Born To Be Wide returns to Edinburgh’s Electric Circus on Thursday 2 October with a modified format, which sees the evening begin with a live interview followed by a discussion panel in the second half. Additional speakers confirmed for the panel are Justine Ward from GR, whose roster includes Primal Scream, Texas and Baby Strange, and Björn Sandberg, who looks after Glasgow act Casual Sex. An additional speaker is expected to be announced prior the event. “Dee seldom does interviews, so this will be a rare opportunity to hear the story of the manager of one of the world's biggest rock bands,” says Furniss. “It will also be very interesting to contrast his experiences with those of Björn and Justine.” About Dee Bahl: After a stint playing bass for Glasgow band Godstar, Dee Bahl began managing Biffy Clyro in 1999, and has been instrumental in steering the Kilmarnock trio from local heroes to one of the world’s most successful rock acts. In 2009, his 1554 Management company, signed a co-management deal with Warner Music UK’s Nostromo. Furniss adds that the traditional role of music managers is constantly evolving to adapt to an ever-changing business, and the night aims to provide an insight into the different approaches to the job. Following the interview and panel, the speakers will play a selection of their favourite tracks.

They perform with traditional instruments including; accordion, mandolin and violin as well as guitars. Like many of the artists performing for Hit The Road, they have progressed through the Scottish Music Centre’s Music Plus+ youth project that provides one-to-one mentoring for participants. Through this initiative the duo were able to record their first songs and have performed at various festivals including the Music Plus+ stage at Belladrum Festival last month. The duo have also performed at Doune The Rabbit Hole in Stirling and play at other small festivals before the end of September including Live @ Troon and Bowfest in Inverary. Jacob Green commented, “Music Plus gave us both confidence and belief in what we were doing. Everything we said was listened to and we were given truthful and valuable advice that was specific to the music the two of us were trying to make. If we hadn't worked with Music Plus we definitely wouldn't be getting all the gigs or the festival slots we have lined up. Mike Vass Releases Dates For His Traditional Arts Commission, ‘In The Wake Of Neil Gunn’ In 1937, Neil Gunn quit his job at the Customs Office in Inverness to pursue his writing career full time. The first thing he did was to sell his house and buy a boat in the North of Skye. He spent a summer sailing Scotland's beautiful West Coast, seeking inspiration for his writing. The following year his account of the trip, Off in a Boat, was published. In May 2014, after a time recovering in hospital from a life-threatening illness, composer and multi-instrumentalist Mike Vass set off on his own voyage inspired by Neil Gunn's adventures as part of a new traditional arts commission sponsored by Creative Scotland. This October will see the touring of this commission and release of a new album. Named Composer of the Year in the 2012 Scots Trad Music Awards, Vass’s music has become known for its originality and inventive approach to the Scottish tradition. A long-term member of renowned Scottish band Malinky, Mike has also performed in the Paul McKenna Band, in a duo with sister Ali, with Gaelic singer Kathleen MacInnes, Scots singer Fiona Hunter and in the feted super group Fiddle Rendezvous. In 2013, he experienced a set-back when he was diagnosed with Lyme's disease and was obliged to spend a prolonged period of time in hospital. His father brought him Gunn's book Off in a Boat to read, and the idea for the project was sparked. Says Mike: “I’d suffered a life threatening illness called Neuroborreliosis - late stage Lyme’s disease that affects the central nervous system. I found Gunn’s book utterly inspirational and immediately started planning my own version of the trip.” A lifelong passion for sailing fuelled the development of the project which enabled Vass to find his own creative inspiration in Gunn's coastal route. In May this year, having won the support of Enterprise Music Scotland, Creative Scotland, Calmac Ferries and Gunn's publishers House of Lochar, Mike and a small crew set off in his father’s 35’ sailing boat from Portree on the Isle of Skye voyaging to the Eigg, Arisaig, Mull, Iona, Oban, Kentallen, Fort William and

back up the Caledonian Canal to his hometown Nairn. He revisited the same coastal communities as Gunn and performed a series of concerts with guest musicians, including one at Iona Abbey.

