Born To Be Wide to host 'Creating The Perfect Music City' Seminar Born To Be Wide next takes place on Thursday 5 November and begins with an interview with veteran promoter Pete Irvine at Edinburgh’s Electric Circus. The co-founder of Regular Music, Unique Events and author of the Scotland The Best guidebook, will be in conversation with Olaf Furniss and will also participate in a panel discussion imagining the perfect music city. With a focus on the capital, it will explore ideas about how to build and nurture artistic and business talent, and will draw on recent reports by the Music Venue Trust and the University of Edinburgh. The latter found that live music contributed £40m to the city’s economy, and its gig goers attend more than twice as many shows as the Scottish average. Its co-author, Adam Behr, will also take part in the panel with additional speakers from different musical sectors including Honeyblood’s Stina Tweeddale and Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust director, Ali Bowden.

Honeyblood’s Stina Tweeddale joins the BTBW panel : www.facebook.com/honeybloodeatitup

“Stina and Ali will bring valuable perspectives and make a great contribution to the discussion,” says Born To Be Wide founder Olaf Furniss, adding that through playing in hundreds locations around the world, Tweeddale is well-placed to give examples of successful models. In addition, Bowden brings a unique insight into what factors have enabled another creative genre to thrive and how challenges faced by the literary community, were overcome. “For the past year Edinburgh’s live community has been looking at how to overcome the obstacles it faces and this discussion will go a stage further and look at what would constitute the perfect environment for music, and music businesses, to flourish,” continued Olaf. “For four decades Pete has been a pioneer in the city’s music scene, so expect great stories and fantastic insights to complement those of Adam and the other panelists.”

Hidden In The Highlands: The Lair Of The Lion Tamer A song sung at a Perth music festival has led Edinburgh based singer-songwriter Dean Owens to make a poignant pilgrimage to an Inverness cemetery, to see for the first time the last resting place of his great great grandfather – the lair of the lion tamer. Dean Owens wrote “Dora” – a track from his latest Nashville-recorded album “Into the Sea” - about his grandmother, Dora Salvona Owens, who grew up in a family circus in Scotland. He told the audience at Perth’s Southern Fried Festival, research into his family tree had revealed his great great grandfather Ambrose Salvona, who founded the circus, was a lion tamer and was buried somewhere in the Highlands. Ambrose was thought to have come to this country from Italy in the company of a dancing bear, sometime in the late 19th century. The song refers to: “Somewhere way back there’s a lion tamer/ Ambrose and his dancing bear/He’s buried in the Highlands/but we’re not sure where.”

reckoned Ambrose was buried in Inverness, so I offered to see if I could track him down.” On her return to Inverness, Judi told the story to some of her colleagues at the Highland Archive and Registration Centre (HARC), on the banks of the River Ness. “They were really excited about the idea of finding Ambrose, and they offered to see what they could find out.” And, sure enough, the team soon discovered the lion tamer’s lair. Ambrose Salvona is buried in Tomnahurich Cemetery, a huge and beautiful burial ground not far from the river, sometimes known as “the Hill of the Fairies”. The inscription on his tombstone simply reads “In Loving Memory of Ambrose Salvona. Lion Tamer. Died at Inverness 13th October 1917. Aged 88 years.” And so enthused were the HARC team that they set out to find out more about the mysterious lion tamer. And, in scenes reminiscent of BBC television’s “Who Do You Think You Are”, they came up with a lot more information on the mysterious lion tamer. “It was great fun investigating Ambrose’s story,” says family historian Anne Fraser. “He turns out to have been a very colourful character – which may not be a surprise – but we have also finished up raising as many questions as we’ve answered.”

What the team have established is that Ambrose was married twice, Now he knows – and a hundred year the father of at least ten children: old mystery has been solved. that he was already around eighty Among Dean’s audience in Perth when he came to Inverness, which was a senior cultural manager with would have been a major journey High Life Highland, Judi Menabney, even for a young man, back then: whose organisation is responsible – and that he seems to have been a among other things - for archives, much loved character even in the registration and family history in time he spent in his new community Inverness. At the end of his life, it’s now known he was admitted to the geriatric hospital facilities in what was then Inverness Poor House – it subsequently became Hilton Hospital and is now a block of residential flats - and died there, a few days later. A procession across the town took him to his final resting place, according to the death notice published in a local newspaper. He was “buried by friends”, according to cemetery records, in a prominent position at Tomnahurich. But the questions remain. No explanation’s been found for why he travelled to the north in the first place. It’s not clear who the friends were who undertook the costs of his final burial. And, according to various records, he was said to have been born in London or France, though family traditions insist he came to this country from Parma in Italy.

I’m very grateful to Judi, Anne and their colleagues for all the work they’ve put into discovering his story,” he says. “I’m delighted they want to use it and my song Dora – which started the search – in their own presentations.” “You really don’t know what’s up there, way up in the family tree. And maybe there’s another song in that “.

Founder/director Tommy Smith has been credited with meticulous attention to technical detail when it comes to recreating, if not enhancing, historic orchestral jazz. Glenn Miller’s career was astoundingly successful, not least because he achieved so much in the course of a tragically short life. In 1939, Time magazine noted: "Of the twelve to twenty four discs in each of today's 300,000 U.S. jukeboxes, from two to six are usually Glenn Miller's." Today, those jukebox hits are timeless classics, still loved and treasured by millions. The SNJO will take audiences on a whistle-stop musical tour from Chattanooga to Pennsylvania via Tuxedo Junction stopping just long enough at Kalamazoo for a Moonlight Serenade. All the Miller hits will be visited in inimitable SNJO style, with one or two surprising stops on the way.

Hebrides Ensemble presents James MacMillan's 'Since it was the day of preparation ...................' When Hebrides Ensemble premiered 'Since it was the day of preparation…' in 2012, the response was extraordinary. ‘Wonderfully rich’, wrote The Times; ‘Broad, blazing and stunning’, said The Herald. This November, Hebrides Ensemble brings this remarkable work to two magnificent venues, whose vaulted acoustics create the perfect reflective backdrop for MacMillan’s rich and intricate score. Written as a ‘postscript’ to his St John Passion, Since it was the day of preparation… explores the biggest mystery in the greatest story ever told – Christ’s Resurrection. With just five instrumentalists and five singers, MacMillan’s scoring is as intimate as the story itself, one that is a tale of despair and sacrifice, but also ultimately of celebration. At times plaintive and lyrical, at others reaching into the far corners of tonality, this is a masterpiece of musical storytelling, finding a very human story in something divine.

CHRISTINE BOVILL : EP : 'The Sentence That I Serve' release date - out now : www.christinebovill.com

The passion of a torch singer has to be combined with jazz finesse and the raw emotion of the blues to sit alongside the best voices of the 20th century. Christine Bovill has, in replacing the grey Glasgow of her youth with the vibrant colours of old record sleeves and the world they transport her to, tapped into that most vital seam of popular music. With this collection of self-penned songs on The Sentence That I Serve she presents an album of dramatic, forward thinking vintage pop that breaks convention by starting and ending a journey through 20th Century music in the present day. Tear stained, sleepless ballads sit alongside infectious New Orleans R&B grooves and wistful, folky vignettes all bound together by her heart stopping voice. With each song she effortlessly moves through the sounds of Paris and New York of the 30's and 40's via 50's Nashville and 60's Memphis before returning to the musical melting pot of her hometown of Glasgow.

Produced and arranged with the expertise of The Strange Blue Dreams, Scotland's finest roots rock house band, the album perfectly distils a wide array of musical influences into a cohesive sound. United by a shared love of Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf, The Everlys, Orbison, The Ink Spots

and Leonard Cohen the band's arrangements provide a dramatic and sympathetic frame for Bovill's vocals. Both band and singer have spent years immersed in old blues, jazz, soul and country music and bring a naturally confident, risk taking flair that breathes new life into vintage pop forms. Years of working nights in smoky jazz clubs and days spent teaching in the city's tough south side high schools brings a gravitas and assurance to her musical personality. As her reputation grew she had to make a choice between her love of singing and the security of being a teacher. A flurry of 5 star reviews no doubt aided that difficult decision and shortly after her first album was released to considerable regional acclaim and airplay. Christine Bovill debuted her second long playing record The Sentence That I Serve at The Famous Spiegel Tent at this year's Edinburgh Festival in August, then St James Theatre in London and finally Cottiers Theatre in Glasgow.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO SCOTTISH FOLK : album Release date - out now : www.arcmusic.co.uk

The Ultimate Guide to Scottish Folk will be released worldwide through ARC Music on October 30th 2015. A double disc epic containing 36 tracks and just over twoand- a-half hours of music. The Ultimate Guide to Scottish Folk follows on the heels of the success of The Ultimate Guide to Irish Folk with liner notes by one of Ireland’s most respected folk music critics, John O’Regan. ARC Music started The Ultimate Guide compilations back in 2013 with the critically acclaimed The Ultimate Guide to Spanish Folk, and then went onto release The Ultimate Guide to Irish Folk (2014) which won the LiveIreland Best Compendium Award 2015. Compiling The Ultimate Guide to Scottish Folk took a great deal of attention, care and thought. Two mighty discs ful lling a bold challenge which was originally conceived by ARC Music Director, Julia Beyer, as she says in her

words: ‘I wanted to show the evolution, development and influence of folk music throughout the world by showcasing a cross section of highly talented artists, whether known or unknown, old or new, and give people a more in depth understanding of how a particular country’s traditions in folk music have evolved and grown.’

Ultimate Guide and write the liner notes for the album, but not without acknowledging the enormity of the task at hand.

And what can we expect of Mary Ann Kennedy’s liner notes? Rich, intelligent, intimate and eloquent. The music on The Ultimate Guide to Scottish Folk is played by both- renowned and remote Award-winning musician, BBC Radio musicians, from known places to presenter, writer, producer and faraway shores, but nonetheless teacher Mary Ann Kennedy accepted each one contributing a unique Julia’s challenge to co-compile The thread to the tapestry of-Scottish

folk with explanations that will leave-a thirst only to be quenched by playing the track. In Julia Beyer’s own words: ‘I wanted to work with a person who was not only highly knowledgable in the - eld but who had a similar vision for this project as I did, which is not necessarily about what’s popular or charting but what will help build the essence of a great compilation, with many turns and surprises along the way! Mary Ann was simply the ultimate lady for the job.’ Mary Ann Kennedy makes a special note as regards former teacher of women’s rights worker – Karine Polwart’s ‘unabashed rhyming of gigantic and Atlantic’ with her engaging self-penned I’m Gonna Do It All, akin to the aim of the The Ultimate Guide to Scottish Folk, a compendium that clearly does include it all with liner notes by the ‘ultimate lady for the job’.

Shattered Echoes

In Praha

‘Newly minted psychedelic’ band from Glasgow have their debut self-titled EP released on infamous student run record label Electric Honey. Brothers Kris and Pete have encapsulated all that is great about psychedelic, garage, rock and pop music into this record. A perfectly balanced EP.

Foxbeef: Powerful, melodic, hard rock with grunge sensibilities. Foxbeef released their début album Shattered Echoes on the 27 June, 2015. The drums were recorded at TPot Studios in Kinross with Robin Wynn Evans, whose credits include The Manic Street Preachers & The View. The band took on the responsibility to record and produce the rest of the album themselves, working as hard as they could over the course of a year to get the album to a place that reflected the bands personality and energy.

Paul Mellon (Guitars): This is our second single of our debut EP which we aim to release this autumn. In Praha is a song about 2 people falling in love in Prague. The main riff was inspired by Here Comes Your Man by Pixies and the solo is my own very poor imitation of / homage to Nels Cline's solo in Impossible Germany by Wilco. Some have called it catchy.

