Master Drummer Masaaki Kurumaya Sensei comes to Scotland Regarded as one of the top Taiko drum masters in Japan, Masaaki Kurumaya Sensei is making a rare visit to the UK to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of his special connection with Scotland’s Taiko group Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers with a one-off performance at the Glasgow King’s Theatre on Sunday 28 October at 7.30pm. Masaaki Kurumaya Sensei, the master of the Hokuriku style of Taiko, is coming to the UK to perform a special one-off concert in Glasgow. He will be performing as special guest at a concert by Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers, the first and only professional touring Taiko drum group in Europe, based right here in central Scotland. The concert celebrates the 20th anniversary of the special connection between Sensei and student, and will be the only UK appearance of this highly respected master. Twenty years ago, Neil Mackie and Miyuki Williams travelled to Japan and encountered the art-form of Taiko drumming in a fateful meeting with Kurumaya Sensei which would change their lives forever. After two years of intensive training with Kurumaya Sensei in Fukui, they returned to the UK to form Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers in 1994, which has grown and developed into a professional touring ensemble, pioneering the art-form on this continent. See www.taiko.co.uk for more information. The group are currently on the road, performing a 25-date concert tour around major venues throughout the UK, culminating in the special concert with Kurumaya Sensei at the Glasgow King’s. Masaaki Kurumaya is renowned for his powerful playing style, flowing movement and jazz-influenced rhythms, his performing career spanning the last 40 years. He led the ground-breaking “Hibiki Daiko” drummers from Fukui who pioneered a modern re-invention of the traditional improvised style of playing. He is a magnetic presence on-stage, and a master at directing “KI” energy in his playing. His razor-sharp precision and focussed intensity is truly spellbinding. The concert is set to be a truly extraordinary experience, not to be repeated! GIGnotes: Tickets £22/ £15 : box office 0844 871 7648 : Glasgow King’s Theatre : 28 October : 7.30pm.

The 2nd solo album by former Astrid frontman Willie Campbell under the name The Open Day Rotation. This album saw Willie assembling a lush 15-piece band as a vehicle for his masterful pop songwriting-ten great tracks
Having spent the last six months playing festivals and venues across Europe, East Loch Lomond-based alt.blues musician Dave Arcari comes home to play a local show at Buchanan Memorial Hall, Milton of Buchanan, by Drymen on Saturday 3 November. He’ll be joined by Worcester-based duo BabaJack who complete the double-bill line-up.
THULA BORAH
“It’s really cool that my pals BabaJack are able to come up to join me for this gig,” says Arcari. “We’ve done shows and festivals together down south and we’ve been desperate to get them up here. Becky – singer and percussionist – has just picked up a British Blues Award for her skills and they’re creating a real buzz on the circuit. Folks here are gonna love them.”
www.facebook.com/thulaborah 4-piece Thula Borah's sound fuses post and alternative rock with ambient and acoustic textures, the band shy away from pigeon holing themselves citing an eclectic array of of influences and this is their ep Live Secretly
Arcari has been touring to promote his latest album – Nobody’s Fool – released on French label Dixiefrog Records in March. While on tour in Europe he managed to find time to record a new album at Sonic Pump, Helsinki with bass player Juuso Haapasalo and drummer Honey Aaltonen, collectively known as the Hellsinki Hellraisers. The album is scheduled for release (CD, vinyl and download) on Finnish label, Blue North, early next year (2013).
SESSION A9
Arcari has shared the stage with major artists including country/Americana legend Steve Earle, the mighty Alabama 3, Seasick Steve, Toby Keith and veteran blues-rocker Robin Trower.

