Glasgow To Host World’s First Music Tourism Convention
#musicsummit
Glasgow is set to host the world’s first international music tourism convention, bringing together the diverse range of businesses in both sectors and establishing a forum for closer collaboration. Taking place on 18-19 November, The Music Tourist Convention will feature presentations, workshops and networking activities, devised to be relevant to private and public enterprises of all sizes. Confirmed speakers include Debbie McWilliams (SECC incl. The SSE Hydro), Johannes Everke (Hamburg Marketing), Robert Holan (Nordic Choice Hotels) and Julia Jones, whose Found In Music agency has developed numerous partnerships between entertainment and hospitality businesses. “The opportunities for cooperation between the music and tourism sectors are almost limitless, but what has been missing is an event to bring them together. We are delighted to be hosting it in the UK’s first UNESCO City Of Music,” explains the convention’s creator Olaf Furniss, who is also behind Scotland’s award-winning music business conference, Wide Days. “Our goal is for Music Tourist to provide an ongoing forum for exchanging ideas.” The first day of the event features a series of presentations and workshops at Glasgow’s Drygate Brewery, delivered by speakers working across both sectors. These include talks by Robert Holan, the manager of an Oslo hotel with its own recording studio, as well as Hamburg Marketing’s Johannes Everke, who has been instrumental in developing a strategy which places music at the core of his city’s destination marketing. An evening reception will followed the conference on day one, while Saturday’s activities are focused on developing ties among delegates and speakers, as well as providing a showcase for local acts, businesses and attractions. They begin with Glasgow Music City Tours guiding participants to key locations including The SSE Hydro, which became the world’s second busiest music arena within 18 months of opening in 2013. Accreditation for the event costs £200 for both days and £190 for the conference and reception.
Music Tourist founder, Olaf Furniss, is behind the award-winning Wide Days conference and showcase event, which won the Best Networking Event 2014 at the Yearly Music Convention Awards. He has extensive experience working for some of Europe’s largest music industry events, has been a member of the Scottish Tourist Guides Association since 1995 and as a journalist has reported from a range of exotic locations and events for the BBC, The Guardian, The Scotsman and the Press & Journal.

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra directed by Tommy Smith presents
The Legend of Charlie Parker The Northern Lights of Aberdeen will glow just little brighter this autumn, when the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) brings a programme of scorching jazz to The Sanctuary at Queens Cross Church. This wonderfully intimate venue is noted for its rich and warm acoustic qualities, and is ideally suited to the life-affirming music of a jazz giant, the inimitable Charlie Parker. Aberdeen will host the world première of the SNJO's newly commissioned big band arrangements Charlie Parker is one of the most important figures in the history of jazz music, and one of its most tragic heroes. He is also one of a handful of twentieth century musicians who was an authentic catalyst for far-reaching change. The SNJO delves into the Parker catalogue and brings his brilliant vision to pulsating life in a concert that will make this November one to remember. All of Charlie Parker’s original invention is explored, with further refinements in new arrangements specially commissioned by the SNJO. There are new charts from Julian Argüelles, Sean Gibbs and Bill Dobbins, and original thinking from familiar SNJO arrangers Martin Kershaw, Florian Ross, Christian Elsässer, Laurence Cottle and Geoffrey Keezer. Their work allows the SNJO to re-visit Parker classics such as Donna Lee, Cheryl, Yardbird Suite, Parker’s Mood and Anthropology, and gild them with renewed vitality, fresh ideas and the gleam of modernity. Charlie Parker indisputably came up with the initial musical concept that became ‘bebop’; a

