'Woody' flies all the way from New York to perform “favourite song” at couple’s wedding

American roots music star, Woody Pines is one of the most popular touring troubadors and with his band has appeared at many of the UK’s biggest festivals, including Celtic Connections, where they played to 1000 revellers at the city’s Old Fruitmarket venue. But the singer-songwriter whose music has been described as “a rollicking, engagingly idiosyncratic amalgam of old-time blues and jug band sensibilities” who is currently based in Schenectady, New York, made the round-

trip flight this time to keep two of his biggest fans happy. For, Woody will performer their favourite song from one of his albums – “Satisfied” for their first dance at the reception after they are wed in Inverkip. Carole and Ray promised themselves that would be their treat – and something to make their big day even more special. And Woody jetted in to guarantee this extra wedding vow would be met. The Muddy Roots Records star, who also counts legendary BBC Radio 2 presenter Whispering Bob Harris as a fan, said: “I first met them when we played at a local arts centre on the Isle of Mull about six years ago and in subsequent years, they came to more of our gigs in Fife and Edinburgh.

“It was amazing to get the invitation to perform at their wedding. How could I say no to that!” Ray, who is also known to his pals as ‘Bomber’, said: “We both loved the song, Satisfied, and the first CD we bought, and had always said we would want it as our first dance if we ever got married. “Now, the big day has arrived and what's not to love about the artist singing his own song at your own wedding to put the icing on the cake!”

Glasgow Americana ..... Woody’s arrival on these shores provided a happy coincidence for the organisers of this weekend’s Glasgow Americana Festival and when they found out he could be available, they encouraged him to stay on for a few days longer and added a couple of extra shows as an extra attraction.

View all the MNS digital publications from links at www.musicnewsscotland.wordpress.com

Now we’ll have to wait until next July to catch Woody and his band in action when they return for 2019 festivals and tour dates.

THE EVES :: single - 'Tides' release date :: 19 October @ on all digital sites

New Scottish Pop duo The Eves – Caroline Gilmour and Marissa Keltie, release their debut single ‘Tides’ on all digital platforms on 19 October.

Aeroplanes, and is known for her acoustic House Concert performances worldwide – latterly accompanied by Marissa. Marissa’s (stage name Mareesa) video of selfpenned track ‘The Other Side’ has had over 18k views on YouTube. She accompanies Caroline’s solo performances on piano and backing vocals, and is an established lead vocalist and performer at events across Scotland with her session band. Marissa currently models for the world-renowned Model Team agency and has been involved in campaigns for global companies including British Airways, John Lewis, Specsavers and Heineken.

The release falls in the middle of two House Concert dates in Copenhagen where the duo will be performing stripped back acoustic versions of their new music for their Danish following. Both are solo artists who recently joined forces to write a 10 track album due for release Q2 2019. Several tracks are already in progress with producer Mark Morrow (Folda, Vistas, Mt. Doubt). 'Tides' is a song about connection – the sense of familiarity between two strangers; energy pushing them together towards a central purpose. “I feel you washing over me, pulling like an energy” The song is accompanied by a music video (directed by Stuart Breadner), which will be available on YouTube when the single is released. Caroline is a UK No.1 selling songwriter with her

4-track EP ‘Electric Waterfalls’ released in 2016. Not only did it keep Jeff Buckley and PJ Harvey off the top spot in the Vinyl singles chart, it also made an impressive debut in at No.2 in the Physical Singles Chart. Caroline has opened for acts such as Charlotte Church, Horse and Paper

The duo are currently planning live shows for early 2019 prior to their album release. Caroline’s love of Pop music combined with Marissa’s passion for harmony creates songwriting partnership full of catchy melodies and memorable hooks. The result is a nod towards acts such as The Pierces, First Aid Kit and Florence & The Machine.

THE TROPICANAS :: EP - 'A Lovely Coincidence' release date :: 13 October @ www.thetropicanas.bandcamp.com

The Tropicanas started out as a solo project by Andrew R. Burns back in 2013, after a series of messy karaoke styled shows it became apparent that he would need a band back him up if things turned violent or weird.

After this he got on board his bestest mates; Ruaridh 'Congo' Macpherson, Joe 'The shredder' White and Joe 'Snakehips' Murty to form The Tropicanas. Everything from then on out became a group venture and the songs became enhanced sort of like taking a Berocca and a red bull at the same time.

