SCOTTISH MUSIC CENTRE ............ Member's Profile :: PAUL MacALINDIN "The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

Paul MacAlindin has conducted orchestras and ensembles all over the world, from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra to the Armenian Philharmonic and the ensembles of the Düsseldorf Symphoniker, Psappha and Cantiere Montepulciano. His most striking role to date has been as the Musical Director of the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq.

Council on groundbreaking projects since 2001, such as The Turn of The Tide with the Croatian Radio Orchestra and 500 schoolchildren, which transformed music education in Zabreb. Conducting the Armenian Philharmonic, a cultural jewel, alllowed him to discover wonderful talents such as the Little Singers of Armenia and promote Armenian composers abroad. On first learning of the proposed National Youth Orchestra of Iraq in 2008, he immediately phoned British Council, without whom the orchestra would not be possible. Since musically directing their first summer course in 2009, Paul and the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq have performed Iraqi and western music live and across Arab TV. As a peace process bringing diverse, talented young players together, supplying teachers and resources, giving concerts and putting hope and faith in their potential, they have led Paul beyond the imaginable. Coaching and accompanying singers is also a joy, particularly when it leads to performances such as with baritone Mauricio Virgens in the Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall, Paul Carey Jones, Sean Clayton and Andrew Slater in Montepulciano or Paul Whelan and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Wellington. As a Cologne-based conductor, childrens’ concerts with the Düsseldorf Philharmonic keep Paul close to home and the future lovers of classical music.

He now leads The Glasgow Barons, a professional orchestra regenerating, one of Glasgow’s most beloved areas, the shipyard of Govan. For Paul MacAlindin conducting, at its most fundamental level means the art of bringing people together with passion, and leading them beyond expectations. Back in the 1990s Paul gave countless premieres of young composers’ work, both in orchestral concerts with Beethoven and Tchaikowsky, and with top ensembles such as Psappha in Manchester, live and on BBC Radio 3. Assisting Sir Peter Maxwell Davies at that time brought him in contact with great British works such as Maxwell Davies’ symphonies 5, 6 and 7 with the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic and BBC Philharmonic. Whether with repertoire or premieres, Paul learnt that performance could not be meaningfully taken to the edge without a profound understanding of composition.

TOMMY SMITH QUARTET :: Scottish Tour tour dates - September-November :: www.tommysmith.co.uk It isn’t every jazz tour that includes Tobermory and the world famous Ronnie Scott’s club in London but the schedule of dates saxophonist Tommy Smith’s new quartet has coming up will take the group to both of these places, and a few more. Back in February, Smith decided that the time was right to face something he’d been putting off almost since he began his career, a tribute to one of his biggest

inspirations, John Coltrane. With the fiftieth anniversary of the great saxophonist’s death due this year and his own fiftieth birthday approaching, Smith called the former Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year, pianist Peter Johnstone, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra’s bassist Calum Gourlay and Dutch drummer Sebastiaan de Krom and arranged a recording session at Castlesound Studios in Pencaitland.

pieces Smith wrote in dedication to his hero. “It’s something that saxophonists do on every significant anniversary and I could have done one at any time,” he says of recording a Coltrane tribute. “I actually recorded Coltrane’s classic Giant Steps on my first album, Giant Strides, when I was sixteen, but I’ve never felt ready to do a full-length tribute. I’m not sure I’m ready now, to be honest. Coltrane died when he was forty and here I am at fifty, still not playing at his level, but I felt, if I don’t do it now, I might never get round to it.”

By the end of the session they had recorded the tracks that comprise Smith’s latest album, Embodying the Light, which features favourite Coltrane compositions such as The new group made its public Naima and Resolution alongside new debut in a short concert before an invited audience for BBC Radio Scotland’s new jazz programme, Jazz Nights at the Quay in early April and then marked the anniversary of Coltrane’s death and the new album’s release with a soldout concert during Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival. Response to the album has bordered on the ecstatic with The Scotsman’s Jim Gilchrist awarding it five stars and The Herald’s arts editor, Keith Bruce declaring it “Absolutely top drawer.” The upcoming tour will see the

group playing without

amplification, a practice that Smith has long favoured when playing in his duo with pianist Brian Kellock and that became the norm when he toured the UK last year with Norwegian double bass master Arild Andersen’s trio. “I’ve nothing against amplified music,” he says, “but it feels more natural to play acoustically. It makes us listen to each other more carefully and the audience gets to hear the true sounds of the instruments and the band – we sound the way we are.” GIGnotes .....

PHIL CUNNINGHAM :: Wayfairing Stranger watch on BBC 2 Scotland on 26 September @ 7pm

Music and history combine in a new series, presented by acclaimed Scottish musician, composer and broadcaster, Phil Cunningham. Across three programmes, Phil explores age-old musical connections between Scotland, Ulster and America and celebrates not only an extraordinary history, but a vibrant, living tradition.

uncovers the fascinating story of how the songs, hymns and tunes they carried with them became a cornerstone of American music - country, gospel, bluegrass and rock ‘n’ roll. Phil’s journey takes him from Scotland, via the hearths and homes of Ulster, across the Atlantic and down the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia to the Appalachian Mountains and beyond. The story begins in Scotland, as Phil examines the distinctive sacred and secular traditions which would cross over the narrow sea to Ireland.

The migration of music unfolded over many generations and journeys. Phil follows in the footsteps of the Ulster-Scots pioneers who brought their music to America’s furthest frontiers.

