“Dumb Ways to Think” Anti-Sectarianism Song Writing Competition with £1000 prize! DEADLINE! 4 October - enter @ www.burnsongpromotingsongwriting.wordpress.com A £1000 prize is up for offer as part of a government initiative to challenge views on sectarianism. The 'Dumb Ways To Think' competition has been inspired by an Australian viral campaign called Dumb Ways to Die. Sid Ambrose from the Kirkcudbright based South West Scotland Sectarian Project explained “Dumb Ways to Die has had over 70 million views on YouTube, it is a humorous animated song which ultimately conveys a message to young people about the dangers of playing near trains and train tracks. It has been so successful that our organisation wanted to emulate the idea and challenge deeply entrenched sectarian views through an animated song based on discredited beliefs, including ideas such as it is ok to be a ninety minute bigot.” To take the project forward the South West Scotland Sectarian project, which is run by Stewartry Council of Voluntary Service, has teamed up with Burnsong and the University Of West Of Scotland animation department. Robert Maitland from the organisation Burnsong commented “Scotland’s song writing promotion and development body Burnsong are proud to host the song writing competition ‘Dumb Ways to Think’. Burnsong, with the support of the Voluntary Action Fund, Scottish Government, SmartIndie and EM Records are calling on songwriters to write an original song to highlight and discredit sectarian beliefs.” Sid Ambrose is no stranger to organising song writing competitions, he
has long been associated with a number of music festivals including Eden and the Wickerman who have promoted competitions to discover new talent. Sid remarked “in this instance the competition will play its part in highlighting widely held negative attitudes based on inter Christian religious differences, it will also give a substantial cash prize to a songwriter and the opportunity to see their song become animated to a professional standard.” The animation element of the song writing prize has made this a fairly unique competition. Evelyn Fitzpatrick from the University of the West of Scotland’s Paisley campus commented “ We are delighted that one of the University’s Computer Animation graduates, Jamie Ferns, is enhancing his practical experience through the animation work on this project. It tackles a hugely important issue in Scottish society and we welcome the opportunity for one of our recent graduates to contribute to this initiative.” To enter this competition you can be any age or nationality, however you need to submit original material which you own the rights to. A list of discredited beliefs including sectarian beliefs will be supplied to you by the competition organisers, and it is expected that these will form the basis of the song submission; closing date is the 4 October with the winner being announced on the 30 November. “Dumb Ways To Think” is a FREE to enter Songwriting Competition. The aim of the project is to highlight the similarities between different Christian faith communities by exposing discredited sectarian negative beliefs and myths. A professional animation will be made based on the winning song. The project leader is professional songwriter Robert Maitland MA Songwriting, BA hons Music, Ad.Dip. Music for Film & TV and tutor for Burnsong Young Songwriters. The competition is organised through Burnsong (national body for developing the art of contemporary songwriting in all its many forms). With the support of the VAF, Scottish Government, S.W Scotland Sectarian Project, SCVS, SmartIndie and EM Records.

Crafted by Edinburgh-based maker of violins, violas and cellos, Steve Burnett, the wood was gathered as part of routine pruning at the historic garden. The use of willow is unusual – violins are mostly made from maple or sycamore. However, the willow adds to the instruments qualities, as Steve explains: “Willow gives the instrument a full-bodied mellowness, as it is a slightly softer wood than the usual first choices.”

20th-Century Perspectives : City Spaces & Strings announced as Anderston Centre TICKETS! Available from the CCA box office - www.cca-glasgow.com - 0141 352 4900 The Scottish Ensemble has announced the venue for its ambitious collaboration with visual artist Toby Paterson as Glasgow's Anderston Centre. Designed by Richard Seifert and completed in 1972 it is an important Glasgow Modernist landmark. Performances will take place in the Anderston Centre on 12 & 13 September. The building was a key part of the city’s urban renewal project during the 1950s-70s but since then some elements have been demolished or replaced. 20th-Century Perspectives will take place in an abandoned section of the building not normally accessible to the general public. Within this striking setting Scottish Ensemble will perform music that spans the 20th-century, from Elgar to Stravinsky; from Prokofiev to Xenakis; from Britten to Erkki-Sven Tüür. SE’s Artistic Director Jonathan Morton is passionate about programming and performing this powerful, immediate music for strings. This project is a major part of SE’s celebration of his 10th anniversary as leader and artistic director. Paterson will create large-scale works that reflect the bold architecture of the space and also frame the performances by SE. From within the building large windows afford a rare view of Glasgow’s architectural history: from Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson to new office buildings yet to be completed overlooking the Kingston Bridge and the M8 – another important project in the story of Glasgow’s urban renewal.
Watch this film about the project @ http://youtu.be/sGB8E_pSRag
Paterson is one of the leading Scottish artists of his generation. He is interested in the work of architects who were influenced by Modernism, finding inspiration in this controversial, utopian architectural project. His work goes beyond merely documenting these spaces: he reimagines and reinterprets them, often removing them from their immediate environment. Born in Glasgow in 1974 Paterson studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 19915. He has exhibited internationally and is currently represented by Glasgow’s most important private contemporary art gallery, The Modern Institute. In addition to his prolific career as an exhibitor he has created a number of large-scale public commissions.

songwriting with his unique inimitable style. "one heck of a voice" - Jim Gellatly. It took Eoghan nearly three years to complete juggling marriage and a new baby to find the cashflow to complete the project and combine's a mix of old and new - "kinda like a greatest hits". Whilst working as a medical student in a bush hospital in Africa, Eoghan contracted a near-fatal dose of malaria. His only comfort was a cassette of Jeff Buckley's 'Grace' - a fate that changed his life. With a voice now endlessly compared to Jeff Buckley, Eoghan's near death experience became a calling to music - "The Jeff Buckley-esqe agility of his voice made for a