Guitar :: Ruaridh 'Congo' Macpherson on Drums :: Joe 'Snakehips' Murty on Bass and Vocals

The band name came about after hoping for a sponsorship and lifetime supply of a brand of trademarked orange juice, The Tropicanas are still waiting for OJ. The sound of The Tropicanas has been aptly described by The Sun newspaper as “swirling and swaying like someone desperate for love wearing a polyester suit at the edge of the dance-floor.” and a patron at live show also once described them as, “Perry Komo for the Ketamine generation.”

Now in the year of 2018 as the world is falling apart and minimum alcohol pricing comes into effect in Scotland, The Tropicanas Release their EP 'A Lovely Coincidence on the 13 October with a release show at 'The Leith Depot' In Edinburgh.

THE FIRRENES :: album - 'Door Too Wide' release date :: 9 November @ www.TheFirrenes.com

Edinburgh band The Firrenes (rhymes with ‘beans’) have announced the release of their first album on 9 November, entitled Door Too Wide after a stand-out track on the record.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and his follow-up opera Breathe Freely was released in 2015 on the prestigious Linn Records label.

The Firrenes were formed in 2016 by Edinburgh singer-songwriter Jules Reed, who is perhaps better known as the classical and opera composer Julian Wagstaff. Julian’s opera The Turing Test was a sellout hit on the 2007

Jules (aged 48) said: “When a lull in classical and theatre commissions arose a few years ago, I jumped at the chance to put together the band I’d been dreaming of for a decade or more. I have always instinctively known that the

The band’s lineup features Jules Reed on lead guitar and vocals, Walt Cumming on bass guitar and vocals, Tony Greenwood on drums and John Richard on keyboard. Walt is a seasoned player originally from Lanarkshire; Tony played professionally as a studio drummer in London for The album was recorded over two weeks in April many years, while John is a classically trained and June 2018, by Graeme Young at Chamber pianist, originally from Germany and formerly Studio in Edinburgh’s Granton district. frontiers between ‘popular’ and ‘serious’ music are essentially fluid. I think this is clearest when you listen to the crowning achievements of popular music such as the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper and David Bowie’s finest works. I have had the privilege to work in the classical field with many of Scotland’s finest players, and it was wonderful to be able to invite some of them to play on The Firrenes’ album Door Too Wide, along with my old pal Ricky White who I’ve known since my school days in Leith. Ricky joined us on pedal steel via the Internet from Indiana, USA.” The album draws on a broad range of influences, encompassing 70s rock, R&B, burlesque, art rock, blues and classical. The songs are all original compositions, seven by Jules Reed (a.k. a. Julian Wagstaff), three by Walt Cumming, and one by Greg Sanderson, formerly of Edinburgh band Five Day Hemingway. The subject matter ranges from the deeply personal to the highly political, but is always prescient, immediate, considered and aware. The band enjoyed a busy year in 2017, releasing their first single ‘Time and Place’ / ‘Destitution Row’, and playing to a packed house in Berlin, Germany. The band were astonished when none other than Michael Eavis, founder of the Glastonbury Festival, turned up out of the blue at the Edinburgh launch gig for the single. It turned out Eavis was on holiday in Scotland at the time, and the gig had caught his eye.

BREABACH :: album - 'Frenzy of the Night' release date :: 26 October @ www.breabach.com/shop

Frenzy of the Meeting is the latest release from multi awardwinning Scottish folk band Breabach. Continuing to build on the ideas and experimentation from their 2016 album Astar, this new work is explorative and creative. The new release also sees the band take exciting steps towards developing a more expansive sonic landscape. Tracked live by the band over a week in June 2018, their aim was to capture the raw essence of the live energy and musical dynamic they have become so well-known for. More studio time followed, with a focus on experimentation and sonic production, with the final result being their most adventurous album to date. Produced in collaboration with Eamon Doorley

(Julie Fowlis, Danu) and engineered by Iain Hutchison, Frenzy of the Meeting also features stunning original artwork by Somhairle Macdonald. Alongside traditional songs and contemporary tunes there are original compositions from each band member with the material largely themed on todays frenzied experience of global politics, media and the natural world as well as focusing on the positive fevered hive of innovation, creativity and pioneering music within the Glasgow music scene, to where the band belong. The theme is further reflected in the hectic 2 years of global touring post release of Astar. In that time the band have picked up ‘Best Folk Band’ and ‘Best Album’ at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards as well as nominations for ‘Best Group’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and ‘European Album of the Year’ in the Songlines Music Awards.

