Off The Record Music Event Announced For Galashiels Festival promoters, band managers, record label representatives and a sound engineer are among the key music industry figures set to share their knowledge at the Off The Record day, which takes place at MacArts in Galashiels on Saturday 5 December.
Nora Winstanley (Henry's Cellar Bar) will be speaking at Off The Record Galashiels www.facebook.com/Henryscellarbar
The youth event, open to anyone aged 14-25, will provide advice sessions focusing on key aspects of the industry, including releasing music, getting/organising gigs, promotion and working in the business. Confirmed speakers include Claire Donna [Soma Records], Nick Roberts [Electric Fields Festival], Edinburgh booker Ben Proudlock [Mash House], BBC Producer Amy Ferguson [The Janice Forsyth Show] and sound engineer Nora Winstanley [Henry's Cellar Bar]. They will be joined by Grainne Braithwaite [Synergy Concerts], Sarah Quinn [Academy of Music & Sound], Toni Malyn [EmuBands] and Justine Ward [GR Management] pictured, who works with acts including Primal Scream and Texas. “Musicians and those interested in working in the business often need help when it comes to releasing and promoting their music, as well as getting their first gigs,” says Michael Lambert, co-director of Born To Be Wide, the company which organises the day. “Off The Record provides the basic knowledge to get started and ensures they avoid the most common mistakes.” Previous events have led to attendees getting work placements, gigs and national media coverage. And Lambert’s fellow Born To Be Wide director, Olaf Furniss, adds that the speakers have been hand-picked to be relevant to the audience. “Everyone speaking at the event works with emerging artists and budding industry professionals, and as several speakers are in same age group as the audience, they are perfectly placed to talk about how to get work in the business,” he says.
The Galashiels event sees Born To Be Wide partner with Scottish Borders Council, Youth Borders and Borders Creative Arts & Business Network. “Off The Record is a unique opportunity to get the practical skills for working in music and is relevant for both musicians and anyone interested in working on the industry side,” says James Mackintosh, Youth Music Forum coordinator at Youth Borders. “Off The Record is a great way for young people involved in music to connect with each other as well as some fantastic people already working in the business,” says Kelsey Jubin, creative learning manager (Acting), arts development, Scottish Borders Council. “It is a pleasure to be working with Born to Be Wide to deliver this event.”

It’s a compliment that the violinist from Bangalore appreciates for sure but as she points out, it’s actually just confirmation that she’s doing her job properly. “In the Carnatic tradition that I trained in everything is based on the voice,” she says. “To play any phrase, whether your instrument is a melody instrument or a drum, you have to be able to sing it. Phil Cunningham’s Christmas Songbook Returns this December For 5 Scottish Concerts Following the huge success and popularity of Phil Cunningham’s Christmas Songbook over the last 9 years, he is delighted to announce they will be returning once again and this time taking to the road for five shows in Aberdeen, Perth, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Teemed with jovial anecdotes, modern and traditional Christmas music and exquisite musicianship that will tug at ones heartstrings, it is indeed “the perfect way to fill up your festive fuel tank” The Scotsman. Phil will be joined by some of the finest musicians on the Scottish folk scene including: Eddi Reader, Karen Matheson, John McCusker, Kris Drever, Ian Carr and Kevin McGuire along with a special guest Brass Band. What can you say about Phil Cunningham, a superb innovative instrumentalist, with not simply the fastest fingers in the West but some of the most sensitive ones, too! He is fondly remembered from his days with Silly Wizard and Relativity and as witty musical partner of the great Shetland fiddler, Aly Bain. Also widely recognised from his television and radio presenting, he has been involved in some of the seminal programmes that have enabled Scottish music to walk tall, a true ambassador for traditional music. Also a humourist, his breezy banter can have a 2000-seat hall falling about in the aisles. Phil often keeps high company and no less is true for this year’s special Christmas gathering. A powerful mix of lead vocalists include the inimitable Eddi Reader, who has celebrated a career spanning over 3 decades and has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting
performers. With an MBE for outstanding contributions to the arts, 3 BRIT awards, a #1 single and 8 critically acclaimed solo albums, Eddi is considered to be “one of Scotland’s greatest national treasures” The Scotsman. Karen Matheson OBE, is recognized the world over as the haunting lead vocalist of Celtic supergroup, Capercaillie and one of "the finest Gaelic singers alive today" Billboard Magazine. Kris Drever, the young Orcadian singer and guitarist is part of the backbone of today’s contemporary roots scene and is widely admired as a solo artist, collaborator, and member of folk superstars, Lau. Also joining Phil are multi-instrumentalist, John McCusker, one of Scotland’s most accomplished and versatile musicians in any genre who has worked with artists as diverse as Mark Knopfler, Paul Weller and Patti Smith, Teenage Fanclub and Billy Connolly; Ian Carr, who is known for his original and eclectic approach to traditional music guitar and has established an instantly recognisable sound that has influenced countless musicians and Kevin McGuire who is a highly sought after double bassist who has performed with the likes of Karine Polwart and Kate Rusby.

