............ member profile:

John Gourlay

This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members

"The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

John Gourlay was born in Edinburgh and educated at the Royal High School and Edinburgh University, John trained and worked as a music teacher before spending three years at the University of York studying the music of Luciano Berio. As a lecturer at Glasgow Arts Centre (1983-92) he developed an interest in jazz education and, returning to school teaching, set up the Strathclyde Arts Centre Jazz Band and Workshop (1992-9), tutored on the first National Youth Orchestra of Scotland jazz courses (1992-2005) and with Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra (1999-2005). His compositions include chamber music, music for wind band and orchestra, charts for jazz orchestra and pieces for educational use. Several jazz charts were written for and premiered by the Strathclyde band and Persephone (1996), Right On Spring (1997) and Meat On The Bone (2004) were premiered by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland.

In 1999 John moved to Fife to take up the post of Principal Teacher of Music at Dunfermline High School, retiring in 2010. He was involved as a tutor with Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra who premiered Oh Laugh! (2001) and Snowdrop (2005) with Joe Temperley. In 2006 FYJO commissioned a number of pieces for its 30th anniversary and Soliloquy was included in the celebratory CD, featuring former Dunfermline High pupil Kim Macari on trumpet. John also wrote music for class work and school groups and events, including his school wind band; one of these pieces was Sir Patrick Spens, written for former pupil and trombonist Martha Ann Brookes in 2006. Henryson Fables for Fife Youth Concert Band and Explico Algunas Cosas for Fife Youth Orchestra had taken John's music outside jazz groups and the school in 2005 and two years later the Avison String Ensemble gave several performances of his Suite For Strings. This began a period of orchestral composition and in 2008 Fife Youth Orchestra gave four performances of Labyrinth which John had written for his bassist son Calum. In 2010 the Avison Strings expanded to AvisonPlus and included the orchestral version of A Playford Suite in their first repertoire. Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society gave the premiere of Postcards From Scotland in 2012 and played the first complete performance of A Symphony Of Seasons in March 2013. In 2001, John was runner-up in the Scottish Chamber Orchestra's iCompose competition with The Vision Of The Sermon, a chamber music piece inspired by Paul Gauguin's painting of the same name. He remains involved in

music education and also plays oboe and cor anglais in Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society, AvisonPlus and Perth Symphony Orchestra. John is has recently finished a commission from the viola and guitar duo April Randall and Stephen Morrison, 'Stone Stories' - It was premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe 2013 in St Andrew and St George's, George Street, further performances have been given in St Andrews, Dundee and Kirkcaldy.

BEARPIT BROTHERS : EP release date 23 November : www.bearpitbrothers.co.uk

Thirty years in the making, Bearpit Brothers release first EP on 23 November at 7pm, in Glagow's The Glad Cafe. Jim Byrne tells the 30 year story .... It’s the 1980s’s and I catch a gig – somewhere in the bowels of Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom – by a band called ‘The Creeping Charlies’. I’m completely blown away by their dissonant, angular mix of Rock ‘n’ roll, Rockabilly, early Beatles and vocals that remind me a wee bit of Roy Orbison. I’m thinking, those guys look and sound great – they are clearly destined for big things. Fast forward some 30 years and I’m having a coffee with Robert Ruthven in Tinderbox on Glasgow’s Byres Road. Robert is the singer of The Creeping Charles and I’m asking him when the first album will be out. In the intervening years the Creeping Charlies music got even better – even weirder; ‘The Charlies’ sound reared up like a thing living in a world entirely of its own invention. But along the way they encountered tragedy on both a personal and professional front; if you could stack bad luck they would have needed to hire storage facilities to house it. Master tapes of completed albums were lost in studio fires and crashed hard disks, and even more tragically one band member had mental health issues that led to him taking his own life. Band managers and producers came and went – promises grew hope, which then evaporated with the lost tapes. Robert just smiles at my question; he’s heard it too often and knows that whatever answer he gives will stir something uncomfortable in his psyche. I’m still looking forward to the first album; these guys are no longer doing live gigs – but they still make music, are no less great and deserve to be heard. So we hatch a plan… That plan is coming to fruition on 23 November with an EP featuring myself, Robert Ruthven and Larry Alexander – the two remaining active members of the Creeping Charlies. We call ourselves the Bearpit Brothers. The music is a mix of the strong musical flavours that both Robert and Larry bring to everything they do and my own country, rock and roots influences. Think Hawley, think Orbison, Beatles, guitar twang, Rockabilly, pre Rock ‘n’ Roll Country. A glorious cocktail of sounds shaken into something new. The release of their debut EP 'Youth Clubbed' resulted in their nomination for Best Electronic Act at this year's Scottish Alternative Music Awards and a performance at Scotland's premier music business conference 'Wide Days' in Edinburgh. scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download PAUL ANDERSON Land of the Standing Stones Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Paul Anderson, from the heart of rural Aberdeenshire, is one of Scotland’s most respected traditional musicians. Land of the Standing Stones is really a love letter to Paul’s native Aberdeenshire as all but a couple of the 51 tunes on the album are inspired by the people, landscape and history of the North-East of Scotland. The music on the album has all been composed by Paul himself and at 70 minutes in length, it’s a considerable achievement. The music, though rooted in the traditional Scots fiddle idiom, is also contemporary in style. He has been ably supported in this by a superb group of musicians, which includes Shona Donaldson (Scots singer of the year 2009), Swedish citern genius Ale Carr, Ali Napier (Dougie MacLean band) and Scottish acting star Kevin McKidd on guitar and vocals.

Speak From The Start is an EP of cover songs by Scottish fiddle, harp and vocal duo Twelfth Day. The duo were inspired to create Speak From The Start after BBC Radio Manchester asked them to cover You’re The One For Me Fatty by Morrissey as part of their 40th birthday celebrations. Having enjoyed the process of covering a song completely different from their own musical style, Twelfth Day went on to rework tracks by Kanye West, Blondie, Passion Pit and Twin Atlantic. They produced this collection of five captivating songs, which whilst staying true to their original versions, have become something completely different, enticing the listener through the unique sound of Twelfth Day.

This album, NordEste/ NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre
