SSE Set To Sponsor 2016 'Nordoff Robbins' Scottish Music Awards Annual event raises funds for Nordoff Robbins, Scotland's only Music Therapy charity

Music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins Scotland has announced that leading energy company SSE will again sponsor its 18th Scottish Music Awards, taking place on Saturday 26 November at the Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow. The annual star-studded awards ceremony is the main fundraising event for Nordoff Robbins, Scotland's only Music Therapy charity, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. Last year the SSE Scottish Music Awards raised more than £140,000, which helped facilitate additional music therapists and music sessions for vulnerable children and adults throughout Scotland. Donald MacLeod, Chairman of Nordoff Robbins Scotland, said: "The SSE Scottish Music Awards are one of the main reasons Nordoff Robbins is able to continue delivering life-changing music therapy to so many vulnerable people across Scotland. "In the past year alone, thanks to SSE and our other valued partners, we have been able to impact the lives of more than 450 people, delivering more than 8000 sessions conducted by our expert therapists. “With SSE's support again this year, we can continue to grow the charity and provide music therapy, which is so vital, to more and more children and adults across Scotland." Colin Banks, Head of Sponsorship and Reward for SSE, added: “At SSE, we’re proud to make a difference, so supporting Nordoff Robbins Scotland by sponsoring the SSE Scottish Music Awards for a second year helps us to contribute to the invaluable work of their talented and dedicated therapists.” The SSE Scottish Music Awards isone of the highlights of the Scottish events calendar, with past live performances from award winners such as Paolo Nutini, Wet Wet Wet and Annie Lennox. This year's awards will pay tribute to over ten acts, across a variety of genres – from dance music to rock and pop. www.nordoffrobbinsscotland.org.uk https://twitter.com/NRScot www.facebook.com/nordoffrobbinsscotland

SNJO to celebrate the 'Jazz Legacy' of Charles Mingus Arild Andersen is one of the world’s leading exponents of innovative acoustic bass playing and a seminal figure in European jazz. This autumn, he joins the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra to explore the legacy of a towering figure in contemporary music, Charles Mingus, with concerts in Edinburgh on 23 September, Glasgow on 24th and Aberdeen on 25th, directed by Tommy Smith. Together they will offer audiences in Scotland a unique glimpse into the complex world of a mercurial composer and musical visionary. Mingus sought constantly to transcend form, yet remain true to his soulful, jazz roots. It was one of many conflicts that ruled his life, and he expressed himself with nothing less than the fullest measure of his being. Perhaps, this is why so many musicians of every persuasion look to Mingus as an inspiration, and view his musical philosophy as a touch paper for re-energised creativity. Mingus also demonstrated the potential and power of the acoustic upright bass as a lead instrument, and virtually every bassist alive will cite him as a significant influence. The scope of the Mingus’ repertoire is

enormous, from solo piano to orchestral works on a massive scale. Yet, much of his music was informed by a deep and abiding love of melody, and he constantly sang his ideas out loud, as much to himself as anyone else in the room. Music and song were constant companions to Charles Mingus, and much, much more than mere subject matter. Artists like Arild Andersen, the SNJO and founder/director Tommy Smith are similarly guided, and they have consistently found new ways of communicating the richness and depth of the human experience. Arild Andersen and the SNJO therefore constitute a perfectly balanced partnership, empowered by individual artistry and spurred on by a collective spirit of adventure. Certainly, the performances promise to be highly responsive to the demands of Mingus’ huge emotional range, yet these musicians are ready to do much more than that. They are willing to pick up the gauntlet that Mingus threw down, and innovate, create and interpret in ways that the man himself would surely admire. GIGnotes ..... The Scottish National Jazz

“Making Music The World Needs” - popular duo returns from USA for Scottish dates One of the most successful roots music duos ever to come out of USA, Cahalen Morrison and Eli West, return to these shores in September for a string of dates that include a bypopular-demand run of appearances in Scotland.