FREELAND BARBOUR : book + CDs : The Music and the Land Release date -21 November : www.birlinn.co.uk/Music-and-the-Land.html
The Music and the Land The Music of Freeland Barbour "A huge, beautiful two-volume affair, richly illustrated with photographs… The book is a piece of social history, a geography lesson, a heartfelt, often humorous celebration of the tradition to which Freeland has himself contributed so much, and a hymn of love to the land and the sea. It will, undoubtedly, become a collector’s item" – James Robertson
'The Music and The Land is a sound map of Scotland; one that not only shows the lie of the land in all its multifariousness, but conveys its music and, perhaps most essentially, the lifeaffirming pulse of dancing feet' – Scotland Magazine Freeland was brought up in Highland Perthshire and has been a very well-known figure on the Scottish music scene for many years. He is a former member of ground-breaking folk group Silly Wizard, and a founder member of two of the country’s most successful ceilidh dance bands, the Wallochmor Ceilidh Band and the Occasionals. His compositions for Scottish dancing are hugely popular and have been recorded and performed all over the world. In this book he recalls his life in music, presenting a tour in words, photographs and
musical notation through the lands that have inspired him – covering the whole of Scotland and beyond. His compositions are gathered here with the work of some of Scotland’s leading photographers, in a book that is a both an invaluable resource for the working musician and wonderful tribute to Scotland’s landscape and traditions. Freeland, who was born in Edinburgh and brought up in Perthshire, is one of Scotland’s leading accordionists and has performed with many of the world’s greatest traditional musicians. A BBC music producer for a number of years, Freeland has taught at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He runs a music publishing company and is the owner and former manager of Castlesound in East Lothian, one of the leading independent recording studios in the UK.
GIGnotes .....
The book + CD is being launched with a musical evening on 21 November in Café Kazmiranda in Berwick-upon-Tweed at 7.30pm. Along with Freeland the other musicians will be Mairi Campbell an awardwinning fiddle-player and singer; Kevin Macleod a master of fretted stringed instruments and their special guest, Northumberland’s own virtuoso Alistair Anderson on concertina, and Northumbrian Pipes. Down The Line
The Music and the Land
Igor Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring
Down The Line is the new album from Glasgow-born singer/ songwriter Johny Corrigan. It is the much-anticipated follow-up to Johny’s acclaimed debut Inchfad Drive, released in 2013. The album consists entirely of self-penned songs and Johny has recruited an impressive line-up of artists for the recording.
This CD is intended as an accompaniment to the book The Music and the Land, a journey of words, photography and melody through the lands that have inspired Freeland Barbour’s compositions. The sampler contains 14 tracks taken from recordings over the past 35 ears and illustrating some of the music from the book. It is available for £5, or free with each copy of the book.
This stunning reworking for jazz octet of Igor Stravinsky's masterwork retains all of the themes and most of the exquisite orchestration of the original composition. Improvisational sections appear organically out of Stravinsky's score, allowing band members to be featured as individual soloists as the piece unfolds. With personnel drawn from Scotland, England and Germany, this international group is a world-class ensemble, completely at ease with each other and this incredibly complex music.

Armed with swagger, a thumping singalong chorus and a fervent holler, the title track of the EP is the band at their rousing, anthemic best. The rest of the EP doesn’t disappoint with the raucous anger of Liars, Liars, Liars, the jaunty tale of a war hero that is Sam Did Run and the epic, percussive Gone to Ground.
A new singer is emerging as an exciting recording artist and live performer. Gavin Blackie is delighted to introduce his debut album ‘Laid Bare’. On the same day the album is released, Gavin will perform at Edinburgh’s Church Hill Theatre. Gavin has strived to create an image and album that has been five years in the making. Gavin himself, based on his life experiences, has penned every track on the album.

