£900,000 support for cultural activity across Scotland from Creative Scotland in July 41 Open Project Awards of between £1,000 and £130,000 Creative Scotland awarded over £900,000 National Lottery Funding through the Open Project Fund in July to 41 recipients, including individual artists and organisations working across the arts, screen and creative industries. Awards of between £1,000 and £130,000 have been made to festivals, musicians, visual artists, dancers and writers. Gaelic musician Maeve MacKinnon has received funding towards her third solo album Songs of Work and Exile. WHYTE – a collaboration between Gaelic singer-songwriter Alasdair Whyte and electronic composer and musician Ross Whyte have received funding towards their debut album. The album will feature arrangements of 17th and 18th century Gaelic songs and original compositions. Maeve said: “My third album concentrates on songs of work and exile, predominantly in Gaelic. Gaelic waulking songs have always been my big love. I’ve been very lucky to have had access to some great tradition bearers over the years as well as the School of Scottish Studies, and Tobar an Dualchais. The idea behind the new album is really to go back to where it all started for me with the love of these songs. The rhythms and melodies in Gaelic work songs have an indigenous quality and patterns that can be recognised in other forms of indigenous music, particularly Native American songs and slave songs. The stories, melodies and rhythms convey so muchthere’s darkness, there’s humour, battle, romance and tragedy. And no matter if you speak Gaelic or not, I think people can hear that in these songs.”

"While Joe Rattray and I were frantically looking for an audio engineer when Dougie Laing was sick last week, I tried to call Robert twice. "Robert is a well-known key member of our society as an audio engineer and has vast skills as a musician. He has served and helped out in most of the music venues in Glasgow. KIM EDGAR :: album :: 'Stories Untold' release date - out now @ www.kimedgar.com/music/

In August acclaimed Edinburgh songwriter and pianist Kim Edgar launched 'Stories Untold', as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. An intimate and

inspiring collection of original songs, the album tackles topics including child soldiers, the impact of crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms.

Stories Untold features a song inspired by author Pippa Goldschmidt, and collaborations with award-winning songwriter Karine Polwart and poet Rachel Fox. Kim explains: “I received two messages from the universe while writing this album. One, on a wall in Marburg, said (in German) “love is the key” and the second, in a toilet in Glasgow, said “write about love”. I’ve tried to take both messages on board. We’re living in a really unsettled world, and I feel the more love and empathy we can generate, the better. For me, stories - whether made up or real - help us connect. So I’m using this album to tell stories that might otherwise pass by untold.

CERA IMPALA :: album :: 'Tumbleweed'

release date - 18 September @ www.ceraimpala.com/music

With her latest album, 'Tumbleweed', Cera Impala's songwriting talent takes centre stage: 13 sensual, intimate works—delivered in her unique, soulful honeyed voice—with themes ranging from love, sex, magic, friendship, and healing; to the dark mysteries of the human condition and even murder.

Tumbleweed was produced by Cera's long-time musical partner, "Dr." Dirk Ronneburg, with an emphasis on her seraphic voice and the candid stories she reveals from her world. The album playfully boasts a "100% Guitar-Free" certification and features Cera alternating between banjo and ukulele, with her band, The New Prohibition: "Dr." Dirk Ronneburg on the fiddle and Joel "Jello" Sanderson on double bass.

Cera Impala. Songwriter and multiinstrumentalist Cera Impala is a banjo-, ukulele-, and guitar- wielding mama who oozes wild style. Her voice is unique and timeless, and her writing style just as magical. She creates songs that feel instantly familiar. Cera performs with her hand-picked band, The New Prohibition, featuring the talents of Joel “Jello” Sanderson on double bass and "Dr." Dirk Ronneburg on fiddle.

The album also features all-star special guest appearances: Mary Macmaster (Macmaster/Hay, Shine, the Poozies)—electric harp on the murder ballad Flicker n' Shine; Pete Garnett (Moishe's Bagel)—accordion for the swingy Fingernail Moon Stylistically, the album travels between gritty and the anthemic Fire In Your Eyes; Calvin swing and edgy folk. Cera's advanced harmonic Arsenia—harp for the celestial Heaven, Alan sense and the band's improvisational spirit shine Ross—harmonica on the desolate Ponderosa, through, most always with an unexpected twist. and even turntable-scratching courtesy of Brieuc Hard-driving tracks are mingled with swingy Bestel (Jazz Combo Box [France]) on the A slice of hillbilly noir and a measure of gritty tunes; others have a wide and spacious groove. electrocoustic Home. All songs were written by 20's and 30's jazz, they have one foot in the past and the other in the future of folk, jazz and Americana. Dr. Dirk, her husband and long-time musical partner, is a fiddle-blazer of the highest degree; he also plays with gypsy jazzers Viper Swing and was a fiddler in the folk super-group, Southern Tenant Folk Union. The blues are deep in his heart and shine through in every note he plays. The synergy between them is palpable; she insists she met Dirk in a dream before meeting him in real life. It's more than plausible --their music is in indeed otherworldly.

