SMIA UPDATES WEBSITE AND ENCOURAGES MEMBERSHIP

The Chair of SMIA Stewart Henderson said: "As the SMIA moves into the final quarter of 2013, I’m more confident than ever that we’re on the road to establishing an organisation of real significance. Of course the long-term measure of that will be whether we’ve built a strong and diverse community of members: a community made up of organisations and individuals, of artists and businesses and with representation across as many genres and sectors as possible. Pulling that off will require the pursuit of our common rather than competing interests and we’ll only unearth those interests by getting together more often and talking." SMIA's sector meeting last month featured record labels and it proved to be a hugely worthwhile and informative exercise attended by Rock Action, Soma, Greentrax, Linn, Olive Grove, Song By Toad, Gerry Loves Records, Armellodie Records, Comets And Cartwheels, A Modern Way and Chemikal

St Boswells : 25 October : www.stboswellslive.com Something new for St Boswells Live! is on the horizon. They have had continued calls for jam sessions and open mics, but the big hall they normally meet in can be a bit scary, especially when there are lots of people watching and even milling about at the end. With this in mind, and with the help of St Boswells Cricket Club, St Boswells Live! are introducing Bread & Jam - as they admit a terrible pun on a simple concept - a great idea that other music clubs and venues in other parts of Scotland might pick up on. To get involved with the first night on Friday 25 October at 8pm just turn up at the Cricket Club (around the back of the Buccleuch Arms Hotel in the centre of St Boswells just an hour from Edinburgh on the A68) with your instrument, voice or just a willingness to listen and enjoy the music. Feel free to bring an amplifier if you need one, but the room is small enough to be acoustic. The club's encouraging people to join in, but if you want to play alone then just say

Previous sector meetings have included retailers and artist management and SMIA will be hosting more in the coming months, looking for contributions and attendance from local and national government, enterprise agencies, Creative Scotland and other key industry organisations. ‘Chemistry Opera’ weaves wartime tale Edinburgh : 24 October : www.chemistryopera.co.uk

Breathe Freely tickets are available now from this link: http://bit.ly/1fdkXkc

Scottish composer Julian Wagstaff has announced the première of a new forty-minute opera for three singers and three musicians. Entitled Breathe Freely, the piece has been commissioned by the University of Edinburgh to celebrate the Tercentenary of its School of Chemistry in 2013. The opera will receive its first performance at a special concert in the Ballroom of Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms on 24 October. It will be performed by world-class musicians and singers and conducted by Derek Clark, Scottish Opera’s Head of Music. The opera tells the story of a Polish independence fighter, socialist activist and chemist named Stanisław Hempel, who came to Edinburgh in 1943 to undertake scientific work in support of the Polish Armed Forces in the West, in which he held the rank of lieutenant. He was given a laboratory by Prof. James Kendall, Head of Chemistry at Edinburgh University at the time, who also features in the opera. The lineup of characters is completed by Dr. Chrissie Miller, the first female chemist to be inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In preparation for writing the piece (for which he also wrote the libretto), the composer thoroughly researched the history of chemistry at Edinburgh, and interviewed countless present and former students and members of staff – including several who studied here in the 1940s. Via the Internet, he even tracked down a grandson of Stanisław Hempel in Łódz in Poland, gaining unique insights into the life of the opera’s central character. Julian Wagstaff said: “It has been a real privilege to work on this project. I have met some fascinating people, and greatly enjoyed getting to grips with the science, and of course the history of this fascinating department. I am thrilled that a conductor of such experience and renown as Derek Clark has come on board for the project, along with absolutely first-rate musicians and singers. Scottish Opera have given me a huge amount of practical support and help with the project, for which I am enormously grateful.”

