Conference & Networking Programme Announced For World's First Music Tourist Summit in Glasgow #musicsummit A musical airline, a hotel with its own recording studio, a heavy metal cruise and a Scottish travel company offering festival packages to Cuba, are just some of the presentations due to feature at the first international Music Tourist Summit in Glasgow on 18-19 November. Unveiled at the World Travel Market in London yesterday, the full programme highlights innovative initiatives where music and tourism converge, providing insights into how they can mutually benefit businesses, organisations and the artistic community. Moreover, in keeping with two industries based around enjoyment and connecting with people, the event features a range of relaxed networking opportunities. “The Music Tourist Summit is the perfect opportunity for destination marketing organisations, hotels, attractions and other hospitality businesses to learn how this growing niche can boost visitor numbers and increase awareness,” says founder, Olaf Furniss. “For all those working on the music side, it will introduce a wide range of areas for potential partnerships and collaborations.” The conference takes place in the Drygate

Music Tourist Summit Unveils Programme PRESENTATIONS .....

Destination Music: Music forms a key component of Hamburg’s promotional strategy and attracts more music tourists than Berlin, Munich and Cologne combined. The umbrella organisation Hamburg Marketing has developed a wide range of initiatives working with a variety of partners from the grassroots scene to promoters of large musicals and the recently-opened Elbphilharmonie. Presented by Johannes Everke (Hamburg Marketing) Destination Music: Icelandair is the founding partner of the annual Airwaves Festival, which is now Reyjkavik’s biggest tourist event and has played a significant role in boosting visitor numbers. The airline supports a variety of different music activities which in turn have also stimulated general interest in the country. Mike Reynolds (Icelandair)

Julia Jones, Found In Music Brewery on the first day and is followed by a reception at the City Chambers and an evening event comprising music, food and socialising at the Citizen M Hotel. On the Saturday, delegates will have a further opportunity to connect on a Glasgow Music City Tour, followed by a presentation by The SSE Hydro and lunch. The Music Tourist Summit is the world’s first international event to bring together the music and hospitality sectors and features presentations, workshops and networking opportunities. It aims to generate ideas and recommendations for future partnerships and collaborations, by strengthening mutual understanding between the industries. The summit will serve as the foundation for an international network, and will lead to the establishment of a consultancy to assist with the development of music tourism initiatives. Music Tourist founder, Olaf Furniss, is behind the award-winning Wide Days conference and showcase event, which won the Best Networking Event 2014 at the Yearly Music Convention Awards. He has extensive experience working for some of Europe’s largest music industry events, has been a member of the Scottish Tourist Guides Association since 1995 and as a journalist has reported from a range of exotic locations and events for the BBC, The Guardian, The Scotsman and the Press & Journal. The summit pass costs £200 and includes lunches and a buffet on Friday evening.

Destination Music: music tours range from a guided walk of key locations (taking place on day two), to fully fledged packages to exotic countries. What are the challenges for travel agents looking to develop this niche and what benefits do they bring promoters and artists? Kath Bateman (Caledonia Worldwide) Cruising To Success: Music Cruises are a growth market, increasingly catering for niche genres and seeking to offer bespoke shore-based excursions. Among the European success stories is the Full Metal Cruise, partnership between Tui Cruises and the ICS Network, promoters of the enormous Wacken Festival. Currently eyeing Scotland for future sailings, we look at what makes a destination attractive as a port of call. Jan Struve (ICS Festival Service) Beyond The Bed: In 2011 The Nordic Choice hotel chain opened its first hotel targeting musicians, promoters and fans. This year it followed up its successful debut with venture which houses a recording studio and allows guests to make music. The first album recorded in the hotel is due to be released in the spring. Robert Holan (Nordic Choice Hotels) Beyond The Bed: Dr Julia Jones has worked with leading brands including Intercontinental, Saga and Warner, to create music packages for guests tailored around demographic data. Her next project is to set up a network of hotels to create a circuit for emerging talent. Dr Julia Jones (Found In Music) Amplifying The Legacy: Bon Scott’s Scottish home town, Kirriemuir, attracts thousands of AC/DC fans from 27 different countries for its annual Bonfest and a recently unveiled statue has quickly become a top visitor attraction. This in turn funds the local youth music initiative, DD8, and gives the local economy a significant boost. How can the legacy be developed and be tied in to Scotland giving birth to three quarters of the original AC/DC line up? Graham Galloway (DD8 Music/Bonfest) Studying Success: In 2011 UK Music published the Wish You Were Here report, the world’s first study detailing the value of music tourism for an entire country. Updated annually, it now includes more regional data and is proving a valuable tool for both the music and tourism sectors. How has it evolved and how can it be used to further boost this segment? Tom Kiehl (UK Music) Destination Digital: Streaming gigs and festivals is becoming an increasingly effective way of promoting destinations, both in terms of costs and the type of data generated. We look at some examples of how it can benefit musicians and promoters, while also generating interest in where they are playing. Dougal Perman (Inner Ear)

