EASY MONEY? The definitive UK guide to funding music projects MusicTank today published its 6th industry report. Written by Remi Harris (formerly UK Music AIM) Easy Money? lists over 100 different funders of music across the six main sources of money – grants, crowdfunding, friends & family, loans, investment and sponsorship. The guide is littered with tips and tricks from a range of providers and includes case studies from several artists and entrepreneurs – including End of the Road festival’s Sofia Hagberg, Red Grape Management and Carl Barât. Several other myths are busted, including the notion that crowdfunding has peaked. The guide’s plain-speaking tone demystifies how funding works for musicians, entrepreneurs and micro-businesses, helping them discover sources of money they were previously unaware or unsure of. Horace Trubridge, Assistant General Secretary, British Musicians’ Union said: “We live in interesting times, the long term assignment of rights in return for investment is no longer the only option available for musicians and songwriters. The MU has long advocated the DIY approach for progressing a career as a musician and this much-needed guide to raising the necessary funds is a timely and invaluable tool in achieving independence and success.” Said author Remi Harris: “This book will save time for anyone starting out looking for funding. I’ve spoken to dozens of funders and fundraisers – and to artists and small businesses who have been through the experience of securing money – to collate their advice and tips. This will make the whole process quicker and easier for anyone looking for funding for music in the UK”

The RSNO’s opening concert of the 2013:14 Season in Dundee, sponsored by The Courier, is on Thursday 24 October 2013 at the Caird Hall.

Folk Rockin' 4 Flodden: 500 years of history

Dave Hull-Denholm (Lindisfarne)

Scocha

England - and - Scotland in an evening of music to commemorate the Battle of Flodden 500 years ago In the shadow of Norham Castle just yards into England over the symbolic River Tweed, and in the year before the Scottish Independence vote, this could have been the ultimate Battle of the Bands - a concert to commemorate the fallen of both Nations at the Battle of Flodden 500 years ago. Scotland had laid siege to Norham Castle and secured its walls just before the battle and to be standing on that exact spot, in the same month, all those years later was to prove a magical and emotional experience.

Steve Daggett and Charlie Harcourt

Scocha

Organised by Norham villagers this could have been a simple bash in the village hall, but no, they had worked hard to provide a full blown late evening outdoor concert in the shadow of the castle on ground where many must have fallen. Disrespectful? Most definitely not, this was an evening of passion, understanding and respect for what had happened in this field, repopulated for the concert by a huge number of Scots and English - many who could probably trace their ancestry back that fateful day - now united by history and music. Headlining the concert from the English perspective were members of the iconic folk band Lindisfarne; while closing the evening in their own special Scottish rock style were the Borders band Scocha - belting out songs that might have had Scots warriors of old rising from the ground - they certainly brought the crowd to their feet. The evening opened with the tremendous 'Small Hall Band' that has been introducing youngsters from the border area to music for over 20 years, followed by the distinctive sound of the Northumbrian Pipers. Ronnie Hek & Friends played a tune Ronnie especially composed after speaking to archaeologists working in the concert's field - he was accompanied by Hamish Bell, Alan Green, Ian Petrei and Alex Hek.

Derek Meins

Originally from the area but now based in Liverpool Derek Meins played a powerful set from work destined for his 2014 solo album, having in the past worked with Mumford and Sons and appeared on Jools Holland Later show. The highlight for many though would have been hearing songs from the 'Alan Hull Songbook', which include his solo and Lindisfarne work - including of course 'The Fog On The Tyne'. Watching music legends Charlie Harcourt and Steve Daggett was a real treat plus Dave Hull-Denholm who has just joined the new Lindisfarne line-up, along with Steve and Charlie. For the large Scottish contingent though the passionate finale by Scocha set many hearts pounding and may well have converted a fair few of our English friends! Well done to the organisers - a truly fantastic evening Ronnie Hek & Friends

THE SUNDANCER :

album - 21st Century Prophet$

release date - out now : www.facebook.com/TheSundancerMusic

Scottish singer-songwriter, The Sundancer, launched his new album “21st Century Prophet$ “ at Sloan’s Grand Ballroom in Glasgow on Sunday 29 September at 3.00pm. You can listen to the album here: http://snd.sc/1fu6X6z This album is independently released through Scotland’s newest independent record company The Sundancer Music Company Ltd and represents a visionary collection of magic, mystery and rock 'n' roll storytelling by Scotland's Cosmic Warrior, The Sundancer. The ten songs are visionary parables for the 21st Century at a time when apathy and austerity rule and the music industry continues to flounder in an XFactor culture. One of the songs on 21st Century Prophet$, A Headful Of Rhymes, name checks some of The Sundancer’s greatest influences, from Syd Barrett to Richard Ashcroft, John Lennon to Graham Coxon, David Bowie to Jarvis Cocker and it is in this lineage of songwriters that The Sundancer stands. “This is very much a studio based album that has allowed me record the songs as I hear them. It’s Captain Jack Sparrow meets William Blake at the gateway between Heaven and Hell…accessible yet otherworldly. These songs reach out to the best in all of us to re-engage our hearts over our iPods, our own imagination rather than Google and to love rather than LIKE.” The Sundancer

"...the singers voice is acutely soulful and perfectly edged to fit a variety of sounds and genres with comfort, and this is throughout each and every track as the songs do sweep though blues, soft rock, soul, and pop quite easily as the album goes on.