University, said: “I am really looking forward to the first performance of Breathe Freely. It has been a great experience for students and staff within the School of Chemistry to interact with Julian on this project. It will be a unique legacy of our Tercentenary year and I am delighted that Scottish Opera has been so generous with their support.” Alex Reedijk, General Director at Scottish Opera, said: “It's common knowledge that I am very keen on the development and commissioning of new opera in Scotland and I'm pleased that Scottish Opera has been able to provide support to Julian and The University of Edinburgh in delivering the performance aspect of such an interesting project.” It is hoped that October’s concert will bring both classical music and science to new audiences. The programme will open with a performance of Julian’s piano trio A Persistent Illusion, commissioned by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2011. Composer Julian Wagstaff enjoyed a sell-out success on the 2007 Edinburgh Festival Fringe with his opera The Turing Test, about the quest to build a truly intelligent machine. His stage musical John Paul Jones, set during the American Revolution, was revived as a concert version in 2010 in association with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

The View and hip-hop's Tinchy Stryder to launch Paisley's Christmas celebrations Paisley : 16 November : www.paisley.org.uk

Tinchy Stryder

This year’s Paisley Christmas Lights switch-on promises to be bigger and better than ever before, with not one, but two headline acts performing on Saturday 16 November. UK hip-hop star Tinchy Stryder and Dundee rockers The View will be on hand to kick off the celebrations alongside boyband Mr Meanor, female pop sensation Alexa, the Clyde 1 Roadshow DJs, and Santa Claus with his reindeer. Tinchy Stryder will take to the stage performing his biggest hits, including new single Help Me. With two top 10 albums, seven top 10 singles, Tinchy will get the party started in style. With two number one singles under his belt and collaborations with acts such as Taio Cruz, Wiley, Pixie Lott and Calvin Harris, Tinchy will bring a show never been seen before in Paisley.

They’ll introduce all the top performers, as well as playing music and offering some great giveaways and prizes throughout the afternoon. Renfrewshire’s Provost Anne Hall will hit the Big Red Christmas Lights Switch-On button at 6pm. Renfrewshire Council Leader Mark Macmillan said: “Paisley’s Christmas lights switch-on ceremony has established itself as being the best way to start the Christmas season. “This year’s line-up will again draw a huge crowd to Paisley town centre for the performances and the programme of activities and entertainments going on throughout the day. “Renfrewshire Council has invested in our events programme to support businesses and boost the regeneration of Paisley town centre. The Christmas Lights switch-on is a highlight of that approach. “We are continuing to work with the local business community on their continuing involvement in and support of the town centre events programme. “Last year almost 40,000 people came in to Paisley town centre for this exciting annual event. We’re all looking forward to another fantastic day in Paisley.”

https://twitter.com/RenCouncilNews

The View formed in 2005 when four schoolmates got together and started writing music. Two years later, they emerged with the Mercurynominated, chart-topping debut album Hats Off To The Buskers and embarked on huge tours, tearing up stages across the globe. Three albums later, including two in the top ten, countless Best Album awards and numerous top ten singles the band are now older, wiser and ready. Before the big finale there is a terrific line-up throughout the day. Starting with the traditional reindeer parade at noon from Gilmour Street, which this year will be led by Santa Claus himself! Completing the musical line-up is Mr Meanor, a four-piece pop/R&B boyband with members from the US and UK and YouTube sensation Alexa. On the main stage in Gauze Street the Clyde 1 Roadshow team with DJs Gina McKie, Romeo and Gavin Pearson will be ready to kick-off the live entertainment from 1pm.

Sebastian Forbes

............ member profile: This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members

"The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

Choral singing and conducting have been central to the musical career of Sebastian Forbes. His music found its focus through a series of chamber works in the 1960s. These include the Piano Trio (1964) which, as Conrad Wilson wrote in The New Grove (1981), established him as a composer of intellectual toughness, and culminated in a joint share of the 1969 Radcliffe Award with his String Quartet No.1, a landmark in an exciting maturity (The Strad). Significant commissions followed, including orchestral works for the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh International Festival, and pieces for leading recitalists and chamber music groups. He was awarded the Cambridge MusD for Composition in 1977. He has often conducted performances of his music, including his Sonata for 8 at a "Round House" Prom in 1979 and abroad - a beautiful and thrilling work, with a fine sense of colour...a really attractive piece, very well performed by the Nash Ensemble under the positive direction of the composer (The Times). Sebastian Forbes directing Surrey Cantata