Rock Radio Glasgow triumph in their bid for the 96.3FM West of Scotland Radio Licence Ofcom has announced that Rock Radio Glasgow have been awarded the 96.3FM commercial West of Scotland Radio license. Rock Radio Glasgow were up against competition from Caledonia Holdings Ltd (GO 96.3 Glasgow), Original 96 Glasgow Ltd (Original FM), Radio Clyde Ltd (Clyde Rocks). Rock Radio Glasgow won against the odds with a local bid put together by Glasgow music scene veterans; they fought off fierce competition from national players with support from local businesses, politicians, bands and thousands of rock fans, many of them writing letters of support to OFCOM. Music promoter and venue owner Donald MacLeod, along with businessman and music industry veteran, Paul McManus and media entrepreneur Ciaran O’Toole, were the driving force behind the successful bid. Rock Radio Chairman Macleod said: “ This is fantastic news , we were the outsiders from the start, in many ways written off by some in the radio industry. A feat that couldn't have happened without the support of the public, the bands and many in the music industry , and we are truly humbled and full of gratitude for that support.”

While, bid leader O’Toole said: “it has taken nearly a year from inception to winning the bid, the team worked tirelessly to make the dream a reality, we are now preparing for the stations launch in 2017.” Industry professionals and politicians have been vocal in their support for the bid recognising the cultural and business benefits it will bring to the city. “We are a UNESCO City of Music and our passion, as Glaswegians, for our local musicians and thriving music scene would benefit enormously from a station dedicated to enhancing our city’s music sector once again.” Councilor Frank McAveety, Leader of City of Glasgow Council “I firmly support a radio station that is a true champion of Glasgow’s live music scene, one

which will focus on a currently underrepresented audience, and give the Scottish music industry a cost effective advertising platform to promote themselves.” - Sandra White, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Glasgow Kelvin ( Scottish National Party) “The creation of a dedicated rock music station would undoubtedly increase the demand for concerts of this nature, providing many benefits across the city as a whole to venues, promoters, bars, restaurants and hotels etc.“ - Geoff Ellis, CEO at DF Concerts Ofcom will shortly publish a statement setting out the key determining factors for the award of this licence, which will be issued for a twelveyear period.

SARASWATI :: album :: 'Magic In My Everyday' release date - 11 November @ www.saraswati.co.uk

Saraswati is delighted to announce the release of her hotly anticipated debut album. It has been an amazing year for the enigmatic songstress who has been compared to the likes of Sade and Lauren Hill.

Her earlier EP release met with critical acclaim and two tracks were hand picked by cult movie producer, Noel Clark for the latest smash hit movie The Brotherhood. Bad Habits and Sweet Little Bassline featured in the movie and have attracted a real underground following of fans. "I have been working hard doing many little gigs up and down the country to get my music out there and I’m so happy with the response to the shows and my music. From

