Nothing Ever Happens Here...

returns to Summerhall Edinburgh's Summerhall is excited to announce the Autumn programme of Nothing Ever Happens Here… live music nights in it’s brilliant Dissection Room.

Edinburgh's 'The Spook School' support Joanna Gruesome on 23 September : www.facebook.com/thespookschool

Sam Gough, Summerhall General Manager talking about the year round programme said: "After a storming set of sell out gigs during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival we are excited to continue our excellent live music nights throughout autumn and beyond. We have a great selection of established and upcoming bands from across the world and are particularly proud to provide a platform for the next generation of Scottish artists to grow an audience in.” Get ready to go totally nuts for Joanna Gruesome on the 23 September who will be playing tracks from their new album Peanut Butter, amongst other songs. The band all originally met on a wine tasting holiday. Their terrific debut album Weird Sister took the world by storm when it was released in September 2013, going on to win the Welsh Music Prize. At radio their singles have scored a remarkable four out of four on the BBC 6Music playlist and the band have played sessions for both Lauren Laverne on 6Music and for Huw Stephens on Radio One. Support comes from the up and coming The Spook School.

With support from F. Ampism, the solo experimental and audio-visual project of Paul Wilson, also of Brighton’s freejazz weirdo collective Bolide. He creates swirls of delay and other worldly textures through pedal and electronic manipulation, sometimes aided with projections of his own homemade collage films. There is also support from Tissø Lake (aka. Ian Humberstone) who falls neatly into a close knit circle of Edinburgh musicians and songwriters that have been meticulously honing their craft for a number of years, having collaborated and performed with the likes of Rob St. John and Eagleowl and is also the co-founder of the excellent Folklore Tapes.

Founded by producer-composer Ryan Lott in 2007, and with recent band additions of guitarist-composer Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang, Son Lux is now a ferocious trio both live and on record. Charlotte Eriksson, a complex, deep and very ambitious young singer songwriter originally from Sweden, who moved to London when she was 18 armed with her guitar, a worn-out bag and a steely determination to make it on her own and more importantly on her own terms. This she has accomplished by developing her craft, writing deep and meaningful lyrics accompanied by memorable, catchy and heartfelt tunes, and steadily building a fanbase by gigging and recording two EPs under her own label, Broken Glass Records, and crowdfunding her album “I Must Be Gone And Live, Or Stay And Die” through PledgeMusic.

Charlotte said: “My first official show in my favourite city in all the world! It will be an amazing evening of music, hang, stories and good vibes. I'll play both old songs and completely new ones that no one has ever heard before. You can get your hands on my signed books and CDs, and we can take weird pictures together and talk about coffee” -

Daniel Scott is a 19 year old who has been writing and playing songs around the Edinburgh music scene for the past 3 or 4 years. His sound is mainly soul-influenced but many songs can be a mix of genre ranging from slow acoustic ballads to upbeat funk tracks. And Ross Arthur is a very energetic Singer/Songwriter - "The one man band who performs for the 3 absent members". Ross' material has been played by Jim Gellatly and Ross has performed his selfpenned songs to audiences 3000 strong. Tickets are available from www.ticketweb.co.uk/event/185671

ROSS AINSLIE : album : 'Remembering' release date - 18 September : www.rossainslie.com

Ross Ainslie is one of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians and composers, playing pipes, whistles and cittern. He is renowned for his highly acclaimed solo material, and as a skilled performer and prolific collaborator who performs regularly with bands Treacherous Orchestra – of which he is a founding member - Salsa Celtica, Dougie Maclean, Charlie Mckerron, India Alba, and with Jarlath Henderson.

He has also received industry recognition for his talent with nominations for Musician of the year at BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2013 and Best Duo at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2014 with Jarlath Henderson, nominations for Best Instrumentalist at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2010 and 2012, nomination for Album of the year at the Scots Trad Awards with his debut solo Album “Wide Open” in 2013, as well as nominations in Best Live Act category at the Scots Trad Music Awards with Jarlath Henderson in 2008, and with Treacherous Orchestra in 2009 and 2010. Ross' solo album “Wide Open” was number 9 of 50 in The Scottish albums of 2013 in the Sunday Herald. In January 2015 Ross was commissioned by Celtic Connections to write a piece for the New Voices series. Ross decided to go outside his comfort zone and try out songwriting for the first time and “Remembering” is what he achieved. “Remembering” features five songs and three tune sets, from “Head High” which is a song about remaining positive and not dwelling in the past that features some words by the living legend Jock Duncan to a kind of psychedelic, thrash grass suite called “Nowhere To Go” which is in three sections. “Lullaby For Mel” was written for Ross’s friend that he lost far too early and it shows his flair for writing a beautiful slow melody. The album opens with a song called “Change” that reflects on Ross’s drinking days and the decision to go sober. Overall “Remembering” is an open and honest piece of music.

Shattered Echoes

Glasgow Jazz singer Eddie Toal has released a CD as a tribute to his wife Irene who always wanted him to make a recording. Sadly, Irene will never hear it. She died from Breast Cancer four years ago aged just 48. Irene’s dying wish was to help other patients at the Beatson Cancer Centre where she was treated. So Eddie (66) is donating all the proceeds from his recording to the Beatson Cancer Charity and hopes to raise thousands of pounds. “It’s not exactly the Taj Mahal but it’s the best I can do to remember her” says Eddie, an exrailwayman and semi-professional singer. “Irene used to nag me about making a recording of old songs that we both loved but I just never got around to it. Well, now I have and it’s for a great cause.”

