We very sadly have to mark the death of Carey Lander - the 33 year old keyboard player with Camera Obscura - from Osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. A member of the band since 2002 she was diagnosed in 2011. Before her death Carey set up a fundraising campaign to help fund research into this rare form of cancer, and this has so far raised over £67 000.

Shooglenifty The Untied Knot Tour 2015 has been an epic year for Shooglenifty, a band formed 25 years ago in Edinburgh. Retaining four of their original members plus their bass player of 12 years standing, the line up has been invigorated in the past year by fiery young mandolinist Ewan MacPherson who contributes four tunes to their critically acclaimed new CD release The Untied Knot. Also new in 2015 is ‘puirt a beul’ vocalist Kaela Rowan who graces the album with the first ever collection of Shoogle songs. Shooglenifty’s sound springs from traditional Scottish dance music, energised by the beats and bass line of something altogether more contemporary. OBAN LIVE 13-14 May 2016 Returning to Oban this week for the first time since their 10th anniversary celebrations in May, folk-rockers Skerryvore announced plans to launch a new event that will build on the sell out success of the Decade concert. OBAN LIVE will be a 2 day open air concert that will again take place at Mossfield Stadium in the heart of Oban’s town on the 13 and 14 May. The event will again showcase international acts and attract visitors from all over the world. The decision to follow up the 'Decade' event was based significantly on the feedback in the visitor survey and independent economic impact report, with 98.7% of attendees stating they would like an annual event like Decade to be held in Oban.
also stated that the Decade event generated an estimated £1.1million for Oban and the surrounding area. Oban Live is estimated to double that figure with the introduction of a second day and additional capacity. Argyll & Bute Councillor Roddy McCuish was delighted with the confirmation of a new event for the town. “There are very few locations on the West Coast that have the infrastructure for an event of this size and the potential for it to grow. Skerryvore’s Decade event proved that it was possible in Oban and we are delighted that they are committed to helping build on that initial success. There are tremendous opportunities and possibilities to develop OBAN LIVE to be a continuing success with fringe events and incorporating all the aspects of the economic benefits for the area especially with the expertly chosen dates”
Said Skerryvore fiddler Craig Espie, “Oban as a town and community were incredible hosts and supporters of Decade. The amount of people that travelled from all over the world could not speak Daniel Gillespie, Skerryvore band highly enough of Oban and the people of member and director of Decade Argyll. Mairearad and Anna have a November UK tour to promote album Two of Scotland’s most revered multiinstrumentalists, Mairearad Green and Anna Massie launch their third album, ‘Best Day’, on a 14date UK Tour this November – taking in venues from London to Drumnadrochit.
The album features many of Mairearad’s new compositions, Bottle Island, Julia & Simon’s and The Red Poppy Reel, and including, for the first time ever, a tune written together, ‘A Lovely Bottle of Botanist’. It would not be an Mairearad and Anna album without a pipes and banjo set on three lively Reels, and on the perhaps more emotional end of the album scale, Anna sings a beautiful take on ‘She Loves Me, (When I Try)’ by Dougie Maclean.

MARY MAY : album : 'This Is What You Are' release date - out now : www.marymayjazzsinger.com/this-is-what-you-are---cd.html ‘This is What You Are’ is the debut album by Scottish jazz singer Mary May. The album is a feel good vocal Jazz CD with an interesting selection of songs by composers such as Barry Manilow and Wayne Shorter. All arrangements are by Bassist Ray Leonard and Mary May. Sales have so far reached as far as Japan, Mexico and US as well in the UK. The official launch of the album will be at the Jazz Bar in Edinburgh on 1 November. The album features Eddie McGovern (trombone), Craig Dawson (Alto sax), Alan Haggart (Flugelhorn, trumpet), Alan King (piano, Hammond organ, fender Rhodes), Colin Black (guitar), Ray Leonard (acoustic and electric bass) and Mary May on vocals. The album has 12 tracks, half of which feature horn section and half which are pared back quintet arrangements. The sound has been described as ‘Gregory Porter meets Peggy Lee’. The album has had some excellent reviews including a 4 -star review on ‘All About Jazz’ "It’s Jazz to the Bone!" Mary started singing on the club scene aged 17, but when she first heard jazz in her early twenties, it was like coming home. She heard a recording of Sarah Vaughan singing ‘If I Loved

you’ in a way she had never heard anyone sing before. From then onwards Mary sought out all the recordings of Jazz singers she could find and each new discovery was like a whole new world. The singers who influenced Mary most in the early years were Anita O’Day, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan, and Marion Montgomery. At the time she was studying for a degree in Fine Art and felt jazz improvisation was very close in spirit to the abstract paintings she was creating. Mary was interested in spaces between objects, using colour as accents, taking a line for a walk … all of these correlated to the Jazz improvisation Mary love to listen to. After recording a demo CD with pianist Paul Harrison Mary was offered her first gig at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen. Before that gig took place, she was offered a gig at the Glasgow International Jazz Festival and from then on, Mary has been touring the circuit of jazz clubs and venues across Scotland and has steadily gained a wide following.