Since the voyage Mike has worked hard in the studio to compose and record a new suite of music inspired by the journey and featuring He says: “Making music on board recorded samples collected on the and watching the stunning coastline way (from flapping flags to a diesel of Scotland slip by from one of the inboard). The tour will revisit some of the areas most important to Gunn: Inverness, where he had lived; Caithness, where he was born; and Skye and Oban which were landmarks on the original voyage. Mike himself spent a week moored in Oban where he worked with the local Fèis and performed in nearby Kentallen. Mike is also looking forward to revisiting The Byre Theatre in St Andrews at the start of the tour. This is one of the first events to take place in the Byre since the reopening of the theatre under the management of the University of St Andrews, and demonstrates the University’s commitment to using the Byre to

promote music of all genres as well as professional, community and student drama. ‘Mike Vass - In the Wake of Neil Gunn’ will be released on the 20 October 2014 on Unroofed Records, and a preview track has been released as well as downloads of sheet music transcribed by Mike during a research period at the School of Scottish Studies before the May voyage. www.inthewakeofneilgunn.com a blog about the project including diaries from the trip and videos

BIG COUNTRY - 'STEELTOWN' : 30th Anniversary Tour Scottish Tour : October+November : www.bigcountry.co.uk TICKETS! @ http://www.bigcountry.co.uk/gigs/ Iconic Scottish rock band Big Country formed in Dunfermline in 1981 and their second album ‘Steeltown’ was released in 1984, debuting at Number 1 in the UK. Although the height of the band's popularity was in the early 1980s, it has retained a cult following ever since. The band's music was most recognisable for the sounds it infused with Scottish folk and martial music styles, as well as for playing and engineering their guitar driven sound to evoke the inspirational spirit of bagpipes, fiddles and other traditional folk instruments. Now Big Country are reformed and touring the UK to promote the re-release of 'Steeltown' ‘Steeltown’ was recorded at ABBA's Polar Studios in Stockholm with Steve Lillywhite producing. Bruce Watson remembers the time very well, amid the nationwide strife back in the UK, fully in the grip of the Miners Strike: “We started work on Steeltown back in June 1984 at Abba’s studio. We worked alongside Steve in Studio One as Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber worked on ‘Chess’ next door in Studio Two. Stockholm felt like the most expensive place on earth – it’s as if we were on a different planet to how things were back home – my Dad was a miner, so what we did

was knuckle down to hard work for six weeks”. BIG COUNTRY continue to look beyond the next horizon in 2014, with Mike Peters dedicating his efforts full-time towards the support of the 30th Anniversary of The Alarm’s Declaration, Big Country have been joined by Simon Hough to perform vocal duties. He has fit in perfectly as the band continues its touring which will continue throughout the year as Big Country will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the release of the album, Steeltown with the Steeltown Tour this autumn. The band in 2014 are – BRUCE WATSON (guitars/vocals); MARK BRZEZICKI (drums, vocals); JAMIE WATSON (guitars/vocals) and former SIMPLE MINDS’ bassist/vocalist , DEREK FORBES – will be augmented on stage by SIMON HOUGH exfront man for DENNY LAINE (WINGS), ERIC BELL (THIN LIZZY) etc. www.bigcountry.co.uk https://twitter.com/bigcountryuk www.facebook.com/inabigcountry

How the land and our history shapes our music Dalmellington - 10 October-31 January : New Galloway / February : www.thedrovingproject.org

A new project which investigates the connection of music to the land has seen a fiddle player become a cattle drover for the day. Nick Jenkins, from the Lorraine Macauley band, joined a photographer, filmmaker and writer to walk with real life cattle across an ancient drovers way as part of The Droving Project. Nick has composed a fiddle piece inspired by the walk across Galloway and East Ayrshire. The piece features in the film and has also been produced into a stand alone track featuring recordings of the cattle. Gareth Griffiths, a music producer based in Glasgow, created the music piece from Nick's composition and sound designer Pete Smith's soundscape. The result is a deep, dark, experimental mulchy sound of cows eating, rain falling and the rhythm of hooves and boots all mixed up with the plaintive fiddle - bringing a significant aspect of Scotland's history into the contemporary age. The music will feature in the exhibition at the Doon Valley Museum. The story so far ..... This August three cows, a filmmaker, a photographer, a sound artist, a musician and a writer walked along an ancient drovers’ track across the regional border from Galloway to Bellsbank town in East Ayrshire. The walk retraced a journey that people have made with their cattle for hundreds of years.