The two-some are firmly established as one of the most important Americana pairings to have emerged on the circuit in recent years. They count many well-recognised names among their supporters including Chris Wood who included them in his Six Best Folk Acts list in an article for The Times. Their last album (their third) was produced by Tim O’Brien who also nailed his colours to the mast, declared himself a fan and said that in his opinion, they “make music the world needs!” When Cahalen and Eli originally released their debut album in Europe, it met with

instantaneous reaction, Bob Harris inviting them to record a studio session for his BBC Radio 2 show. Mark Radcliffe also invited them in for a Folk Show studio session, also at BBC Radio 2. They created a huge impact during their first ever UK tour and debut Celtic Connections Festival, and were subsequently invited back to the Glasgow event for their own headline show. They’re back from their base in Seattle with a promise to keep fans happy with a selection of better-known material as well as new songs. In demand for major events on both sides of the Atlantic, they have appeared at prestigious Stateside gatherings such as MerleFest. The Scottish-based Brookfield-Knights music agency say that of all the acts they have worked with, the duo has consistently built on their fanbase each time they return. “It has been very rewarding for them. Last time around they attracted full-house or near-capacity crowds to their shows. “It is one of those situations where word-ofmouth, particularly amongst their peers, has really helped to establish them as a must-see act. “The very same thing happened in America where they are each held in the highest regard,” said booker Dunc Mackinnon. “This time, they have things nicely balanced between playing venues they have been to before as well as places they are visiting for the first time.” GIGdates .....: (Scotland) Sept 12: Traverse

Grammy award-winner recording Ryan's reinventions of traditional Scottish tunes

Leading a new wave of young Scottish fiddle players, Ryan Young recorded his debut album last week at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with triple Grammy award-winning producer Jesse Lewis. Jesse has an interest in high resolution recording and cites an ambition to 'seek and capture a life and tactility in the sound.' His recordings are world renowned for the audiophile qualities, being recorded in a sympathetic acoustic venue rather than a studio. Combined with Ryan's unique and innovative style, including his 'depth of dynamics and precision', the result will be a treat for fans of high resolution audio. In his first recording venture on UK soil, Jesse brought his infectious positive spirit to the recording of Ryan's album. This collaboration will place Ryan among a list of world-class musicians who have worked with Jesse, including The Silk Road Ensemble, Yo-Yo Ma, Bela Fleck, Jan Vogler and Brooklyn Rider. The Immersive Music Project, founded by Jesse in 2015, makes use of new technologies, including designs of tactile and immersive new music experiences, to develop new music formats and release channels, both physical and digital.

ALEX TRONIC VS LEITH BASS TEAM :: album :: 'Nature Flow' release date - 17 October @ www.alextronicrecords.co.uk

Nature Flow is the third album from Scots producer Paul Croan using the aka Alex Tronic. Previous albums are To Infinity (2009) and Shifting Sands (2011)

and Goa chillout but it mostly has roots in a modern British sound. Croan said of the album: "The idea of the Nature Flow album is to have a focus on melody with not too many key changes. I wanted to create a simple but sophisticated sound that people may enjoy post club or a soundtrack to life in general."

This third cd comes under the guise of Alex Tronic versus Leith Bass Team. Leith Bass Team is another outlet for some of Paul’s material that features guest musicians from his label namely Matthew Leigh Embleton ( Snakestyle).

"There is a natural flow that runs through the album. Many elements are found and sampled real life nature sounds. These are hopefully used to create interesting results in the recordings."

The cd also features long time vocal collaborator Kirsty Brown and new contributions from Polina Domnina on violin and Scots chanteuse Georgia Gordon. The album is predominately a collection of down tempo electronic tunes with the emphasis on consistency of sound. The disc hints of Ibicencan

Paul has previously compiled many cds for the successful Goa Beach series for the German distributors Kontor from his studio in central Edinburgh. Georgia Gordon :: www.facebook.com/georgiagmusic

SARASWATI :: ep :: 'Ray of Sunshine'

release date - out now @ https://itunes.apple.com/gb/artist/saraswati/id303447411

Having gone down a storm at the recent Party at the Palace festival in Linlithgow Saraswati has now released her new EP 'Ray of Sunshine'. The EP includes the single 'Bad Habits' which she worked on with talented writers and producers John McLaughlin, Judd Mahoney and Nat DeLucia at Glasgow's BoomBox Studio. The other track on the EP is Sweet Little Bassline. Bad Habits and Sweet Little Bassline have just featured on the soundtrack to the cult movie 'Brotherhood' which has just been released.