Shattered Echoes
In Praha
July Moon
Foxbeef: Powerful, melodic, hard rock with grunge sensibilities. Foxbeef released their début album Shattered Echoes on the 27 June, 2015. The drums were recorded at TPot Studios in Kinross with Robin Wynn Evans, whose credits include The Manic Street Preachers & The View. The band took on the responsibility to record and produce the rest of the album themselves, working as hard as they could over the course of a year to get the album to a place that reflected the bands personality and energy.
Paul Mellon (Guitars): This is our second single of our debut EP which we aim to release this autumn. In Praha is a song about 2 people falling in love in Prague. The main riff was inspired by Here Comes Your Man by Pixies and the solo is my own very poor imitation of / homage to Nels Cline's solo in Impossible Germany by Wilco. Some have called it catchy.
July Moon is the second studio album from singersongwriter Alistair Ogilvy - a strong collection of selfpenned material released on his own label and recorded at CHEM19 studios. Alistair was determined to push some genre boundaries while focusing on varying themes of love and loss, poetry and nostalgia. Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow produced the album and it also features Karen Mathieson from Capercaillie on guest vocals. This new release is sure to gain him new admirers and open up exciting opportunities.

TIM DALLING
Even Song
EAS
Eve's Bonie Squad
Electric guitarist, re-imagining jazz, folk, rock and choral music. Born in London, Steve Garrett has lived and traveled across the UK, Antartica, Canada and California, and now calls Scotland home. His music springs from a lifetime of influences from diverse sources and performances. Even Song include songs of loss, longing, inspiration by landscape, resolution and hope. The reflective mood mirrors the fading light at the end of the day. Composers range from the 16th Century through folk and the 1980s to contemporary European jazz, with some original compositions. Arrangements bring out the full resonance of the guitar, sometimes backed by loops recorded in real time.
It is never easy for a son to follow in the footsteps of a famous father, so Iain Jnr chose not to. He gave up the world of solo piping and went on his own musical journey. But what he was taught in his formative years is deep within him and this album is a definite attempt at some kind of filtering of the music of his hinterland. There is also a story present, sometimes a rocky one, of a father and son's relationship formed through a rich tradition and an art form that is deeply important to their culture and to both of them personally. There is a mixture of all these elements in this album and Iain Morrison is an artist who is following his own path, wherever that may take him.
Tim is a song-writer and performer who has been described as a cross between Ivor Cutler and Randy Newman. And now that The New Rope String Band is calling it a day Tim is ready for a new solo career. This album is a collection of songs that celebrate a joyful and urgent humanity recorder with guitarist Ian Carr and bassist Neil Harland. Audiences are once again warming to a man with a very special gift who entertains with a passion, superlative musicianship - and humour.

Skyline are a Scottish band from Edinburgh looking to revolutionize the musical boundaries that lie in place today. We are searching for the balance between electronic music and live music to change musical opinions. We adopt melodic undertones to inflict emotion but will always embrace elements of contemporary music.
Glasgow sextet James Edwyn & The Borrowed Band were formed in 2013 and soon established a cult following that set up a ripple effect carrying their name far and wide. Their music is a mix of alt country and folky rock roots orientated Americana. They showcased at the 2014 Celtic Connections and realised they had enough material to start putting their debut album 'The Tower' together. Recorded in Scotland an additional session was recorded at Smecky studios in Prague where the strings for the track 'The Last Waltz' were played by the world renowned Prague Philharmonic Listen/Watch: Orchestra. Roddy Hart also guest vocals on the track.

DON'T SHOOT
SPRING BREAK
Tied to the Moon
The Wonderkid
Departure Lounge
Tied To The Moon was conceived in an apartment above a pottery studio deep in the sticks of Nova Scotia where Rachel had four days of complete stillness with no means to communicate with the outside world - during silent afternoons of coffee and pistachios, Rachel would sit, in total solitude; writing; reading; playing music. In the space of these four days she unintentionally wrote six songs - four that would later become the core of Tied To The Moon: ‘Tractor’, ‘This Love’, ‘Banks Are Broken’ and ‘Old Lady's Lament’.
"This EP should come with a warning, one listen to this and you'll be hooked" - Michael Chapman Chordblossom. “For a band who are both relatively new and irritatingly young, it’s impressive this track (Panic) is very much the finished product. Catchy, welcoming and flawlessly presented, they’re ready for a big step forward.”- BBC Across The Line. Don't Shoot entered Glasgow's 'Soundwave Music Competition' and after storming through the heats, they played the final at Glasgow's O2 ABC on the 10th of January 2015 and were announced winners that very night.