He follows the mass migration of Scots to Ulster which began in the 17th century, and explores how their musical traditions enriched Ireland’s musical story, before travelling on to a new world.

Wayfaring Stranger with Phil Cunningham

Programme two follows the ‘wayfarers’ in their

next great migration, across the Atlantic, and picks up the trail on the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia to the Carolinas and Appalachia. Phil discovers how the musical legacy of those first Ulster-Scots settlers was cherished and handed down, but also how it mixed and mingled with native and African American traditions, absorbing new influences and new instruments to create something utterly unique. The final programme follows the story from the mountains to the mainstream, as another wave of migration from Appalachia helped bring the lasting musical traditions of the Ulster-Scots to a wider world. As he traces the music, and those restless travellers who carried it with them, Phil joins an international cast of performers, helping viewers experience for themselves the power of hymns, tunes and songs that have endured for centuries. Among the artists appearing in the series are country legends Rosanne Cash and Ricky Skaggs, rising star Rhiannon Giddens, bluegrass virtuosos Tim O’Brien and Jerry Douglas, along with Paul Brady, Mairéad Ní Mhaoinigh and celebrated Appalachian singer, Sheila Kay Adams. Wayfaring Stranger with Phil Cunningham is a Below the Radar production for BBC Scotland in conjunction with the Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund/Northern Ireland Screen. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08lnkqn

ALEX TRONIC featuring SHUNA LOVELLE

album / cd Release Date: 25 July

After many years as a well-known face on the band circuit, Bob Leslie’s re-invention of himself as an acoustic performer resulted in two well-received Americana CDs - In a Different World (2010) and Fat Cat (2011) - and a re-launch onto the folk circuit. There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller. Land and Sea is the result: twelve narrative songs, their subjects ranging from the Highland Clearances to a Stromness witch who told Walter Scott a few tales. Bob is accompanied by some of the brightest talents on the Scottish folk scene. Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com www.bobleslie.scot

The Seas Between Us

EP cd / download / stream Release Date: 28 October An unsigned 4 piece indie rock band from Edinburgh. Their influences are varied and include Swervedriver, Ride, Redd Kross, Smashing Pumpkins, Therapy?, Girls Against Boys, Helmet, Alice In Chains and Placebo to name but a few. Their music has been described by 7Ahead as “…the raucousness of early Nirvana records jumps out and appears to be revitalised in BHG’s style.” https://t.co/N11Ucdc4 Listen/Watch: www.brittleheadgirl.bandcamp.com https://m.soundcloud.com/brittleheadgirl

The title of this latest release from Richard Buchanan, former bass player with 90’s Scottish under-achievers The Lost Soul Band, is a mondegreen, or misheard words. This unashamed pop song describes a special, enduring friendship with a fellow troubadour and features an odd instrumental section.

Guillotine

Guillotine was launched on 10th oct at Summerhall with a massive 19piece line-up including string and brass sextets. This was the only way to do the album justice. Guillotine is the culmination of the band's 8 year weekly residency at Edinburgh's notorious Jazz Bar. This is definitely a huge step up in Mike Kearney's production and writing style. Enjoy! Atlas The Poets & The Beats album cd / download / stream Release Date: Out Now

The Poets and the Beats from Musician / producer Paul Armour (ex Seminal Glasgow Surf Pop Band “The Cuban Heels") “The album is very much a beat combo sound. Punchy with grooves using classic retro instruments: Rhodes Wurlitzer & Hammond, vintage amps and guitars. The feel is a mix of styles, melodic & rhythmic. Lyrically quirky with themes of hope and renewal. A recent review from Rock Fm. Scotland described the sound as “Weller-ish” but more refined! It’s all in the ear of the beholder. Enjoy the beats…” Listen/Watch: https://soundcloud.com www.youtube.com Available from: www.birnamcdshop.com www.paularmour.co.uk https://twitter.com/paul497191 www.facebook.com/paul.armour.31

Sir James MacMillan announced the programme for the 2017 Cumnock Tryst at a special event in the Dumfries Arms and the launch also featured a performance by Folk trio, Kilda, presented in partnership with Live Music Now Scotland. The fourth annual Cumnock Tryst Festival will take place in venues across Cumnock, New Cumnock and Auchinleck, and in Dumfries House between 28 September and 1 October.

The Lammermuir Festival was born of a conviction that historic architecture and beautiful landscape can be an ideal environment in which to experience great music and music-making. OCTOBER Glasgow Americana Glasgow 4-8 October

Glasgow's annual celebration of Americana brings musicians from as far afield as Texas and Canada to perform roots music from blues to rockabilly. Austin-based Slaid Cleaves has the honour of being the first act to be named for 2017’s Glasgow Americana Festival. The opening night concert is a tribute to ‘The Late Great Townes Van Zandt’ which will feature Rachel Sermanni, Jefferson Hamer, Davie Scott, Roseanne Reid, Jonas and Jane, plus a special guest. www.glasgowamericana.com

Ullapool Guitar Festival Ullapool 6-8 October

So why is the UGF so special? Perhaps it’s the mix of music old and new, of electric and acoustic, of steel and nylon, of seasoned performers and those, like the students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, just starting out on their careers. Perhaps it’s the location on Loch Broom and the drive up through some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. Perhaps it’s the informal air of the whole weekend: there’s no “us and them”, no VIP area. Everyone mingles, and you’re likely to find yourself sitting beside a guitar legend in the Festival Club – or even jamming with them on one of the trade stands.