playing small basement shows in Glasgow, Leeds, and London to being asked to play Party at the Palace in Linlithgow has been fantastic experience for me … what an incredible year I've had so far!” said Saraswati. Saraswati has had an interesting start to life. Born and brought up in an orphanage in Nepal where her only sibling was adopted and taken to the UK as a youngster. After some time her sister had eventually learned enough English to tell her adopted mother that she had left someone behind and immediately they went back for her and the siblings were reunited. Saraswati always found solace in songs and music and she has seamlessly managed to combine the influences of both cultures from her birth land and in the UK, the country she now calls home. Her debut Album Magic In My Everyday is testament to her real deep rooted love of hip hop, soul and reggae, all delivered with an understated beauty and a natural pop twist. To end the year on a high with release of her album she will perform a series of concerts in the UK, which will include London, Leeds and Glasgow with more to be announced. See her live and listen to the music…you’ll be drawn into the magic that is Saraswati. Magic In My Everyday was released on 11 November and available to order on iTunes now @ https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/magic-in-my-everyday/id1168061309

Backing vocals are provided by Jo Shaw and Katie Macarthur, who also perfectly complements Iona Macdonald’s voice by providing harmonies on the Ballad of a former prostitute, ‘Fairground’. John Alexander adds acoustic guitar to ‘ To Decide’ and ‘Days of Grass and Sun’, and the album is fully realised by Laura-Beth Salter on mandolin and Jez Hellard on harmonica.

In 2014, an invitation to open for Television brought the pairing back to the stage for the first time in almost 2 years. Inevitably, this lead to the realisation that both had been unintentionally writing songs destined for the duo.

‘Pour’, is a defiant and quirky opening track, telling a tangled tale of love and alcoholism, brought to life by Craig Laurie on drums and Stephen McGourty on bass. ‘Feed the Monster’, ‘New Year Rag’ and ‘After Sun’ are overtly political, but without the oft dictatorial edge of protest songs. “Life is political”, according to Once seasoned with the progressive Iona. “Politics isn’t about detached politicians. fingerpicking of Tasker’s guitar and the impelling It’s about how we choose to live our lives every vocal delivery of Macdonald, recording became day and how we choose to treat the people and the next step. Whilst the almost constant the world around us. It’s about the questions comparisons to Sandy Denny and Bert Jansch we ask.” might leave some to expect yet another attempt at reviving the folk revival of the 1960’s, the The band shifts into classic country territory for colours on display here are contemporary the leaving song, Diesel Engine complete with reflections.

There is often dark humour and a rich seam of inspiration to be found when life leads you off the beaten track, through the dark cities and scattered bars of ‘Lost Is Not Losing’. For an album that is borne from tales of the road, it is only fitting that Tasker and Macdonald take the songs back to their breeding ground as they embark on a German tour in the winter, with UK dates to follow in April 2017 Album launch on 25 November in Glasgow's State Bar - event page @ www.facebook.com/events/354375861562694/

Homecoming Gig For Glasgow’s Ashton Lane Classic Grand, Glasgow - 7 December - www.ashtonlaneofficial.com

Fresh from their European tour, Ashton Lane will celebrate being back on home turf with a concert in Glasgow on 7 December, where they will be joined by Wet Wet Wet's Graham Duffin.

2016 has already seen them perform at the famous Country 2 Country festival in London, as well as receiving nominations in two categories at this year’s BCMAs (British Country Music Awards) for best duo and best song. They also played an impressive set at McEwan’s Party At The Palace in August and their most recent album Nashville Heart received five star reviews.

O'Connor and they are part of a new wave of homegrown modern country music originating in the UK.

The band has a romantic back-story and come from fine musical stock. Ashton Lane is fronted by husband and wife duo, Esther and Tim