CalMac at home on the sea – with Skipinnish for unique film In an innovative film exploring its enduring role at the heart of Scotland’s west coast, CalMac has launched its 'Your West Coast' campaign – a collaboration with west coast band Skipinnish.
Skipinnish :: www.skipinnish.com
At three-and-a-half minutes long, the video incorporates imagery from the 1944 David MacBrayne film Islands of Youth and other new CalMac footage physically projected onto the west coast landscape. It highlights both a modern sea change for the iconic Scottish ferry company, as well as the reassuring and enduring stability born of 165 years’ service. The lyrics that soundtrack the video echo the images on screen. “See the wash roll off the bow, and caress familiar colour, her black and white of beauty, as red lions proudly guard her”, sings Skipinnish’s Norrie MacIver, poetically describing CalMac’s distinctive livery. Skipinnish’s Angus Macphail is pleased with how the film turned out: “Skipinnish have so many good memories of CalMac journeys over the years and the feeling of getting on the ferry still makes me excited. I hope our positive feelings towards the ferries, the shore staff, and the crew come across in the song. The video really captures the magic of CalMac and the West Coast of Scotland – it makes me want to jump on a ferry and head for the Hebrides!” The film and a collection of vignette videos captured throughout the summer at events like Best of the West Festival and Iona Music Festival are available on CalMac’s website at www.calmac.co.uk/your-west-coast and on the YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/ GvS_qhhjnuA The track is available to download from iTunes now @ http://apple.co/2esA6lR A Gaelic version of the song has also been written. It is hoped that 'Your West Coast' will also inspire islanders and travellers alike to share their memories and stories about what Scotland’s western seaboard means to them, creating a unique record of first-hand accounts and tales captured in the individual voices of those who rely on these much-loved ferries – whether travelling fleetingly or regularly, from the Clyde to the Hebrides. High-powered projectors beamed images on to an incredible array of subjects from entire mountains, ancient castles and a cathedral, to rowing boats, harbours and a bothy. Each projection was recorded using timelapse cameras and the film was created from this

footage. In the film, massive scale projections of campers roasting marshmallows light up the side of Duart Castle on Mull and the full height of Ardnamurchan Lighthouse suddenly transforms in to a highlander dancing a fling while Mingary Castle flickers with images of surfers running towards the waves. Barrels are pounded into shape on the elevation of Castle Stalker, a CalMac ferry dances with the tides in Oban Harbour and grainy footage of a woman casting a line shimmers on a rocky outcrop at Burg on Mull, while the company’s MV Loch Seaforth glides across the world-famous walls of Dunvegan Castle on Skye. Footage captured on Islay, Cumbrae and Eigg also features. “We are a progressive, modern company,” said CalMac’s Managing Director Martin Dorchester. “But we are also proud of our heritage and this film combines old and new seamlessly as we look ahead with great pride to the future. The state-of-the-art projection technology captures much of the essence of Scotland’s western islands and Highlands, as those who live there go about their daily lives. CalMac is part of those lives – past, present and future." Memories and tales of Scotland’s west coast can be shared by joining the conversation on social media, tag @CalMacFerries and use the hashtag #YourWestCoast – they can be about observations or experiences, funny or serious, happy or sad, past or present, or even about hopes for the future. They can be about the ferries themselves, towns or villages, islands or mainland, sea or shore, people or places. CalMac is hoping that what moves these contributors to share their thoughts will also inspire others to add to the collection. www.facebook.com/Skipinnish www.calmac.co.uk/your-west-coast

This month the RSNO began its second season 125th anniversary celebrations and continues its commitment to supporting new music with the performances of newly-commissioned and cocommissioned works including those by former Composers' Hub composer Jay Capperauld, as well as newly written works by Oliver Searle, Sally Beamish, Martin Suckling and Gerald Barry.

The five composers will spend the 2016:17 Season with the RSNO and during their term each composer will write a ten-minute work for full symphony orchestra. The scheme will culminate in a public workshop in the RSNO Centre’s New Auditorium in Glasgow in April 2017, conducted by RSNO Assistant Conductor Holly Mathieson and led by internationallyrenowned composer Julian Anderson, from which one work will be chosen to be performed by the RSNO as part of its 2017:18 Season. In January 2017, and in partnership with Celtic Connections, the participants will also attend a composition workshop, each write a three-minute work using a traditional folk tune, provided by Celtic Connections, as inspiration. RSNO Composers’ Hub is also an opportunity to develop a meaningful collaboration with the RSNO and the other hub members over a sustained period and to get to know the Orchestra, staff and its audience, receiving guidance from different artistic and business areas. RSNO Executive Producer Manus Carey: “With the inaugural year of Composers’ Hub proving such a success it is with great pleasure

