New Youth Acts Prepare To 'Hit The Road' - page 6 New composition performed by Mischa Macpherson at Blas - p3 :: Young Trad Musicians on Tour - p10

'Young Fathers' first band to win the prestigious SAY Award twice The 2018 winner of Scotland’s national music prize, the Scottish Album of The Year (SAY) Award, was announced on 6 September as the Young Fathers for their album 'Cocoa Sugar'. At a ceremony presented by co-hosts Vic Galloway and Nicola Meighan at Paisley Town Hall, the audience of music industry professionals from across the UK, engaged music fans and Scotland’s consistently strong mix of creatives celebrated as Young Fathers emerged as the winner, scooping the £20,000 first prize. Band member, Alloysious Massaquoi was ecstatic, saying “We want to thank everyone who voted, it’s fantastic for Scotland and diversity in music. This is a total surprise and an honour for us to win it twice and make history. We are obviously a multi-racial group who stand for openness, kindness, and love.” Formed in Edinburgh in 2008 by Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and Graham 'G' Hastings in 2012, they released their introductory mixtapes, Tape One and Tape Two. The trio then signed to Big Dada and released debut album, ‘Dead’, in 2014. Following an extensive world tour the band begin work on their sophomore album, ‘White Men Are Black Men Too’, which was released in 2015. Their album, ‘Tape Two’ won the Scottish Album of The Year in 2014. Robert Kilpatrick, General Manager at Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA), said: “A huge congratulations to Young Fathers for winning 2018’s Scottish Album of the Year Award. ‘Cocoa Sugar’ is a fantastic, world class record, which showcases the band’s incredible song writing talent and musicianship. Having previously won The SAY Award for ‘Tape Two’ back in 2014, as well as The Hyundai Mercury Prize in the same year for ‘Dead’, they continue to go from strength to strength.” Alan Morrison Head of Music at Creative Scotland said: “This second victory for Young Fathers is so well deserved for a band who have gone from strength to strength since they first stormed the SAY Award stage in 2014. It’s their most accessible release yet, with pop hooks and soulful vocals emerging from their trademark monsoon of global beats.” As well as Young Fathers claiming the first prize, the nine other Shortlisted albums each won a £1,000 prize and bespoke commemorative award including a soundwave from each of the albums’ lead tracks.

from the latest releases to reach us ....

www.rabnoakes.com In 2017 Rab performed a highly-acclaimed concert, with his ‘70/50 in 2017’ band of musicians at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket, as part of Celtic Connections. That concert, its songs and its players form the backbone of this record.

This autumn, you can spend a different kind of night down the pub with music by some of our finest new-generation composers, performed by top instrumentalists and singers, all brought to you by composer, Matthew Whiteside in The Night With…

The idea is to hear interesting live music, discover new composers and hear things you didn’t know you might like in a completely informal setting. Concerts each have three very short sections of thirty minutes or less, with new music, old music done in a new way and mainstream artists’ music with a twist.

Teenage Scottish accordionist makes history with podium place at global contest An East Dunbartonshire performer has made history after becoming the youngest person – and first Scot – to secure a podium place at one of the world’s most prestigious accordion competitions. Musician Ryan Corbett was also the highest placed European participant after coming third in the Performer category at the recent Harbin Summer International Accordion Art Week in China, in which he was competing against a stellar international line-up including undergraduate and postgraduate students. The 19-year-old, who has been a student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Junior Conservatoire for four years, overcame jet lag and tough competition en route to his success. Ryan, who attended Douglas Academy and Craigdhu Primary School, said: “There were accordion players from all over China, Russia, Serbia and me from Scotland. The hotel I was in was full of Russian musicians. It was wonderful because the Russians have done so much for the development of the accordion so we spent hours talking about the instrument and our different cultures. “We were sharing stories about how we play and perform, it was amazing. I felt so at home with them and I’d like to meet them again.” The Harbin Summer International Accordion Art Week forms part of the China Harbin Summer Music Festival. Among the events taking place were concerts, masterclasses and the international competition – though Ryan admits he did not appreciate the sheer scale of the festival until he arrived.

He said: “I didn’t know much about this competition until I arrived in China. There were 300 competitors from all over the world. It was a much bigger festival than I thought, it was global. “I wasn’t nervous playing in front of the huge audience. As a musician you learn how to deal with your nerves and put all of that into good use. I just got up there and hoped that the adjudicators, also from all over the world, liked what they heard.” The competition result was the latest milestone for Ryan, who started playing the accordion by teaching himself at the age of 11. At 14 Ryan, who also plays piano, started receiving lessons from Junior Conservatoire staff member, Djordje Gajic. Djordje supported Ryan during his trip to China and said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Ryan and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Ryan is a very talented, hard-working and highly motivated student who never fails to impress me with his ability, he is a pleasure to teach. “If he continues to develop and work hard, I think Ryan has the ability to establish himself as one of the leading performers of his generation.” Ryan, who also attended St Mary’s Music School, is preparing to commence studies in September on the Bachelor of Music degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, which is consistently ranked in the world’s top ten institutions for performing arts education. Before then, he is continuing to rack up the miles by attending a relative’s 90th birthday celebration in Mexico. He added: “I’m sure I’ll be playing a concert to celebrate once I get there.” More information on studying at the Royal Conservatoire is available at the links below.

