Mark Radcliffe Show releases Adam Holmes & The Embers' live session as a download MUSIC NEWS Scotland favourite 23 year old Edinburgh-born Adam Holmes is one of the brightest rising stars on the Scottish music scene, with influences – including Townes Van Zandt, Nirvana and Sandy Denny - from either side of the Atlantic. Mixing trad, folk and Americana, he has built up an impressive reputation in just a few years, since writing his first song at 15. Adam is a singer and Adam Holmes and the Embers at Cambridge Folk Festival 2014 : photo by Di Holmes songwriter of rare and timeless potency, combining John Martyn’s strum and sting laced with Paolo Nutini soul and a touch of traditional folk. Adam has performed numerous live radio sessions – including the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Mark Radcliffe Folk Show. Following a rapturous response to that session (which saw his debut CD Heirs and Graces shoot to no 5 in the singer/songwriter charts and bubble just outside the main itunes top 100) the 3 songs from the session – the upbeat Monday Morning, the introspective I Can’t Be Right and the showstoppingly melancholic Oh, My God - have been selected for digital release (by the Mark Radcliffe Folk Show) on 12 October 2104. They can be downloaded from itunes, Amazon and the usual digital outlets. Adam is taking to the road this Autumn with dates including the London Folk & Roots Festival on 11 November, a double bill with fellow up and coming singer Maz O’Connor which promises to be unmissable. He will also be playing with his band the Embers (Paul Gilbody, John Lowrie, Steven Blake and Alex Hunter) at the Convent (South Woodchester), Glasgow Americana Festival, Edinburgh and Shetland. Previous dates this year include the prestigious Cambridge Folk Festival, Celtic Connections, Edinburgh Queens Hall and sellout dates at the Edinburgh Fringe (Gilded Balloon). Adam’s debut album Heirs and Graces was longlisted for the Scottish Album of the Year Award 2014, in what was generally recognized as an exceptionally strong field. Heirs and Graces was produced by music legend John Wood (responsible for seminal albums by John Martyn, Nick Drake, Sandy Denny and many more), who brings his signature balance of space, perspective, clarity and warmth to Holmes’ debut. The album features 10 original songs, with lyrics that resonate like old folk songs, set to melodies rooted in haunting slow airs.

Django Django's Dave Maclean Launches Vinyl Label 'Kick + Clap' First Release: 'Knights Of Shame' EP by Fellow Scot Producer NEIL LANDSTRUMM Whilst most will know Dave Maclean as the drummer, producer and de-facto leader from the Mercury-nominated, UK four-piece Django Django, Maclean is first and foremost a DJ and record collector. In keeping with the myriad of influences captured on Django Django’s awardwinning, debut album, Maclean’s eclectic tastes have long been looking for a suitable outlet and today sees a long-awaited dream finally come to fruition, as Maclean announces the launch of his record label Kick + Clap, in collaboration with Django Django’s label Because Music. Planning to release music from established artists, alongside finding and nurturing new talent, with some interesting collaborations along the way, Maclean, as a predominantly vinyl DJ, is releasing limited numbers of collectable vinyl, alongside digital, across every Kick + Clap release. Kick + Clap’s debut release comes courtesy of fellow Scot producer Neil Landstrumm, with an EP entitled “Knights of Shame”. Well known for his early Peacefrog Records‘ classics such as “Brown by August”, Landstrumm “I've been collecting records for as long as I can remember. When I began DJing, I made the decision early on to buy and play 12” records that I just liked, no matter the genre. Right across hardcore industrial techno, Chicago house, jungle, hip-hop, psych rock, jazz… anything I liked, I’d buy it and play it out. In a way, Kick + Clap has been in the making since back then and I've started it with exactly the same sensibilities; to put out 12" records from across many genres, that make me excited about dance-floor music.” DAVE MACLEAN, KICK + CLAP

Dave Maclean

has been navigating unchartered musical territories since the 1990’s. Circling mostly around experimental techno, Landstrumm is also know for exploring grime and dubstep, long before it was the done thing and has released nine albums across legendary labels such as Peacefrog, Tresor, Mosquito, Planet Mu, Sonic Groove and his own imprint, Scandinavia. ALBURN BRIGHT IN THE GLASGOW MUSIC SCENE by Jamielee Cannon

Alburn, or “four happy men playing angry music” (as they are also known) are a Glasgow based rock band hitting the alternative scene with an explosive bang this year. Although the lads haven’t yet had much press they’re soon to be the subject passing everyone’s lips.