Angus Roderick Grant : musician and inspiration 14 February 1967 - 9 October 2016 “One love … and please remember, be kind to strangers”
Scotland and the world's music community have been shocked by the news that the much loved 'Angus' from Shooglenifty died recently. The MUSIC NEWS Scotland team join with musicians of all genres in passing our deepest condolences to his Shoogle family and all others that knew and treasured him. Below we have an appreciation of Angus by Shooglenifty's manager Jane-Ann Purdy. Angus first picked up a fiddle at five years old. He was given a quarter sized instrument by his uncle and the family were amazed when in just few days he had three tunes on the go. Perhaps they shouldn’t have been so surprised. As the son of the renowned left-handed fiddle player and teacher from Lochaber – Aonghas Grant – his destiny was to follow in his father’s footsteps.
the wake of his old school friend James Mackintosh, and James’s sister Fiona (both Art College students). Encountering other players in the capital opened his eyes to other musical possibilities, and he persuaded James to take their music to the streets during the Edinburgh Festival in that first summer. As James headed back to college he left with his fiddle for a busking tour of Europe. In that trip he visited Vigo in Spain which inspired one of his most famous tunes Two Fifty to Vigo. On his return Angus joined James and Fiona’s boyfriend Malcolm Crosbie in experimental punk bluegrass combo Swamptrash. Also in the line up were Orcadian banjo player Garry Finlayson and bassist Conrad Molleson.

HEATHER DICKSON :: single :: 'Harley Honey' release date - 22 October @ www.heatherdickson.co.uk The long-awaited new sound from Heather Dickson is due for release on 22 October 2016. Dunfermline's Heather Dickson is delighted to announce the first single Harley Honey from her stunning new EP, which was produced in Nashville.
Getting behind the mic and singing my heart out with such distinguished musicians was the best musical experience an artist can hope for. I had to pinch myself as I sang every word.
Songstress Heather was thrilled to travel to the heart of country music to record her latest material which she self funded. Having previously recorded softer country material, this time Heather is back with an edgier sound and a brand new image in a bid to finally take her place in the music charts. Wanting only the best for this song, she was able to have some of Nashville’s finest musicians play on it.
I soaked it all in like a sponge and the whole vibe made me raise my game. I genuinely sang my socks off. Being in Nashville felt like coming home. My heart and soul will forever be in rock and roll” Heather Dickson Now she hopes to share her passion and her edgy rock/country sound with her growing army of fans in the UK and around the world.
Heather said:
Harley Honey is available from www.cdbaby.com and to download on Amazon and iTunes from 22 October 2016.

The Poets and the Beats is the new album from singer/ songwriter Paul Armour. Says Paul: "This album is very much a beat combo sound. Songs based with grooves using retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, punchy melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically the style is quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described my sound as "Weller-ish" but more refined! It's all in the ear of the beholder. This Girl, This Woman is the debut album by 57-yearold singer Jude Adams, who discovered her talent following a life-changing M.E. diagnosis. The album, which Jude describes as soulful pop with a 60s twist, contains 10 tracks all written and sung by Jude, and produced and arranged by musician Janette Mason. Jude comments: " I always loved to sing, and I always did, but behind closed doors. It was only when I got to 50 that I summoned the courage to start singing in public. And then two years later I was diagnosed with M.E. Performing, work and many ways in which I lived my life had to stop or change significantly. It was debilitating, but led to a lot of personal reflection, and ultimately the silver lining of discovering a passion for songwriting." Although influences of country, soul and pop all join together in Down to the River, Angela’s island roots are never far beneath the surface. John Saich, former Capercaillie bass player and guitarist, and Wild Biscuit co-producer Mags Russell have created multi-layered arrangements on tracks such as Don’t Say Hi, Yesteryear and the title track Down to the River reminiscent of many of the classic singer-songwriter albums; on others such as Wax Doll and Closing Doors a contemporary acoustic approach puts the emotion up close and in the moment. Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. David Altair has just released his 6th album entitled ‘B-Sides’. This is some work that was previously never released and is quite rare. The album has quite a psychedelic feel to it especially ‘we can’t stop now (the Wall)’. The album flows into a journey of ambient sounds and experimentation.
Ashton Lane are part of a new wave of homegrown modern country music originating in the UK and are sure to expand their growing fan base this year. The single One Kiss Later is out on 29 February 2016 Ashton Lane consist of Esther O’Connor and Tim O’Connor. The band performs as a duo but at times as a three piece when Graeme Duffin (Wet Wet Wet) joins them as guest guitarist. The band has a romantic back story, being husband and wife and also come from fine musical stock. Esther O’Connor’s musical heritage however spans right back to her childhood. She remembers being out on tour at only five years of age with Elton John on his US tour accompanying her Dad’s band Wet Wet Wet.

Falkirk Live!
Ullapool Guitar Festival
Falkirk 14-16 October
