DEAN OWENS :: album :: 'Into The Sea - Deluxe' release date - 29 September @ www.drumfirerecords.com/shop.html

Scottish singer/songwriter Dean Owens has made a habit of doing his own thing. This troubadour’s unique blend of Celtic Americana is grounded in the idea of “home” while forever keeping a wandering eye on the road. Six solo albums in - following three with his previous outfit The Felsons - Dean is still taking new turns, both sonically and as a songwriter, and Into the Sea is no exception. It is a deeply personal record that enjoys moments of heartache, loss and longing, but flecked with hope and joy. Dean sketches out moments in lives - both real and imagined - and finds a truth and warmth that few songwriters can even aspire to.

The reaction to its release in 2015 was extremely enthusiastic, with the best reviews of his career, cross-genre airplay on a wide range of radio shows, and inclusion in many “Best of…” 2015 lists including a #5 listing on the Sunday Herald’s Top 50 Albums. The new Deluxe edition includes 4 extra tracks – Alison Wonderland (recorded with Neilson as part of the Into the Sea sessions), 2 acoustic tracks - Forgotten Shadows (co-written with Hubbard) and a poignant Warren Zevon cover Keep Me In Your Heart – also recorded in Nashville but in a separate session (with Brian Carter). Cotton Snow, Dean’s most recent single release – is a moody, swampy groove, with shimmering guitars and Dean’s trademark searingly soulful vocal, inspired by the fate of Captain Tod Franklin at the bloody Battle of Franklin in the American Civil War. It was recorded with singersongwriter, guitarist and producer Dave Coleman contributing guitar, percussion and other instrumentation Dean: “In addition to the tracks on the original release I had a bunch of other songs which were recorded around the same time with a couple of Nashville friends, which I liked, but didn’t have the chance to finish. It’s been great to finally do that and share some of them on this Deluxe release” Into the Sea draws inspiration from all corners from a rediscovered old school photograph to the twisting branches of his own family tree, from solitary winter days in the Big Apple to the trenches of World War One. Dean Owens tells vivid stories with beauty and colour. A collection of songs with distinct personalities that are rooted in the streets of Leith, Owens' Scottish hometown, but enjoy an appeal way beyond UK shores. Into the Sea is a record with roots in all senses of the word: musical, geographical, and

familial. It is sweet and sublime, occasionally abrasive and often surprising. Recorded mostly at producer Neilson Hubbard’s Mr Lemons Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, Dean gathered together a roster of razor sharp US players and singers to bring an infectious, swampy groove to his finely honed pop sensibilities. Long term friend and collaborator Will Kimbrough’s presence is felt keenly. A highly rated singer-songwriter in his own right, a producer and also sideman to the likes of Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, Will has played on most of Dean’s solo recordings. The album also enjoys cameos from two incredible female singers: Suzy Bogguss and Kim Richey. This is the third album Dean has recorded in the USA, following on from New York Hummingbird (New York 2011) and is his second album in Nashville, after 2008’s acclaimed Whisky Hearts. Into the Sea is a joyously contradictory record. Dean looks out to the horizon while knowing instinctively where his music was born and raised. It captures the spirit of his breath-taking live performances, be it one man and a guitar or with his six-piece band, The Whisky Hearts. More than being held in rapture by Nashville’s charms, he has embraced all it has to offer to create songs that are fused with a perhaps familiar energy but also a unique musical style

THE STRAY BIRDS :: Scottish tour 9-16 October :: www.thestraybirds.com/shows

The Stray Birds, from Pennsylvania, USA, are widely regarded as one of the hottest acts on the roots music scene. Last time they played in Scotland, they enjoyed sold-out shows thanks to the level of interest that has been created following several wellreceived albums…and a killer show at Celtic Connections where they made their UK debut in 2015. Now, they are all set to return with a string of dates coming up in October as they hit the road