new ideas, energy and belief is a key attribute of the band and another theme that is strongly conveyed through this new release. Frenzy of the Meeting will premiere live on Breabach’s upcoming UK tour this November.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download JOHN GRAHAM & JIM JACK Sae Will We Yet

LINSEY AITKEN & KEN CAMPBELL Shore To Shore

album / cd / Release Date: out now

album / cd / Release Date: out now

John Graham and Jim Jack’s debut album features an eclectic mix of many of the favourite songs from their live act with contributions from some of the most talented contemporary songwriters from Scotland and further afield. Graeme Miles’ haunting ‘Eldorado’ hints at a life of missed opportunities while Iain Ingram’s ‘Calton Rose’ and ‘Braes o’ Appin’ are love songs in the Scottish tradition and Steven Clark’s ‘Coming Home’ talks of the plight of the many refugees cast adrift in the world today. Jim King’s ‘West Coast Days’ and ‘Home To The Kyles’ from the pen of Duncan McCrone and Celly Paterson evoke memories of summer days on the Clyde Coast. From earlier days of the folk revival come Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’ and Matt McGinn’s enigmatic ‘Magic Shadow Show’. John and Jim’s love of Americana is also represented in the rollicking ‘Truck Driving Man’. John and Jim’s act recalls much of the spirit of the folk clubs in the 60s and 70s with plenty of chorus singing and a fair measure of humour thrown in.

This is our second CD as a duo, with a mixture of new songs and instrumentals, many focussing on our Scottish connections around the world, each with a story, and most of all about people and histories of the past and present. Fortunately, people seem to really like what we do, and ask what kind of music we perform. The answer is not one genre or another, but a blending of everyone and everything we have met along the way. A coming together of both our musical journeys, combined into one together, with elements of our respective musical backgrounds in Celtic, Classical, Traditional, Contemporary Music and all else. But most of all our music is about people, and all those who have influenced us and inspired us along the way.

GUN

We All Share The Same Sky

Time and Place/Destitution Row

Favourite Pleasures

Recorded at Chamber Studio in Edinburgh, this twotrack single captures the songs 'Time and Place' and 'Destitution Row' in new arrangements written especially for this release. The first cut has an earlyseventies, American rock feel and speaks of a special and unique moment in life, while the second number incorporates a horn section and choral backing, reflecting on aspects of life in today's UK.

GUN’s seventh studio album, ‘Favourite Pleasures‘ – out on September 15th – stands proudly alongside the very best of their work. The band will be showcasing tracks from the album in 3 live dates in December. Informed by a back-to-basics approach tempered by an innate sense for melody, the record was made in the band’s own Morse Code studios in Paisley. It’s an album that dances on a knife-edge, one that can turn on a single note from the raw pain of emotions hitting the rocks, to an unbridled celebration of hedonism.

Jon is a relative late-comer to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music, having spent many years cast adrift in the dark and seedy underbelly of rock’n’roll. Jon changed musical direction in 2010 after happening upon a Youtube video of Richard Thompson playing his beautiful and evocative song Beeswing. There has been no looking back ever since! The High Summit

After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.

Paul Anderson from Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is one of Scotland’s finest traditional fiddle players and The High Summit is his third album of self penned music and song. Like The Singing Land and Land of the Standing Stones before it, The High Summit celebrates the history, landscape and people of Paul’s beautiful North-East homeland. Joining Paul on The High Summit are a group of exceptional artists, highly respected in their own right and adding their own touch of magic to the album. Shona Donaldson on vocals (Scots Singer of the Year 2009 and first female winner of the Bothy Ballad Champion of Champions), Tony McManus on guitar (worldrenowned Scottish guitarist now based in Canada), Malcolm Jones on guitar and accordion (Runrig), Ale Carr on Cittern (Dreamer’s Circus), Ali Napier on keyboards (Miami Vince and former member of the Dougie MacLean Band) and James Gorgon on percussion (Albany show band and The Cutting Edge).