With the right help and development he could go on to sell millions of albums" - Amanda Ghost (President of Epic Records and co-author of Jame's Blunts 'You're Beautiful") Eoghan has released two singles on his own label (Eject Records) which have been play-listed on dozens of nationwide radio stations including RTE1 in Ireland and BBC Scotland. Eoghan has also shared a stage with: Tom Jones, the Manic Street Preachers, Athlete, Hard Fi and Kate Nash among many others. Consistently selling-out in the Glasgow Music Scene, Eoghan has recently completed UK and American tours to rave reviews. Eoghan has also recently completed the full soundtrack to a new independent British Movie starring theatrical legends Virginia McKenna and Keith Michel, touted newcomer Vanessa Kirby and even a cameo from Strictly Come Dancing's Len Goodman. album : 'Steeltown - 30th Anniversary Edition'
release date - 29 September : www.bigcountry.co.uk
Following on from the critical and commercial success of the 2012 Deluxe Edition of “The Crossing” and last year’s 4 Disc Super Deluxe Edition of “Big
Country at The BBC”, we are proud to announce the 30th Anniversary release of a 2CD Deluxe Edition and 2LP set of the band’s Number 1 album, “Steeltown”. Produced by Steve Lillywhite at Abba’s Polar Studios in Stockholm, the album was Number 1 in many international territories and spawned 3 hit singles in the form of “East of Eden”, “Where The Rose Is Sown” and “Just A Shadow”. Both formats now also boast the single, “Wonderland” which was released between The Crossing and Steeltown but now finds its natural home on this 30th anniversary edition.
notes by respected Scottish journalist and lifelong fan, Tim Barr. Big Country was originally formed in 1981 by guitar playing founder members Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson both native of the band’s hometown Dunfermline in Scotland - sadly in December 2001, Stuart Adamson took his own life in Honolulu. In the 2010, Bruce Watson picked up the phone and asked Mike Peters to sing with Big Country in order to celebrate 30 years since the band was formed, Mike (a longstanding friend of Stuart’s who credits the words of ‘In A Big Country’ as literally inspiring him to ‘Stay Alive’ through two very public cancer battles), instinctively agreed and dates were booked. The band also being joined by Bruce Watson’s son Jamie on guitar as Big Country again sought solace in the music and the freedom to express their love and admiration for their departed friend Stuart Adamson (who’s usual space at the centre of the stage was left symbolically vacant). Now with the promise of a new era dawning for the band bassist Tony Butler has decided that his time in Big Country has come to a close with his place now being taken by another long standing friend of the Big Country family Derek Forbes (Simple Minds). Coming into 2014 Big Country have been joined by Simon Hough to perform vocal duties, he has fit in perfectly as the band continues its touring.
Disc Two of the 2CD Deluxe Edition now features the single A-Sides and B-Sides plus 7 Previously Unreleased Rough Mixes including 2 Work in Progress mixes of Wonderland recorded at Castlesounds Studios just outside of Edinburgh.
The band will be embarking on a World Tour later this year, including extensive dates in the US, and will be playing selected highlights from both Steeltown and The Crossing. You can next catch them in Scotland next at Midfest in Midlothian on 6 September and headlining the musical performances at the 'Bridge Party' celebrating the 50th birthday of the Forth Road Bridge on 13 September.

EMILIO LARGO
THE OXBOW LAKE BAND
Between New Year & Valentine

Boy Angus
Singer-Songwriter Patricia Morris is a classic storyteller in the finest Celtic Tradition. With a rare purity of tone and an impressive vocal range, her wider musical catalogue ranges from Gershwin, to Schubert, to Burns, but it is her Scottish and Irish roots she is most influenced and defined by as revealed in her songwriting. These are her latest offerings of Blues and Folk inspired songs.
After parting ways with former guitarist Joe Wyman, we took on board a new guitarist, Andrew Beveridge. The chemistry was instant and we began writing the follow up to our debut EP 'In Uniform We Divide'. Taking a more straight forward approach to song writing this time, we focused on melody and harmonies whilst still retaining elements of what sculpted the sound of 'IUWD'. Drawing on elements from bands like Oceansize, Arcane Roots and Fall of Troy, it is a further progression of our sound.

HOW TO SWIM
JAMES GILLESPIE
Fight Or Flight
Niagarama
Before I Die
The Hazy Shades debut EP, 'Fight Or Flight' is a statement of intent about rock n roll dreams and desires.
How to Swim is the brainchild of Scottish BAFTAwinning writer and composer Gregor Barclay. Although known for their expansively orchestrated recorded work and a similarly maximalist approach to the idea of band size, the group is currently operating as a lean sixpiece, comprising members of The Second Hand Marching Band, The Martial Arts and the now-defunct Mother and The Addicts. Their forthcoming sophomore full-length, Niagarama, is a concept album of sorts, exploring the loss of youth and how we process it.
James is an acoustic singer/ songwriter based in London. James brings a lot to his music - honest story telling from Folk, Pain and Passion from Blues, hooks from pop and all with an indie edge. James' live performance is engaging, honest and mesmerising. His personality is charismatic and contagious.

The tracks were written at various points in his life. His songs show a great deal of clarity and depth. DEATHCATS All Hail Deathcats Album vinyl Release Date: 9 June 'All Hail Deathcats' is the debut LP from Glasgow based trio, Deathcats. Side A contains what the band consider to be their pop numbers; short and sweet pop songs packed with melodies, sing-along choruses and soaked in reverb. Side B reveals their heavier elements; greatly influenced by long drives to shows on a strict audio diet of Thee Oh Sees and Black Sabbath. Coming in at just under 33 minutes, ‘All Hail Deathcats’ gives a very accurate representation of what the Glasgow trio have got to offer.