In addition, for part of the route, the cattle had to be loaded onto a cattle truck, supplied by third generation cattle haulage company WH Mcwilliam and Co, and transported in the wagon over the next two farms.

The complete drove with cattle was able to walk the last part of the route however, through deciduous forestry past Bellsbank council estate towards town. Drovers and their cattle travelling The Droving Project is a collaborative arts north, to market in Ayr or further, would have project which addresses the ancient cattle passed this way and stopped at the now closed culture of Scotland by following one of the many Black Bull Inn in Dalmellington. drovers’ pathways that cross this country. In an upland landscape such as People in Scotland have walked with cattle for Galloway, where growing crops on high ground over a thousand years. Things have changed. Current legislation made a re-creation of this journey much more complicated than it used to be. The route crosses five different farms with grazing sheep. As bringing cattle onto a working livestock farm imposes a thirteen-day standstill of all animals, the cows would have been unable to walk the seven-mile route in less than eight weeks. As a result, walkers set out from Knockengorroch cowless, and met up with the cows three miles into the route, on a neighbouring farm, where they had been moved thirteen days previously.

The project draws parallels with people in many other parts of the world who still walk with their cattle, camels, reindeer or yaks, to reach fresh pastures or trade. Herdspeople have been lauded for their low impact on the environment, their creative thinking and innovative approach to environmental challenges. The people in Scotland, and particularly in upland areas, have also lived for many hundreds of years as partial nomadic herdsmen, a section of social history often forgotten.

Towns such as Bellsbank that lost the mainstay of their livelihood with the closure of the coalmines are common in many areas in Scotland. Before the industrial revolution people in these areas farmed and kept livestock. The industrial age is over so what is next for towns in rural areas like these? Many people are enjoying ‘returning to the land’ whilst worldwide many are flocking to urban areas. Questions over intensive farming and the benefits of local and organic produce are much discussed. The Droving Project gently nudges at these issues and suggests that a human relationship with these large mammals and a slower way of life may not be backward but actually beneficial for our psyche and the health of the natural environment. It also celebrates the upland landscape. Whether you believe that intensive farming is necessary on a global scale or not, upland landscapes have always been less accessible to cultivate and often impossible to intensively farm. Hardy creatures that can exist in this environment are invaluable. The Droving Project, funded by Creative Scotland, features award winning photographer Alice Myers, film producer Stevie Whiteford, writer Catrina Davies, Nick Jenkins of the Lorraine Macauley Band and sound artist Pete Smith. The cows came from Knockengorroch farm and the project is supported by Knockengorroch CIC, which runs the annual World Ceilidh Music festival in May. www. knockengorroch.org.uk The next few weeks will be spent writing, composing and editing, to create the story of the event, the walk and the cattle culture of Scotland. The results will be exhibited, screened and performed The exhibition will run from 10 October 2014 to 31 January 2014 at the Doon Valley Museum in Dalmellington (open Wednesday to Saturday) before moving to the Catstrand in New Galloway in February 2015, it will then tour further a-field.

Scotland’s New Music Ensemble Launched this month is Alchemy, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra's (RSNO) new contemporary music ensemble to challenge the nature of conductor, performer and composer. Developed in conjunction with composer/ conductor Peter Wiegold the ensemble has a mission to explore new works, methods of performance, improvisation and collaboration. In its first year RSNO Alchemy will give three performances, the first was held at Glasgow's Tramway on 10 September. The evening’s theme took its inspiration from 20th century Italian writer Italo Calvino’s 1972 novel Invisible Cities, which depicts over fifty views of the city of Venice, as described by Italian merchant traveller Marco Polo to Mongol emperor Kublai Khan. RSNO Alchemy took its source material from one-page scores by James MacMillan, John Woolrich, Peter Wiegold and Aidan O’Rourke amongst others, interspersed with narrated extracts from Calvino’s book, read by Deacon Blue’s Lorraine McIntosh. album : 'The Shouting Cave'

release date - out now : Buy @ http://turningplates.bigcartel.com/

The Shouting Cave is a concept album that explores the effect of the Internet on society. The band argue that the Internet is the purest reflection of humanity, a world built entirely of our own thoughts, emotions and desires - “a sea to float our dreams”, as described in the album track 'The Human Isle'. What do we see in that reflection? Have we stopped to think? The album explores these questions by portraying the Internet as a new wilderness into which we are born, telling individual stories within the overarching theme.