Saraswati's inspirations cover many genres from the early jazz of the likes of Etta James to the magic of Michael Jackson and Bob Marley, fused with the contemporary style of Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone, Beyonce, Gwen Stefani, Natty, Paulo Nutini, M.I.A and many more. Saraswati grew up listening to these artists and dreamed of a life that was a far cry from her humble beginnings in a Katmandu orphanage. Saraswati was born in a remote farming village in Western Nepal, and has an older sister Tasha, she then spent almost 3 years in the orphanage there. In May 1998, nearly 3 years after Tasha had left to go to the UK, her adopted Mum flew to Kathmandu to finalise bringing Saraswati to Britain too. She then gained a passion for music and followed it through studying at a London university and then completing a Masters degree in songwriting at Bath Spa.

and World. My vision is to fuse styles, cultural influences and experiences to create a unique, fresh sound with insightful lyrics. I was thrilled to be invited to the film premier of 'Brotherhood' in London last week. Hearing my songs on the big screen was just mind blowing and something I’ll never forget." There's also has a new Saraswati album in the pipeline which should be out later this year, and you can watch a video of the single 'Ray of Sunshine' @ https://youtu.be/HcCjblEJFXg

"I have been working hard doing many little gigs up and down the country to get my music out there and I’m so happy with the response to the shows and my music. From playing small basement shows in Glasgow, Leeds, and London to being asked to play Party at the Palace in Linlithgow has been fantastic experience for me … what an incredible year I've had so far!” said Saraswati. Saraswati continued: "I have an eclectic taste in music. I take inspiration from so many different genres including Jazz, Blues, Reggae, RnB, Hip Hop and Urban

Wild Things

The Vivians 10th Anniversary Demos Album #TheVivians10yr - To mark their 10th anniversary of forming, cult indie punk band The Vivians will release a collection of songs spanning their tumultuous career. The self-titled album, digitally released 26th August 2016, will comprise newly mastered unreleased demos and rarities, recorded between 2006 and 2010, accompanied by a new video and artwork. Formed in August 2006, The Vivians dared to dream big and set out to achieve great things. From their humble beginnings in a basement rehearsal room in Edinburgh, through to splitting in April 2010, the band’s story is one of dreams, misguidance and brotherhood.

Wild Things is the first release from East Lothian Alt-Folk singer songwriter Baron Salmon. The four songs are tender tales of moving on, each one showcasing the musicianship, the fine singing and the mature songwriting of their creator. In these songs we also glimpse some of his influences, from Dylan to Bonnie Prince Billy, to Tallest Man on Earth, whilst never losing sight of the exciting new sound that belongs to Baron Salmon.

Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. PAUL TASKER

DAVID ALTAIR

Human Condition

Cold Weather Music

B-Sides

This is Doghouse Roses' guitarist Paul Tasker's first solo album. An all instrumental album peformed on fingerstyle guitar and clawhammer banjo with flute, flatpicked guitar, cello, pedal steel guitar and percussion. The 10 tracks are musical responses to both real life and imagined events and largely have a folk or old time Americana feel, but with 2 guitar duets adding a jazz tinge.

David Altair has just released his 6th album entitled ‘B-Sides’. This is some work that was previously never released and is quite rare. The album has quite a psychedelic feel to it especially ‘we can’t stop now (the Wall)’. The album flows into a journey of ambient sounds and experimentation.

The Mars Patrol have been honing their stirring alternative rock sound over a series of rapturouslyreceived EPs and singles. Now it’s time for their first album "Human Condition". Two Years Long

EP cd / download Release Date: 28 February

Album cd Release Date: Out Now

The Rising Souls are a thumping blue eyed soul band from central Scotland. They have been met with universal praise throughout the UK, Europe and more recently NYC. Their second album 'Yardbird' is a mesmerising blend of country, blues and soul. Frontman Dave Archibald displays a powerhouse vocal reminiscent of Frankie Miller and Otis Redding.