‘Newly minted psychedelic’ band from Glasgow have their debut self-titled EP released on infamous student run record label Electric Honey. Brothers Kris and Pete have encapsulated all that is great about psychedelic, garage, rock and pop music into this record. A perfectly balanced EP.

Foxbeef: Powerful, melodic, hard rock with grunge sensibilities. Foxbeef released their début album Shattered Echoes on the 27 June, 2015. The drums were recorded at TPot Studios in Kinross with Robin Wynn Evans, whose credits include The Manic Street Preachers & The View. The band took on the responsibility to record and produce the rest of the album themselves, working as hard as they could over the course of a year to get the album to a place that reflected the bands personality and energy.

ALISTAIR OGILVY

STEVE GARRETT

In Praha

July Moon

Even Song

Paul Mellon (Guitars): This is our second single of our debut EP which we aim to release this autumn. In Praha is a song about 2 people falling in love in Prague. The main riff was inspired by Here Comes Your Man by Pixies and the solo is my own very poor imitation of / homage to Nels Cline's solo in Impossible Germany by Wilco. Some have called it catchy.

July Moon is the second studio album from singersongwriter Alistair Ogilvy - a strong collection of selfpenned material released on his own label and recorded at CHEM19 studios. Alistair was determined to push some genre boundaries while focusing on varying themes of love and loss, poetry and nostalgia. Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow produced the album and it also features Karen Mathieson from Capercaillie on guest vocals. This new release is sure to gain him new admirers and open up exciting opportunities.

Electric guitarist, re-imagining jazz, folk, rock and choral music. Born in London, Steve Garrett has lived and traveled across the UK, Antartica, Canada and California, and now calls Scotland home. His music springs from a lifetime of influences from diverse sources and performances. Even Song include songs of loss, longing, inspiration by landscape, resolution and hope. The reflective mood mirrors the fading light at the end of the day. Composers range from the 16th Century through folk and the 1980s to contemporary European jazz, with some original compositions. Arrangements bring out the full resonance of the guitar, sometimes backed by loops recorded in real time.

TIM DALLING

EAS

Eve's Bonie Squad

Album cd / download / vinyl? Release Date: 31 July It is never easy for a son to follow in the footsteps of a famous father, so Iain Jnr chose not to. He gave up the world of solo piping and went on his own musical journey. But what he was taught in his formative years is deep within him and this album is a definite attempt at some kind of filtering of the music of his hinterland. There is also a story present, sometimes a rocky one, of a father and son's relationship formed through a rich tradition and an art form that is deeply important to their culture and to both of them personally. There is a mixture of all these elements in this album and Iain Morrison is an artist who is following his own path, wherever that may take him.

The debut album from Edinburgh’s orchestral noise-pop collective, 'Amateurs’ is a spectacular amalgamation of live and programmable instrumentation that creates an overwhelmingly powerful sound. “Pure, simplistic and beautiful” - Artrocker "It’s the kind of music that makes me want to type all day in an attempt to describe its beauty” - The 405 “Urvanovic have managed to create a sound that is both complex and enchanting” The Vinyl District

Tied To The Moon was conceived in an apartment above a pottery studio deep in the sticks of Nova Scotia where Rachel had four days of complete stillness with no means to communicate with the outside world - during silent afternoons of coffee and pistachios, Rachel would sit, in total solitude; writing; reading; playing music. In the space of these four days she unintentionally wrote six songs - four that would later become the core of Tied To The Moon: ‘Tractor’, ‘This Love’, ‘Banks Are Broken’ and ‘Old Lady's Lament’.

The Good Haul

Fragmentality

Skorsa: The Riddle of the Earth

Fragmentality is the eagerly-awaited debut album from Becci Wallace. The album showcases an artful blend of genres, blurring the boundaries between folk, pop, trip hop, jazz and blues. The album follows the journey of an escapist, yearning for beauty from the unknown, the untravelled, and inevitably the route back to where she started.

Eagerly awaited debut album, produced by the legendary John McSherry (At First Light, Lunasa, Tamalin) and Donal O’Connor (At First Light), it contains an eclectic mix of tunes and songs. There is a fine collection of musicians performing on the album including John McSherry, Donal O’Connor, Ross Martin (Daimh), David Foley (Rura) and Pauline Scanlon (Lumiere). Tunes from Ireland and Scotland (both traditional and contemporary), self-penned tunes, as well as songs and tunes that Susan collected on her travels in Sweden, can be expected.

"The EP captures Josephine’s quirky style beautifully; a refreshing debut that makes her stand out from the crowd, certainly in these Northern plains anyway. Her music has a direct approach with the lyrics taking centre stage, wrapped in her accomplished almost Ben Folds style with a nod to Regina Spektor (who she has stated as being an influence). Tracks like You (Are Not The Reason), is a crushingly simple yet charming address to a former flame. If she can continue to go from strength to strength she is capable of delivering greatness.