Iain Thomson along with long-time friend and musician Marc Duff will release a new album entitled 'No Borders'. Through this visualised concert, Kathryn explores what happens when these etchings awake and painfully break through the tender flesh which held them tightly hidden. A heart-felt and poignant autobiography flows effortlessly through Kathryn's composition amidst innards and armour; refracted glimpses of flesh and fluids. From when I wake, acts as a marking of the moment before and after our secrets break. “Like watching an exposed photograph slowly come into focus it's an intense return, building to a dynamic, compelling conclusion.” Clash Magazine on Joseph’s new single. “By turns mournful and powerful, with the folksy warmth of Joseph’s harmonium and the otherworldly perfection of Joseph’s distinctive tone” The Scotsman ****

Niteworks :: album - ‘Air Fàir an Là’ release date :: out now @ www.niteworksband.bandcamp.com

‘Air Fàir an Là’ is the second album by Niteworks and the follow up to Niteworks critically acclaimed debut album, ‘NW’. The album takes its name, which translates from Gaelic to ‘at dawn of day’, from the album’s lead single which features a song composed by Màiri nighean Alasdair Ruaidh, a poet that lived on the Isle of Skye during the 17th Century. The band felt this title appropriately reflects the point where they are on their musical journey; the beginning of something new, different and unknown, with yet more potential to be seized and explored. Niteworks vision with Air Fàir an Là was to produce a record that blurs the lines between Scottish traditional music and contemporary electronica, by bringing together elements of Gaelic and Scottish folk song, traditional tunes and melodies, all melded together with cutting edge electronica.

Alex Menzies said, “having never worked with a band before, or had many dealings with traditional music, I was not the obvious choice for Niteworks to work with. I gained a lot from the experience and really enjoyed working with the band. I have a genuine new regard for traditional music, and this may well see further exploration.” Iain Morrison said 'I've been a fan of Niteworks so it was really lovely to be asked to collaborate on their new record. JOHN GRAHAM & JIM JACK

LINSEY AITKEN & KEN CAMPBELL Shore To Shore

Osgarra

Sae Will We Yet

album / cd Release Date: out now

album / cd / Release Date: out now

album / cd / Release Date: out now

The debut album by Beinn Lee, OSGARRA, is a product of five years of playing, writing and arranging music, as well as bringing together a strong traditional sense of tune with modern backing to create a new and fresh sound to West Coast traditional music. OSGARRA showcases a selection of tunes and songs written and arranged by the band in both Gaelic and English alongside tunes from some of Scotland’s foremost contemporary composers of traditional music, giving a musical landscape from reflective songs to driving dance beats. Formed in 2013, Beinn Lee are rooted in the West Coast style of traditional music.

John Graham and Jim Jack’s debut album features an eclectic mix of many of the favourite songs from their live act with contributions from some of the most talented contemporary songwriters from Scotland and further afield. Graeme Miles’ haunting ‘Eldorado’ hints at a life of missed opportunities while Iain Ingram’s ‘Calton Rose’ and ‘Braes o’ Appin’ are love songs in the Scottish tradition and Steven Clark’s ‘Coming Home’ talks of the plight of the many refugees cast adrift in the world today. Jim King’s ‘West Coast Days’ and ‘Home To The Kyles’ from the pen of Duncan McCrone and Celly Paterson evoke memories of summer days on the Clyde Coast. From earlier days of the folk revival come Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’ and Matt McGinn’s enigmatic ‘Magic Shadow Show’. John and Jim’s love of Americana is also represented in the rollicking ‘Truck Driving Man’. John and Jim’s act recalls much of the spirit of the folk clubs in the 60s and 70s with plenty of chorus singing and a fair measure of humour thrown in.

This is our second CD as a duo, with a mixture of new songs and instrumentals, many focussing on our Scottish connections around the world, each with a story, and most of all about people and histories of the past and present. Fortunately, people seem to really like what we do, and ask what kind of music we perform. The answer is not one genre or another, but a blending of everyone and everything we have met along the way. A coming together of both our musical journeys, combined into one together, with elements of our respective musical backgrounds in Celtic, Classical, Traditional, Contemporary Music and all else. But most of all our music is about people, and all those who have influenced us and inspired us along the way.

scotland's new releases ..... album : single : ep / cd : vinyl : download JAMIE MACDONALD & CHRISTIAN GAMAUF The Pipe Slang

JON BUDWORTH

THE FIRRENES

We All Share The Same Sky

Time and Place/Destitution Row

The musical partnership of the Scottish pipes and fiddle is one that is quintessentially and historically Hebridean. Jamie MacDonald and Christian Gamauf have taken this format and incorporated influences from places such as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and Asturias in the north of Spain, putting their own stamp on the music. Jamie and Christian met while living and studying on the Isles of Uist and began playing together at local concerts and events. After travelling to Asturias on a musical and cultural exchange project, along with performances at Ceòl on the Croft, Celtic Connections and Celtic Colours Festivals, the duo started working on their debut album, The Pipe Slang. The album features the traditional music of the Hebrides and includes songs from the Isle of Tiree as well as self-penned material and tunes from further afield.

Jon Budworth is a singer/songwriter originally from Lancashire but now very much an honorary Yorkshireman living in the bustling market town of Otley. Jon is a relative late-comer to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music, having spent many years cast adrift in the dark and seedy underbelly of rock’n’roll. Jon changed musical direction in 2010 after happening upon a Youtube video of Richard Thompson playing his beautiful and evocative song Beeswing. There has been no looking back ever since! Jon cites his influences, amongst others, as John Renbourn, Nic Jones and, of course, Richard Thompson.

There, his highly-crafted songs - some serious, some very funny indeed - had audiences showing lively appreciation. However, more and more, Bob found himself drawn to the challenge of writing in a more traditional Scottish vein - a medium, as it turned out, ideal for a musical storyteller.
