imagined but after a chance meeting with Gareth, we knew that we could create something that is really special. His passion for music is infectious and the partnership with the talented Admiral Fallow just works. As distillers we pride ourselves on Liam Hughes, CEO of The Glasgow Distillery creating the finest craft products. This new collaboration will explore distilling poetically and we’re really excited to part of this fantastic project.” Sarah Hayes of Admiral Fallow said: “Co-writing an opera will be a brand new experience for us. We met with Gareth and the singers Shuna Scott Sendall and Douglas Nairne last December to get the writing process started, and it was a very productive week. We're really looking forward to collaborating further with NOISE and GDC, and seeing the opera develop over the coming year". The innovative opera is set to be an atmospheric and musically intricate collaboration between composer Gareth Williams (NOISE) and Admiral Fallow, with a libretto by Siãn Evans and directed by James Robert Carson (NOISE). It will premiere in The Glasgow Distillery Company in 2018.

THE SECRET NORTH :: Scottish Tour tour dates 18-15 June @ www.thesecretnorth.com/gigs The Secret North bring together six world-class musicians from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Scandinavia in a cross-cultural celebration of new music that bridges the divide between folk, classical, traditional and avantgarde in six new compositions. Featuring: Donald Grant – Fiddle / Ailie Robertson - Harp / Sondre Meisfjord - Double Bass / Karen Tweed - Accordion / Jarlath Henderson - Whistle, Pipes / Marit Fält – Mandola As musical collaborations go, this promises to be an extraordinary music interchange. Individually, each member has carved out a reputation for not just mastering their chosen fields, but rising above, redefining and renewing the musical world they come from. In The Secret North, they come together to premiere six new compositions, written by each musician specifically for the ensemble, resulting in a concert of enthralling new music, grounded in tradition, but shot through with the adrenaline of contemporary influences. This is music that is both ancient and utterly new. The Secret North was the brainchild of Ailie Robertson and Donald Grant who have been friends since they were teenagers. Both have played folk music all their lives, but are also heavily involved with the UK classical scene Donald plays with The Elias Quartet, one

On Vinyl Noise now ..... TRACK OF THE MONTH: The Peak Beneath The Sea // We Came From Wolves by Jamie Hart We Came from Wolves have earned a reputation as one of Scotland’s best upcoming bands since their formation in 2011. Their 2015 self-titled album was a successful blend of alt rock/pop that won them many plaudits including a Scottish alternative music award for “Best Rock”. The confidence that emits from the band is strikingly noticeable in new single, The Peak Beneath the Sea. Raw, punchy riffs are laced with a fluctuating lyrical delivery from frontman Kyle Burgess while backing screams punctuate most of the track. This changing pace can be felt most when drummer, Andy Donaldson is let loose during the chorus. It is commendable to hear a band try something new and even better when they succeed as well as We Came From Wolves have on The Peak Beneath the Sea. The track is a taste of what is to come as the band plan to go back into the recording studio to begin work on a second album this year.

Born and brought up in Inverness, Liza has been involved in folk music for many years. Although classically trained in piano, her family background of a big Glasgow-Irish clan of musicians and singers on her father's side, and the Gaelic song tradition of her mother's Isle of Lewis heritage, inevitably meant a strong pull towards the folk scene. On her first solo album of original songs and tunes, Fine 'n' Rosy, Liza brings together some top players, including cousin, Rua Macmillan, winner of Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Of the Year 2009, Alasdair Taylor of the Folk Award-winning band, The Elephant Sessions, and Robin Abbot of The Mystic Shoes. This intimate album comprises reflective ballads and uptempo songs with catchy choruses, complemented by rollicking trad-style tunes and dreamy instrumentals.

Orkney Folk Festival Orkney 25-28 May

One of Scotland’s longest-running folk festivals, celebrating its 35th outing in 2017, the Orkney Folk Festival is one of the most prolific events in the Scottish and UK folk calendars, and one of the highlights of Orkney’s diary of community events. An entirely voluntary run event, the festival annually attracts artists from all corners of the folk world - from leading international names to up and coming fresh faces - to Stromness, in Orkney’s West Mainland, for four days of concerts, ceilidhs, clubs, sessions, talks and craic. Artists and audiences are welcomed by and into Orkney’s own thriving folk scene, with Orcadian artists providing around two thirds of the festival programme. Line-up announced across December-March, with tickets on sale in April, around six weeks ahead of the event. This is relatively close to the festival itself, as the festival consists of around 35 individually programmed and ticketed events, rather than offering all-in-one day or weekend tickets. Artists visiting the festival perform on several occasions, though, offering a number of chances to catch them over the weekend.

Edinburgh is set to welcome what aims to be one of the most exciting music festivals in Scotland for 2017. SpringFest, an indoor festival with numerous covered outdoor areas, takes place on the bank holiday weekend of 2728 May at the city's Corn Exchange.
