The MUSIC NEWS Scotland team would like to pass on our sincere condolences to everyone affected by the deaths after the terrible helicopter accident at the Clutha Vaults in Glasgow. Age 14-19 years? Then you can 'Hit The Road'! HIT THE ROAD is a project run by the Scottish Music Centre and supported by Creative Scotland's Youth Music Initiative and the Big Fund Young Start programme which gives young performers between the ages of 14 and 19 years old the opportunity to learn more about the live music industry, before they are given the opportunity to tour across Scotland.
Since Eilidh Hadden's 'Hit The Road' appearance, Eilidh’s music has been featured on a range of TV shows such as Made in Chelsea, and she has recently picked up management in the US. And, like Model Aeroplanes, Eilidh has attracted major record label interest since taking part in 'Hit The Road' www.facebook.com/pages/Eilidh-Hadden/273700849338937

www.hittheroad.org.uk/register One of the most important rites of passage that any musician can undertake is their first tour. As wonderful an experience as it can be, the reality of live music touring is far from a holiday and it is vital to organise the business side of the project before the fun can begin. This is of course easier said than done as there is no one to tell artists what to expect when touring for the first time, that is until now!

'Hit The Road' links young people with professional promoters, managers and personnel who will teach them the essential skills needed to take their music out of the practice room and onto the road. The young acts selected for the project will take part in a series of exclusive workshops, seminars and information sessions before they put their new skills to the test in the real world of

David Paul Graham
This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members
"The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community" David Paul Graham was born in 1951 and studied at Reading University and then with Hans Werner Henze in Cologne. He was three years in Montepulciano, teaching at the music school and organising the local music-theatre contribution to the annual festival. Here he initiated a childrens' composition-course which produced Tre Opere per Burattini (Three Puppet-Operas) written and performed by young people. This project has become a model. His works have been performed and broadcast in Europe and Latin-America. He composed several song-cycles (texts by Hans-Ulrich Treichel, Richard NÃbel, Rose Aulander, Bert Brecht, Ian Stephen), larger works which have been premiered at the Almeida Festival; Columbus Festival, Udine; Steirische Herbst, Austria and in many German cities. He has written music for radio-plays, film music for Volker Schloendorff and Bill Douglas, Music/Video with Harald Klemm (Dolly, a 20-minute artistic commentary on genetic engineering), and his latest opera was The Girls from Theresienstadt for Thomas Neuhoff and the Youth Choir of the Lukas Church, Bonn (Feb. 2010). His didactic work with young people is widely known. In 1996 Lighting the Candle brought together the Tate Gallery, the Orchestra of St. John's Smith Square and the National Youth Music Theatre in the performance of a stage piece with libretto and music by pupils from a London school. SCOTT McWATT : album : A Ceíst Amá relaese date - out now : www.facebook.com/scottmcwattmusic A year is a long time in politics, in affairs of the heart and in songwriting. A world away from the angst of his debut Jekyll And Hyde, A Ceíst Amá bristles with such maturity and depth it’s difficult to believe there’s less than 18 months between records. With each of its twelve tracks representing a calendar month, A Ceíst Amá is a captivating journey through a year taking in west coast Scotland sectarianism (A' Gorm/Glas 'Dath (The Blue and Green), ageing (Jack And Jill), austerity Britain (A Ceíst Amá (A Question Of Time) and war (XI-XI). “After Jekyll And Hyde, I reflected a lot,” says McWatt. “Was it the best record I could have made? Was it rushed? With this record I wanted to prove that I can write more than just songs about girls and getting drunk.” That’s not to say he’s not excellent about writing about either - witness the fizzing strut of lead-off single Aíne Maíre or the beer ‘n’ sun-fuelled blowout of Summertime (featuring Bluebell Ken McCluskey having a gas on harmonica). The influences of traditional Scottish and Irish music and personal heroes such as Johnny Cash, Jack Kerouac and Burns can be heard across A Ceíst Amá, but perhaps the biggest bearing on the record are McWatt’s grandparents. “At night, I often write and play guitar, and take my grandpa to visit my gran in her nursing home,” says McWatt, who’s donating the ticket sales from the album launch at Glasgow’s ABC2 to Alzheimer Scotland. As a very young boy, it was at his grandmother’s knee that McWatt learnt piano, guitar and the joy of singing and songwriting. She was a great talent herself, and turned down the opportunity to be an opera singer at Saint Paul’s in Rome to have Scott’s mother. “She was the one who’d always encourage me, kept me going,” says McWatt. As youth turns to experience and we take on the role of caregivers for those who used to care for us, so we also realise that we have a responsibility to shape the world for those who’ll come after. A year before Scotland takes a historic vote on its future, McWatt has been asked by Yes Scotland to use the rousing A Ceíst Amá at events to help rally support for Scottish independence. Scott said yes to Yes Scotland. ‘When people say we can’t govern ourselves and that we’d just make an awful mess of it, I’m reminded of a quote from (Scottish-born US talk show host) Craig Ferguson,” says McWatt. “He was talking about the differences between Scotland and America, and said that in America failure is not a disgrace. It’s seen as a necessary step towards success. No one is saying it’s going to be perfect but we can finally grow up as a country by making our own decisions and our own mistakes.” A Ceíst Amá was partly funded by Creative Scotland and was produced by The Technical Jar, a Glasgow-based duo of Chris Marshall and Scott Blackwood who pushed McWatt creatively for all he was worth. It wasn’t always pleasant, he admits, but it was worth every disagreement and note of tension. Inspired by the close-knit set up of Ryan Adams’ Heartbreaker album, much of the album’s instrumentation is provided by Blackwood, while Emer Tumilty (John Knox Sex Club) plays violin and Anna Walmsley, the sister of McWatt’s girlfriend, provides vocals.
i’Anson : album : In Chances Of Light
release date - out now : www.facebook.com/iansonmusic
In Chances Of Light is the debut album from i'Anson, packed with personal memories, evoking one man's relationship with a wild and immutable landscape. Cutting loose from the bustle of London life, Hugh Carswell left the city behind in 2006, relocating to the magical island of Jura off the west coast of Scotland. Hugh already had a strong personal connection with the island, it being the home to five generations on his father's side. Jura's beautiful yet bleak landscape and unique community inspired him to create the stunning music featured on In Chances Of Light. For the i'Anson recordings Hugh has brought together the drummer/percussionist Steve Jansen (ex Japan, David Sylvian), the outstandingly talented Scottish Ensemble on strings, and the jazz bassist Dudley Phillips, among others. Carswell prefers to work under the name i'Anson - taken from his grandfather, the writer Hugh I'Anson Fausset. Hugh first began writing In Chances Of Light whilst rebuilding the stone cottage rented by his family since the 1930s and which he had visited for holidays every year since he was born. The opening track of the album 'Your Halo' recalls the childhood innocence of those summers and the continual presence of the island in his conscience. A sense of simplicity permeates the whole album, reflecting on the adjustment from city life that the distant island offered Carswell. The listener is invited to share in the escape to more elemental surroundings. "I always knew that Jura was the perfect place to write an 'honest' kind of record. When I moved here and began to think about making In Chances Of Light, the setting was almost perfect - I just had to renovate my family's ancient cottage and install a few basics like water and electricity! I spent two years practically single-handedly rebuilding and extending the old house and, at the same time, found endless inspiration in the wilderness of the land around me, the simple life, and warmth of the small local community. Once the building was finished I was able to fully return my attention to the main reason I moved to Jura in the first place - writing and recording the music."