Shattered Echoes
In Praha
‘Newly minted psychedelic’ band from Glasgow have their debut self-titled EP released on infamous student run record label Electric Honey. Brothers Kris and Pete have encapsulated all that is great about psychedelic, garage, rock and pop music into this record. A perfectly balanced EP.
Foxbeef: Powerful, melodic, hard rock with grunge sensibilities. Foxbeef released their début album Shattered Echoes on the 27 June, 2015. The drums were recorded at TPot Studios in Kinross with Robin Wynn Evans, whose credits include The Manic Street Preachers & The View. The band took on the responsibility to record and produce the rest of the album themselves, working as hard as they could over the course of a year to get the album to a place that reflected the bands personality and energy.
Paul Mellon (Guitars): This is our second single of our debut EP which we aim to release this autumn. In Praha is a song about 2 people falling in love in Prague. The main riff was inspired by Here Comes Your Man by Pixies and the solo is my own very poor imitation of / homage to Nels Cline's solo in Impossible Germany by Wilco. Some have called it catchy.

IAIN MORRISON
July Moon
Even Song
EAS
July Moon is the second studio album from singersongwriter Alistair Ogilvy - a strong collection of selfpenned material released on his own label and recorded at CHEM19 studios. Alistair was determined to push some genre boundaries while focusing on varying themes of love and loss, poetry and nostalgia. Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow produced the album and it also features Karen Mathieson from Capercaillie on guest vocals. This new release is sure to gain him new admirers and open up exciting opportunities.
Electric guitarist, re-imagining jazz, folk, rock and choral music. Born in London, Steve Garrett has lived and traveled across the UK, Antartica, Canada and California, and now calls Scotland home. His music springs from a lifetime of influences from diverse sources and performances. Even Song include songs of loss, longing, inspiration by landscape, resolution and hope. The reflective mood mirrors the fading light at the end of the day. Composers range from the 16th Century through folk and the 1980s to contemporary European jazz, with some original compositions. Arrangements bring out the full resonance of the guitar, sometimes backed by loops recorded in real time.
It is never easy for a son to follow in the footsteps of a famous father, so Iain Jnr chose not to. He gave up the world of solo piping and went on his own musical journey. But what he was taught in his formative years is deep within him and this album is a definite attempt at some kind of filtering of the music of his hinterland. There is also a story present, sometimes a rocky one, of a father and son's relationship formed through a rich tradition and an art form that is deeply important to their culture and to both of them personally. There is a mixture of all these elements in this album and Iain Morrison is an artist who is following his own path, wherever that may take him.

Skyline are a Scottish band from Edinburgh looking to revolutionize the musical boundaries that lie in place today. We are searching for the balance between electronic music and live music to change musical opinions. We adopt melodic undertones to inflict emotion but will always embrace elements of contemporary music.
Glasgow sextet James Edwyn & The Borrowed Band were formed in 2013 and soon established a cult following that set up a ripple effect carrying their name far and wide. Their music is a mix of alt country and folky rock roots orientated Americana. They showcased at the 2014 Celtic Connections and realised they had enough material to start putting their debut album 'The Tower' together. Recorded in Scotland an additional session was recorded at Smecky studios in Prague where the strings for the track 'The Last Waltz' were played by the world renowned Prague Philharmonic Listen/Watch: Orchestra. Roddy Hart also guest vocals on the track.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download URVANOVIC
RACHEL SERMANNI
DON'T SHOOT
Amateurs
Tied to the Moon
The Wonderkid
The debut album from Edinburgh’s orchestral noise-pop collective, 'Amateurs’ is a spectacular amalgamation of live and programmable instrumentation that creates an overwhelmingly powerful sound. “Pure, simplistic and beautiful” - Artrocker "It’s the kind of music that makes me want to type all day in an attempt to describe its beauty” - The 405 “Urvanovic have managed to create a sound that is both complex and enchanting” The Vinyl District
Tied To The Moon was conceived in an apartment above a pottery studio deep in the sticks of Nova Scotia where Rachel had four days of complete stillness with no means to communicate with the outside world - during silent afternoons of coffee and pistachios, Rachel would sit, in total solitude; writing; reading; playing music. In the space of these four days she unintentionally wrote six songs - four that would later become the core of Tied To The Moon: ‘Tractor’, ‘This Love’, ‘Banks Are Broken’ and ‘Old Lady's Lament’.
"This EP should come with a warning, one listen to this and you'll be hooked" - Michael Chapman Chordblossom. “For a band who are both relatively new and irritatingly young, it’s impressive this track (Panic) is very much the finished product. Catchy, welcoming and flawlessly presented, they’re ready for a big step forward.”- BBC Across The Line. Don't Shoot entered Glasgow's 'Soundwave Music Competition' and after storming through the heats, they played the final at Glasgow's O2 ABC on the 10th of January 2015 and were announced winners that very night.