internationally to promote their brand new album, “Magic Fire.” When they released the CD in August, it created a huge impact on both sides of the Atlantic, went straight to the Number 1 position on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart and stormed up the Euro Americana Chart too. In the UK, the Daily Express called it "something really special" while Acoustic magazine predicted it would "blast their music to a wider audience." Americana UK called it “an outstanding third album from one of the best bands out there." Triumphant appearances at events such as MerleFest, Tonder and Cambridge Folk Festival in

the same year, elevated them to a level that had been predicted by legendary BBC presenter Bob Harris when he told listeners to his radio show: “When the next full-length album comes out, we'll see them elevated into a kind of folk/bluegrass superstardom.” At Cambridge Folk Festival, they were declared one of the most outstanding acts of the 2015 event and when Sky Arts filmed them, BBC Radio 2 folk presenter Mark Radcliffe told viewers: “I know you are gonna love them!” The band has recently broadened out their sound and will be touring as a four-piece, having added percussionist Dominic Billett to the line-up. This Girl, This Woman is the debut album by 57-yearold singer Jude Adams, who discovered her talent following a life-changing M.E. diagnosis. The album, which Jude describes as soulful pop with a 60s twist, contains 10 tracks all written and sung by Jude, and produced and arranged by musician Janette Mason. Jude comments: " I always loved to sing, and I always did, but behind closed doors. It was only when I got to 50 that I summoned the courage to start singing in public. And then two years later I was diagnosed with M.E. Performing, work and many ways in which I lived my life had to stop or change significantly. It was debilitating, but led to a lot of personal reflection, and ultimately the silver lining of discovering a passion for songwriting." Stories Untold

Crossing Borders

To Be Free

Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.

‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.

To Be Free is an interim project - in between albums number one and two - for Glasgow's Martha L. Healy. Including two originals and two of Martha's favourite country classics, the EP was recorded with her band over a snowy weekend in Glasgow in January 2016.

The Vivians

The Vivians 10th Anniversary Demos Album #TheVivians10yr - To mark their 10th anniversary of forming, cult indie punk band The Vivians will release a collection of songs spanning their tumultuous career. The self-titled album, digitally released 26th August 2016, will comprise newly mastered unreleased demos and rarities, recorded between 2006 and 2010, accompanied by a new video and artwork. Formed in August 2006, The Vivians dared to dream big and set out to achieve great things. From their humble beginnings in a basement rehearsal room in Edinburgh, through to splitting in April 2010, the band’s story is one of dreams, misguidance and brotherhood.

Wild Things is the first release from East Lothian Alt-Folk singer songwriter Baron Salmon. The four songs are tender tales of moving on, each one showcasing the musicianship, the fine singing and the mature songwriting of their creator. In these songs we also glimpse some of his influences, from Dylan to Bonnie Prince Billy, to Tallest Man on Earth, whilst never losing sight of the exciting new sound that belongs to Baron Salmon.

Oceans are an anthemic alternative rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. Influenced by varied range of acts; 30 Seconds To Mars, Explosions In The Sky, Thrice, and U2, Oceans' sound is a mix of powerful, soulful vocals with sing along choruses to soaring, melodic lead guitar, and rhythm with a punch.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download ALLAN MACDONALD & NEIL JOHNSTONE The Bruce 700

Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. B-Sides

One Kiss Later

David Altair has just released his 6th album entitled ‘B-Sides’. This is some work that was previously never released and is quite rare. The album has quite a psychedelic feel to it especially ‘we can’t stop now (the Wall)’. The album flows into a journey of ambient sounds and experimentation.

Ashton Lane are part of a new wave of homegrown modern country music originating in the UK and are sure to expand their growing fan base this year. The single One Kiss Later is out on 29 February 2016 Ashton Lane consist of Esther O’Connor and Tim O’Connor. The band performs as a duo but at times as a three piece when Graeme Duffin (Wet Wet Wet) joins them as guest guitarist. The band has a romantic back story, being husband and wife and also come from fine musical stock. Esther O’Connor’s musical heritage however spans right back to her childhood. She remembers being out on tour at only five years of age with Elton John on his US tour accompanying her Dad’s band Wet Wet Wet.