Speak From The Start is an EP of cover songs by Scottish fiddle, harp and vocal duo Twelfth Day. The duo were inspired to create Speak From The Start after BBC Radio Manchester asked them to cover You’re The One For Me Fatty by Morrissey as part of their 40th birthday celebrations. Having enjoyed the process of covering a song completely different from their own musical style, Twelfth Day went on to rework tracks by Kanye West, Blondie, Passion Pit and Twin Atlantic. They produced this collection of five captivating songs, which whilst staying true to their original versions, have become something completely different, enticing the listener through the unique sound of Twelfth Day. "The Voice" Season 3 runner-up Terry McDermott and his band the Bonfires have returned with another stunning, sweeping Britrock ballad, co-written with Todd Burman of Australia's Juke Kartel. (Todd also worked on Terry's first post-"Voice" single, "Pictures," which went to number one on the iTunes rock chart.) And judging by the new video for the track, Terry hasn't lost the feeling at all, perfectly suits the dreamy song...and yes, it does rock. (Lyndsey Parker / Rolling Stone)
Esotero is the 5th release by multiinstrumentalist composer, Fraser Fifield. Recorded as a live studio session in summer 2013, it features Fraser with award winning guitarist and long term collaborator Graeme Stephen. single : download Release Date: 1 December The new single from Irish folk singer Heidi Talbot’s latest album ‘Angels Without Wings’, is a beautiful modern day folk song. Co written and sung with King Creosote, AKA Kenny Anderson, ‘Button Up’ was created after the pair discovered a mutual admiration: “He was asked to pick his fantasy band for The Independent and he picked me and Morten Harket from A-ha on joint lead vocals,” Heidi laughs. She conceived the melody for Button Up with Anderson in mind, and he sent back his own lyrics. The result is a brooding urgent love song. Heidi is touring the UK in November ande December with multi instrumentalist/Producer John McCusker and Irish Guitarist and singer John Doyle. COREEN SCOTT
A Scots Chorus Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now
A Scots Chorus is a joint venture between veteran Scots singer Mick West and the fantastic a cappella group Muldoon's Picnic. In mid 2012, West and Muldoon's started exploring the different harmonic possibilities of a body of the most interesting and representative Scots chorus songs they could find and, having decided that some of these songs would benefit from instrumental arrangements too, asked well known arrangers Frank McLaughlin and Stewart Hardy to arrange, manage and perform on the project. It is hoped that the CD and booklet will not only be enjoyable in their own right, but also provide a portal for those who wish to explore the great Scots song repertoire further, and be a motivation and inspiration for all singers and musicians to take this materiel and develop to use it to make their own music. STEPHEN LEE 4 Orchestral Pieces Album : cd Release Date: Out Now
4 Orchestral Pieces is a body of work composed by Stephen Lee.