Esther’s musical heritage however spans right back to her childhood. She remembers being out on tour at only five years of age with Elton John on his US tour accompanying her Dad’s band Wet Wet Wet. Graham Duffin often accompanies Ashton Lane as a guest band member and will be playing with Tim and Esther on this Glasgow date. “The excitement of the live shows and a love of travelling got under my skin very early” says O’Connor. “I loved everything from the hotels, to turning up at the venues for sound checks …and the catering. It was all great fun from start to finish, and I definitely got bitten by the bug!” It’s so nice to have Dad join us at our gigs now. It really is a family affair and it’s a privilege to perform together, doing what we love… playing great music” - Esther O’Connor, Ashton Lane Don’t miss them live on 7 December at Classic Grand, 18 Jamaica Street, Glasgow 8-11pm. Although classically trained in piano, her family background of a big Glasgow-Irish clan of musicians and singers on her father's side, and the Gaelic song tradition of her mother's Isle of Lewis heritage, inevitably meant a strong pull towards the folk scene. On her first solo album of original songs and tunes, Fine 'n' Rosy, Liza brings together some top players, including cousin, Rua Macmillan, winner of Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Of the Year 2009, Alasdair Taylor of the Folk Award-winning band, The Elephant Sessions, and Robin Abbot of The Mystic Shoes. This Girl, This Woman is the debut album by 57-yearold singer Jude Adams, who discovered her talent following a life-changing M.E. diagnosis. The album, which Jude describes as soulful pop with a 60s twist, contains 10 tracks all written and sung by Jude, and produced and arranged by musician Janette Mason. Jude comments: " I always loved to sing, and I always did, but behind closed doors. It was only when I got to 50 that I summoned the courage to start singing in public. And then two years later I was diagnosed with M.E. Performing, work and many ways in which I lived my life had to stop or change significantly. It was debilitating, but led to a lot of personal reflection, and ultimately the silver lining of discovering a passion for songwriting." Stories Untold

Crossing Borders

To Be Free

Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.

‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.

To Be Free is an interim project - in between albums number one and two - for Glasgow's Martha L. Healy. Including two originals and two of Martha's favourite country classics, the EP was recorded with her band over a snowy weekend in Glasgow in January 2016.

The Vivians 10th Anniversary Demos Album #TheVivians10yr - To mark their 10th anniversary of forming, cult indie punk band The Vivians will release a collection of songs spanning their tumultuous career. The self-titled album, digitally released 26th August 2016, will comprise newly mastered unreleased demos and rarities, recorded between 2006 and 2010, accompanied by a new video and artwork. Formed in August 2006, The Vivians dared to dream big and set out to achieve great things. From their humble beginnings in a basement rehearsal room in Edinburgh, through to splitting in April 2010, the band’s story is one of dreams, misguidance and brotherhood.

Wild Things is the first release from East Lothian Alt-Folk singer songwriter Baron Salmon. The four songs are tender tales of moving on, each one showcasing the musicianship, the fine singing and the mature songwriting of their creator. In these songs we also glimpse some of his influences, from Dylan to Bonnie Prince Billy, to Tallest Man on Earth, whilst never losing sight of the exciting new sound that belongs to Baron Salmon.

Oceans are an anthemic alternative rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. Influenced by varied range of acts; 30 Seconds To Mars, Explosions In The Sky, Thrice, and U2, Oceans' sound is a mix of powerful, soulful vocals with sing along choruses to soaring, melodic lead guitar, and rhythm with a punch.

This is an exciting new 4 track EP release that is a departure from my usual sound and has been heavily influenced by my love of pop music. I worked with the incredible Jud Mahoney (Justin Timberlake, Usher, Michael Jackson) who produced this EP, and it's also the first time I have included a co-written track on a release, working with Jud and hitmaker John McLaughlin (Busted, Westlife, Bay City Rollers). scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download ALLAN MACDONALD & NEIL JOHNSTONE The Bruce 700

Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. B-Sides

One Kiss Later

David Altair has just released his 6th album entitled ‘B-Sides’. This is some work that was previously never released and is quite rare. The album has quite a psychedelic feel to it especially ‘we can’t stop now (the Wall)’. The album flows into a journey of ambient sounds and experimentation.

Ashton Lane are part of a new wave of homegrown modern country music originating in the UK and are sure to expand their growing fan base this year. The single One Kiss Later is out on 29 February 2016 Ashton Lane consist of Esther O’Connor and Tim O’Connor. The band performs as a duo but at times as a three piece when Graeme Duffin (Wet Wet Wet) joins them as guest guitarist. The band has a romantic back story, being husband and wife and also come from fine musical stock. Esther O’Connor’s musical heritage however spans right back to her childhood. She remembers being out on tour at only five years of age with Elton John on his US tour accompanying her Dad’s band Wet Wet Wet.