Sebastian has continued to compose for orchestras, ensembles, recitalists and choirs, including two settings for Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, of the Evening Canticles - absolutely masterly (Organists' Review). Among works recorded on CD are Triple Canon for trumpet and digital delays (1988) and commissioned works for Bristol and Ely Cathedrals (1991 and 1995). Significant among more recent works are Sonata-Rondo for piano, Reflections for chamber organ, and String Quartets Nos. 4 and 5, all of which exemplify his characteristic subtle harmonic plotting (Revised New Grove, 2000). In his student days at Cambridge, Sebastian Forbes sang in the Chapel Choir of King's College. He has since directed many choirs - large and small, professional, semi-professional, student and amateur. He conducted concerts, broadcasts and recordings with the Aeolian Singers in the late 1960s, with an emphasis on J S Bach and new British music. He was similarly active with the Seiriol Singers (Bangor University) with whom he won the UK mixed-voice round of the BBC's Let the Peoples Sing in 1971. A decade later he again achieved this accolade, with the Horniman Singers, with whom, for ten years, he gave numerous London concerts (St John's Smith Square, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room). Sebastian Forbes is Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Surrey, where he is also Director of Music. His teaching covers a wide range besides composition, and in addition he is active as a conductor and a record producer.

Offering a wealth of advantages, initiatives include the bi-monthly Composers' Digest and Exposed Melodies podcast series, annual Composition Marathon, regular networking events and notification of valuable opportunities, extensive publicity and increased correspondence with national companies, chamber ensembles, soloists and festivals.

StG Promotions present: The Courtesans support from: Splintered Halo : Trongate Rum Riots : Aperture : The King Lot live : 31 October - Glasgow : 1 November - Edinburgh : www.stgpromo.com

StG Promotions aim is simple, to bring the best live music to various venues around the Glasgow area. They plan to bring better-known artists to smaller venues and support the local music scene by offering attractive support slots. StG Promotions grew out of a love for music and the chance for two old school friends to work together after 20 years - they want you to enjoy the journey with them!

The Courtesans : www.facebook.com/thecourtesans

Becoming well-known for their 'Stripped Sessions' music nights which soon move to an interesting new venue at Adelaide's Auditorium they have a special Halloween treat for music fans in Glasgow and Edinburgh. For that scariest of nights StG have brought The Courtesans to Scotland with their theatrically crafted brand of sultry, unapologetic electro rock with a bite, these four girls are rash, wild, powerful and unstable! The Courtesans met on a dark wild night in London spurred on by absinthe kisses and tales to never be repeated, The Courtesans bring together four emphatic personalities merged by fate. Raucous guitars brush up against thigh-skimming angelic chords and seductive sounds; an irresistible mix of unpredictable music and provocative live shows all wrapped tenderly in the feminine form. Restless, tortured by their own dreams and a passion for their art, the secretive band have decided that their time is nigh. The Courtesans are Sinead La Bella (Light), Agnes Jones (Darkness), Saffire Sanchez (Rebel) and Victoria Brown (Temptation). Debaucherous, vicious and addictive, the band’s brazen take on The Velvet Underground’s ‘Venus In Furs’ gives a tantalising taste of things to come. Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/thecourtesans/venus-in-furs-mp3

Splintered Halo are a Heavy Metal band from Glasgow with virtuoso session musicians at its core: www.facebook.com/splinteredhalo

With a uniquely theatrical slant in their approach to sensual, ethereal triphop, The Courtesans are currently recording their debut album, supported by a huge hypnotised fan-base and fully-funded by a successful Pledge campaign. Pledgers were privy to an exclusive uncensored video of ‘Dirty Killer (Remix)’ created by and featuring the band. See the censored version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m7KYbj-RHU On 31 October they play Glasgow's Classic Grand with support from Splintered Halo and Trongate Rum Riots. To spice up the evening further there will be Burlesque performers in-between the bands with free horror make up from Sarah Scars. Scotland's capital doesn't miss out though as the girls travel to Edinburgh's Cabaret Voltaire to extend Halloween a further day - and where better than in Edinburgh's own unique underground venue.