STEVE GARRETT

IAIN MORRISON

July Moon

Even Song

EAS

July Moon is the second studio album from singersongwriter Alistair Ogilvy - a strong collection of selfpenned material released on his own label and recorded at CHEM19 studios. Alistair was determined to push some genre boundaries while focusing on varying themes of love and loss, poetry and nostalgia. Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow produced the album and it also features Karen Mathieson from Capercaillie on guest vocals. This new release is sure to gain him new admirers and open up exciting opportunities.

Electric guitarist, re-imagining jazz, folk, rock and choral music. Born in London, Steve Garrett has lived and traveled across the UK, Antartica, Canada and California, and now calls Scotland home. His music springs from a lifetime of influences from diverse sources and performances. Even Song include songs of loss, longing, inspiration by landscape, resolution and hope. The reflective mood mirrors the fading light at the end of the day. Composers range from the 16th Century through folk and the 1980s to contemporary European jazz, with some original compositions. Arrangements bring out the full resonance of the guitar, sometimes backed by loops recorded in real time.

It is never easy for a son to follow in the footsteps of a famous father, so Iain Jnr chose not to. He gave up the world of solo piping and went on his own musical journey. But what he was taught in his formative years is deep within him and this album is a definite attempt at some kind of filtering of the music of his hinterland. There is also a story present, sometimes a rocky one, of a father and son's relationship formed through a rich tradition and an art form that is deeply important to their culture and to both of them personally. There is a mixture of all these elements in this album and Iain Morrison is an artist who is following his own path, wherever that may take him.

“Originally based on a loose concept of merging post-punk New York with postpunk Manchester, The Cathode Ray swiftly added sixties garage, soundtracks, glam, northern soul, disco and psyche to their sound-palette for their eponymous 2012 debut album - fully blossoming with added electro, shoegaze and prog for this year’s Infinite Variety.” Listen/Watch:

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download URVANOVIC

RACHEL SERMANNI

DON'T SHOOT

Amateurs

Tied to the Moon

The Wonderkid

The debut album from Edinburgh’s orchestral noise-pop collective, 'Amateurs’ is a spectacular amalgamation of live and programmable instrumentation that creates an overwhelmingly powerful sound. “Pure, simplistic and beautiful” - Artrocker "It’s the kind of music that makes me want to type all day in an attempt to describe its beauty” - The 405 “Urvanovic have managed to create a sound that is both complex and enchanting” The Vinyl District

Tied To The Moon was conceived in an apartment above a pottery studio deep in the sticks of Nova Scotia where Rachel had four days of complete stillness with no means to communicate with the outside world - during silent afternoons of coffee and pistachios, Rachel would sit, in total solitude; writing; reading; playing music. In the space of these four days she unintentionally wrote six songs - four that would later become the core of Tied To The Moon: ‘Tractor’, ‘This Love’, ‘Banks Are Broken’ and ‘Old Lady's Lament’.

"This EP should come with a warning, one listen to this and you'll be hooked" - Michael Chapman Chordblossom. “For a band who are both relatively new and irritatingly young, it’s impressive this track (Panic) is very much the finished product. Catchy, welcoming and flawlessly presented, they’re ready for a big step forward.”- BBC Across The Line. Don't Shoot entered Glasgow's 'Soundwave Music Competition' and after storming through the heats, they played the final at Glasgow's O2 ABC on the 10th of January 2015 and were announced winners that very night.

Two Sides

Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Album : cd / download Release Date: 1 May

Fragmentality is the eagerly-awaited debut album from Becci Wallace. The album showcases an artful blend of genres, blurring the boundaries between folk, pop, trip hop, jazz and blues. The album follows the journey of an escapist, yearning for beauty from the unknown, the untravelled, and inevitably the route back to where she started.

Eagerly awaited debut album, produced by the legendary John McSherry (At First Light, Lunasa, Tamalin) and Donal O’Connor (At First Light), it contains an eclectic mix of tunes and songs. There is a fine collection of musicians performing on the album including John McSherry, Donal O’Connor, Ross Martin (Daimh), David Foley (Rura) and Pauline Scanlon (Lumiere). Tunes from Ireland and Scotland (both traditional and contemporary), self-penned tunes, as well as songs and tunes that Susan collected on her travels in Sweden, can be expected.