Alburn : photo by Alex Lister / www.vielumiere.co.uk

“I just want to play shows on the biggest stages possible and play shows with some of my favourite bands” Currently unsigned the band gained their fan base and success through their own individual determination to “make” it big. Yes, the lads do want to become a well known band who are instantly recognised, I mean what band doesn’t? However, drummer Danny Kelly measures his success in a much more humble way rather than simply monetary value. He stated; “If people I don’t know have heard of my band, then that’s success” the release of the new EP, this is down to the fact that the lads will be able to: approach Further into a chat with the band it was made labels, promoters and the media which will allow apparent that they have big plans for the year them to gain more press coverage and maybe ahead with the release of their new EP. EMILIO LARGO

THE OXBOW LAKE BAND

Between New Year & Valentine

Derealise

Boy Angus

Singer-Songwriter Patricia Morris is a classic storyteller in the finest Celtic Tradition. With a rare purity of tone and an impressive vocal range, her wider musical catalogue ranges from Gershwin, to Schubert, to Burns, but it is her Scottish and Irish roots she is most influenced and defined by as revealed in her songwriting. These are her latest offerings of Blues and Folk inspired songs.

After parting ways with former guitarist Joe Wyman, we took on board a new guitarist, Andrew Beveridge. The chemistry was instant and we began writing the follow up to our debut EP 'In Uniform We Divide'. Taking a more straight forward approach to song writing this time, we focused on melody and harmonies whilst still retaining elements of what sculpted the sound of 'IUWD'. Drawing on elements from bands like Oceansize, Arcane Roots and Fall of Troy, it is a further progression of our sound.

HOW TO SWIM

JAMES GILLESPIE

Fight Or Flight

Niagarama

Before I Die

The Hazy Shades debut EP, 'Fight Or Flight' is a statement of intent about rock n roll dreams and desires.

How to Swim is the brainchild of Scottish BAFTAwinning writer and composer Gregor Barclay. Although known for their expansively orchestrated recorded work and a similarly maximalist approach to the idea of band size, the group is currently operating as a lean sixpiece, comprising members of The Second Hand Marching Band, The Martial Arts and the now-defunct Mother and The Addicts. Their forthcoming sophomore full-length, Niagarama, is a concept album of sorts, exploring the loss of youth and how we process it.

James is an acoustic singer/ songwriter based in London. James brings a lot to his music - honest story telling from Folk, Pain and Passion from Blues, hooks from pop and all with an indie edge. James' live performance is engaging, honest and mesmerising. His personality is charismatic and contagious.

TEN TONNE DOZER

It's Not Enough

This Human Error

Uit de Buik - Duivel te koop

'It’s Not Enough' conjures up the atmosphere of a sundrenched road-trip on America’s Pacific Coast Highway, with its slight air of melancholy, and gentle dappled sunlight that’s all the more precious because it feels so transitory.

Foreign Skies are a three piece post-rock/ambient influenced band based in Glasgow, with release of their debut EP the band are looking to be gigging around Scotland in the coming months

live album (recorded in Belgium on our 202 tour) cd - Release Date: Out Now Ten Tonne Dozer are a heavy rock act based on the remote Shetland Islands. The band have played many gigs and tours, dozering their way throughout UK and Europe, their live shows are choc full of dozer mayhem and packing some serious ten tonne punch. It is an awe inspiring mix of blood, sweat, broken strings, and sheep skulls. It paves the way for the beginning of an epic journey throughout the ages of dishevelled dirt mongering slovenly metal and downright filthy Viking rock in Shetland.