Don’t be fooled; as whimsical as they may seem, there is a beautiful truth and intensity to Cera Impala and the New Prohibition, like a bar of deliciously dark chocolate - bittersweet, and very moreish. It would be an incredible feat not to fall in love with them.

Since then he has Things as a more discovered a scene which feels far more like his honest, natural natural habitat - the alt-folk world of Bon Iver, reflection of himself and where he is going. Perhaps the adoption of the name Baron Salmon allowed Samuel more freedom to be creative with his music. He describes the name as "a title, something to live up to." Wild Things has four tracks which showcase Baron Salmon's impressive ability both as a songwriter and a musician. The EP was selfrecorded and produced, with Samuel playing a range of instruments including guitar, piano, mandolin and banjo on the tracks. Baron Salmon has put a lot of himself into this EP, which invites us into his world. His biggest hope for the release is that people enjoy it and are able to connect with it.

Stories Untold

Crossing Borders

To Be Free

Stories Untold is an intimate and inspiring collection of original songs, tackling topics including child soldiers, crime and punishment, loss, and love in its many forms. Early responses have been positive, with five stars from Spiral Earth, and album of the week from Iain Anderson and Celtic Music Radio.

‘Crossing Borders’ was a Celtic Connections commission in 2015 written for a nine piece ensemble and represents Graham's musical journey to date, reflecting on places, people and musical styles that have influenced him and his music. The piece draws on vibrant Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles and is written in four sections, each highlighting one of these cultures. It brings together a fusion of traditional and classical styles in his own composition.

To Be Free is an interim project - in between albums number one and two - for Glasgow's Martha L. Healy. Including two originals and two of Martha's favourite country classics, the EP was recorded with her band over a snowy weekend in Glasgow in January 2016.

The Vivians 10th Anniversary Demos Album #TheVivians10yr - To mark their 10th anniversary of forming, cult indie punk band The Vivians will release a collection of songs spanning their tumultuous career. The self-titled album, digitally released 26th August 2016, will comprise newly mastered unreleased demos and rarities, recorded between 2006 and 2010, accompanied by a new video and artwork. Formed in August 2006, The Vivians dared to dream big and set out to achieve great things. From their humble beginnings in a basement rehearsal room in Edinburgh, through to splitting in April 2010, the band’s story is one of dreams, misguidance and brotherhood.

Wild Things is the first release from East Lothian Alt-Folk singer songwriter Baron Salmon. The four songs are tender tales of moving on, each one showcasing the musicianship, the fine singing and the mature songwriting of their creator. In these songs we also glimpse some of his influences, from Dylan to Bonnie Prince Billy, to Tallest Man on Earth, whilst never losing sight of the exciting new sound that belongs to Baron Salmon.

Oceans are an anthemic alternative rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. Influenced by varied range of acts; 30 Seconds To Mars, Explosions In The Sky, Thrice, and U2, Oceans' sound is a mix of powerful, soulful vocals with sing along choruses to soaring, melodic lead guitar, and rhythm with a punch.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download ALLAN MACDONALD & NEIL JOHNSTONE The Bruce 700

Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. B-Sides

One Kiss Later

David Altair has just released his 6th album entitled ‘B-Sides’. This is some work that was previously never released and is quite rare. The album has quite a psychedelic feel to it especially ‘we can’t stop now (the Wall)’. The album flows into a journey of ambient sounds and experimentation.

Ashton Lane are part of a new wave of homegrown modern country music originating in the UK and are sure to expand their growing fan base this year. The single One Kiss Later is out on 29 February 2016 Ashton Lane consist of Esther O’Connor and Tim O’Connor. The band performs as a duo but at times as a three piece when Graeme Duffin (Wet Wet Wet) joins them as guest guitarist. The band has a romantic back story, being husband and wife and also come from fine musical stock. Esther O’Connor’s musical heritage however spans right back to her childhood. She remembers being out on tour at only five years of age with Elton John on his US tour accompanying her Dad’s band Wet Wet Wet.