Bon Iver and Sufjan Stevens. The message of The Shouting Cave is laid bare in the final two tracks of the album; the gloriously dark track ‘The Human Isle’ describes a desolate world which then blossoms into the culminating track ‘Things Grow’, with its unyielding chant “Things grow, Things grow legs and run wild”. Each track on The Shouting Cave is strong enough to stand on its own merit, but listened to in its entirety the album irresistibly comes to life. The Vinyl District previously premiered 'Wild Roots' and the atmospheric video that

accompanied it. You can also stream and download the band's first free album track 'Falling Lives' via the ABoF SoundCloud page and watch the beautifully choreographed video for the track on the Turning Plates YouTube channel. The Shouting Cave is out now, part funded by Creative Scotland.

www.turningplates.co.uk www.facebook.com/turningplates www.twitter.com/turningplates

Tracks such as ‘Falling Lives’ and ‘Wild Roots’ showcase the band’s cinematic style through delicate but powerful soundscapes, reminiscent of Sigur Ros and Four Tet, while ‘Havoc’ and ‘Animals’ lift the tempo, focusing on intertwining melodies and heartfelt vocal lines in the style of

SKERRYVORE :

album : 'Chasing The Sun'

release date - out now : http://store.skerryvore.com/

INSPIRED by sunfilled summers spent on Tiree that were the springboard for the band forming, ‘Chasing the Sun’ is the fifth and arguably most mature sounding album yet from multi award winning Skerryvore.

For the band’s loyal followers meanwhile, the rousing ‘You Don’t Know’, ‘Walk With Me’ and instrumentals ‘The Rut’ and ‘Moonraker’ are unmistakably Skerryvore in their ability to get heads nodding and toes tapping.

Also featured on ‘Chasing the Sun’ is the band’s first international collaboration with platinum award winning producer Chris Kess (The Dave Matthews Band) on ‘Blown Away’ and ‘By Your Side’.

Written between Roddy Hart’s studio at Film City Glasgow and The Cottage in Loch Fyne, ‘Chasing The Sun’ was recorded at Castlesound Studios in Edinburgh (Mark Knopfler, REM and The Proclaimers). There, Alec Dalglish (songwriter, vocals, guitars and mandolin), Martin Gillespie (bagpipes and whistles), Daniel Gillespie (accordion), Fraser West (drums and percussion), Craig Espie (fiddle) and new band member Jodie Bremaneson (bass) reunited with producer Alan Scobie (keyboards) to create the next chapter in the Skerryvore success story.

To celebrate the release of ‘Chasing the Sun’, Skerryvore are embarking on an international tour spanning four continents and 14 countries, including their biggest US tour to date and a debut performance in Mumbai, India. The band will also be performing alongside Steve Earle, Runrig and Julie Fowlis at the 40th Anniversary Tonder Festival, which will be broadcast throughout Scandinavia.

From the assured determination of ‘Can You Hear Us?’ and steadfast self-belief of ‘Here I Am’, to the life-is-short urgency of ‘We Can Run’ and wistful reflection of ‘You Were My Friend’, this is an album with all the hallmarks of a band that has lived, learned and played music together for close to 10 years now.

JAMES GILLESPIE

UNKLE BOB

Niagarama

Before I Die

It's Not Enough

How to Swim is the brainchild of Scottish BAFTAwinning writer and composer Gregor Barclay. Although known for their expansively orchestrated recorded work and a similarly maximalist approach to the idea of band size, the group is currently operating as a lean sixpiece, comprising members of The Second Hand Marching Band, The Martial Arts and the now-defunct Mother and The Addicts. Their forthcoming sophomore full-length, Niagarama, is a concept album of sorts, exploring the loss of youth and how we process it.

James is an acoustic singer/ songwriter based in London. James brings a lot to his music - honest story telling from Folk, Pain and Passion from Blues, hooks from pop and all with an indie edge. James' live performance is engaging, honest and mesmerising. His personality is charismatic and contagious.

'It’s Not Enough' conjures up the atmosphere of a sundrenched road-trip on America’s Pacific Coast Highway, with its slight air of melancholy, and gentle dappled sunlight that’s all the more precious because it feels so transitory.
