SCOTTISH MUSIC CENTRE
............ member profile:
Elena Piras
This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members
"The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"
Sardinian-born Elena inherited her father's love of singing, particularly folk music, from a very early age. As a young child she sang in church choirs and later even appeared weekly on local Italian TV. By the time she was a teenager Elena was an experienced artist performing for large audiences and was singing and playing guitar professionally. Today, she is a popular personality on the gigs and festivals circuit, as well as writing and singing her own material - and enjoying the success of her debut album, Journey. Since moving to the UK at the age of 18, Elena, who speaks six languages and is learning Gaelic, has lived in London, where she cofounded and toured with the successful London Bulgarian choir. In 2006 she moved to Edinburgh, where her work at the Royal Scottish Academy of Art gave her the opportunity to become fully immersed in the music scene in Scotland. Elena is now resident in Lerwick, Shetland, where, along with her singing performances at a full range of venues from gigs to festivals, she's working on her own material and writing arrangements for old traditional songs. Music is Elena's inspiration - being visually-impaired since birth has enabled her to impart a very special meaning to her folk music. As she says, "Nothing compares to the authentic power of Scots, Irish and
Gaelic folk and the way it transports both performer and their audience into its melodies and narrative. No other music seems to convey so vividly the beauty and hardship of a land and its people."

Laura Macdonald :
album : 'Duets'
release date - 15 November : Buy @ http://www.lauramacdonald.net/
Scottish Saxophonist Laura Macdonald and New York pianist David Berkman marked the release of their new Duets album with an EFG London Jazz Festival launch followed by a series of dates in Scotland this month. The two musicians, who have worked together in various line-ups since appearing in a band Macdonald formed for an Edinburgh Jazz Festival concert a few years ago, first played as a duo when they were asked to fill an hour’s slot in the festival’s programme at five minutes’ notice. They had more preparation this time and exchanged emails with ideas and suggestions until they settled on a selection of romantic standards, including It Could Happen to You and My Romance. The album was recorded, with trumpeter Ryan Quigley producing, at Gorbals Sound in Glasgow, where the studio engineers, who are used to rock musicians working at a more leisurely pace, were surprised that Macdonald and Berkman could record an album in one day. “We spent some time sorting out microphone positions,” says Macdonald, who has released two albums of her own and one with the group she coleads with Swedish drummer Martina Almgren as well as working extensively with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, saxophonist Donny McAslin and drummer Tom Bancroft.
The launch concert took place at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London on Saturday, 15 November, when Macdonald and Berkman open for American singing star Dee Dee Bridgwater. They then play Tolbooth, Stirling on Wednesday, 19 November; Blue Lamp, Aberdeen, on Thursday 20; and City Halls, Glasgow, on Friday 21.
“I always enjoy playing with David,” says Macdonald. “He has this great sense of jazz history in his playing, having worked with so many people including Sonny Stitt and Tom Harrell, and like me, he likes to know what “Once we started playing, though, it was like we were playing to an audience. The guys in the studio were amazed. But that was definitely the a song is about before he plays it. Thumb Music
The debut album from Scottish singer and songwriter Kirsty Law accompanied by musicians Rona Wilkie, Marit Falt, Conrad Molleson and David Milligan with special appearance from Edinburgh songsmith Wounded Knee. Creative and sensitive interpretations of traditional material alongside thoughtful and original self penned work.
Fireflight is the new album from singer, songwriter, guitarist and violinist Rowan Ross from Glasgow, Scotland. The album is a beautiful collection of personal, thought-provoking songs, served up in an acoustic heaven featuring some truly wonderful musicianship from a great band.
We are VASQUEZ. We make ‘action-packed’ rock. VASQUEZ was originally three guys who met on Gumtree following a post looking for band members by guitarist/founding member Ciaran Mckenna. The ad lead to him meeting Richard James Iremonger (bass) and Jon Adam (drums) in 2009 and them coming up with the name VASQUEZ; after the hard as nails, heavy machine-gun wielding bad-ass from the film ‘Aliens’. Unfortunately in December 2010 James had to leave the band and that was when Sean Quinn took over on bass duties.

The Festival as the UK's most northerly folk festival is regarded a prestigious event for performers, locals and visitors alike. Organised by a voluntary committee (and run by an even bigger pool of volunteers) the Festival prides itself in reaching out to even the most far flung areas of Shetland. Concerts are organised throughout the isles, consisting of some of the best International, British and Shetland music that the world has to offer. In fact, visiting artistes are regularly dumbfounded by the quantity and quality of local musicians that our remote isles have to offer. www.shetlandfolkfestival.com