A regular at UK and European festivals, Arcari cites recent highlights as Glastonbury; Moulin Blues Festival in Holland; Belgium’s Peer Festival (alongside Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa and Steve Winwood); BluesAlive in the Czech Republic and Poland. Headline shows in Finland, Estonia, Germany and Ireland as well as across the UK continue to take Arcari and his music to a wider audience beyond the confines of any specific genre. Showcased over seven CD releases to date, Dave Arcari’s National guitar-driven alt.blues owes as much to trash country, punk and rockabilly as it does pre-war Delta blues. COAST
new single 'Believe' by Fiona Elcoat
Having kept a beady eye on Coast since they burst onto the Scottish scene in 2009 with an appearance on the Danny Kyle Open Stage at Celtic Connections, I have enjoyed watching their progression under the management of Runrig drummer, Iain Bayne. Coast have in a relatively short space of time expanded their audience to all corners of the UK and beyond, having played successful tours and concerts in Denmark, Norway and Germany. A support slot for Canadian superstar Bryan Adams in front of a 14,000 strong audience in Cologne, and slots at the prestigious Tonder Festival in Denmark in 2010 and 2011 were high points of the band's career to date, with plenty more to come. With Iain's guidance they have developed into a slick, professional outfit, having distribution deals both here and abroad and they continue to make new fans wherever they travel. The debut album from the band, simply entitled "Coast", released in 2009, made waves wherever it was played and folk spoke of the new exciting band on the block. Celtic Connections was followed by many more gigs, festivals and radio play, taking the band to new heights every day. When the much anticipated second offering "The Turning Stone" appeared in the stores, a new level of excitement upped the game and both band and management team buckled down to the serious hard work of promoting the band in new areas. The audience for Coast continues to grow and who knows where they will end up. They are a band sometimes wrongly pigeon holed into the "Celtic Rock" genre but they play a brand of rock with Celtic undertones which can fit comfortably anywhere. There were some sceptics in the beginning making comments that they were trying to be a "Runrig Tribute" band, but this cannot be further from the truth. Frontman Paul Eastham is a classically trained pianist and a hugely talented lyricist and some may know he is also a very fine producer, having produced and recorded the likes of Duffy (in the days before she was Duffy)!, Thus the band are capable of creating their own style, their own music and this they do and they do it very well. The new single 'Believe' which has an added bonus of two extra tracks - The Caller (Radio Edit), from The Turning Stone and Keep Loving from the debut album - has been eagerly anticipated for some time, with the dedicated band of Coast followers assisting the promotion, and it is now available on CD Baby and i Tunes for download. It has been selling well and 'Believe' will be one of the tracks included on the new forthcoming album, Long way Home due for release in Spring 2013. 'Believe' has an inspirational feel good factor and within it there are tones of Big Country (who the band state as being one of their influences), but it is distinctively Coast! The band are in fine form and I feel they are ready to hit the big time and I sincerely hope Believe will be the one to push them there. Believe has already been receiving significant airplay on various radio stations and press releases are being distributed and I "believe" this single can develop into a major hit for the band. Believe is already available on CD Baby and i Tunes and the release date for the physical CD will be 29th October.

TEN SCOTS SUPPORTING JOAN ARMATRADING TOUR Andrew Brand : Craig Jeffrey : Adriana Spina : Jamie Flett : Benny Tetteh-Lartey : Anthony McIntyre : Ross Buchanan : Mari Campbell : Jamie McGeechan aka Little Fire : Jo McCafferty
Joan Armatrading is recognised as one of the World's leading singers, songwriters and guitarists. Three times Grammy nominated, Two times Brit Award nominee, Gold Badge and Ivor Novella winner, in a career lasting 40 years Joan has supported local talent throughout. On her tours around the world Joan has always tried to get a local artist on to the bill in the many different cities she performs in. In early 2011 Joan started a search for a regional singer songwriter to open the show in their home town or city on her 2012 UK and Ireland tour. Literally hundreds of regional up and coming singersongwriters sent in demo tracks to be considered for the tour dates and it really was a mammoth task choosing the final 56, the quality was simply astounding. By late 2011 the final 56 had been chosen. As far as possible each singer songwriter on the tour will represent their local area but in some cases, especially where the quality was very high and it was difficult to choose a single act, some were offered the chance to play in a different location. I'm sure that anyone attending one of the shows on the 2012 Joan Armatrading UK and Ireland tour will be just as delighted as Joan was to hear what superbly talented yet undiscovered singer songwriters the UK and Ireland possess. Indeed one participant, Lucy Spraggan who was picked in 2011, is currently riding high on the current 2012 series of 'X Factor'.
Andrew Brand, a 19 year old acoustic singer/songwriter from Aberdeen, supported Joan at her tour opening Fleetwood concert in September
Chris Wood is Joan's Special Guest on her 2012 UK tour but at each venue on the 56 date tour a local artist will perform for 15 minutes before he appears. These 56 singer/songwriters will not only get to perform on the night in their home town, or one of the other venues if that's not possible, but will also have a track featured on a special three CD package that will be available for sale at all the venues on the tour. Released on the Hypertension record label, the CD package will feature a different song by each of the 56 chosen artists and is accompanied by a 24 page booklet. This will be a superb souvenir of the tour. The Local Talent website contains all the artists names, short biogs and where they are performing along with the very latest news - www. localtalent-uk.com You can also post your comments on the LocalTalent Facebook page: www.facebook.com/jalocaltalent

Shetland Arts announces line-up for official opening season at Mareel Shetland Arts is delighted to announce the line-up for Mareel’s official opening season, which runs from October to December this year. Mareel is the new music, cinema and education facility on Lerwick's waterfront, with an auditorium, cinema, cafe bar, recording studio, multi media suite, rehearsal rooms, education areas and a 2nd screen/ lecture theatre Acts already announced for kicking off Opening Season include The Wonderful World of Cerys Matthews, the Shetland Community Orchestra, and Slam. The following three months will see a diverse range of acts, both visiting and local. Highlights include Vic Galloway Presents, which is the first in a series of regular music showcase concerts hosted by BBC Radio 1 & Radio Scotland DJ Vic Galloway, followed by a DJ set by the man himself, The Shetland Guitar Festival with headliners Stuart McCallym and Aziz Ibrahim, the return of DJ Kutski, a foot-stomping performance by Danish folk band Himmerland, Scottish duo Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells, and of course, the ever popular Happy Mondays. Plans are taking shape for celebrations over the weekend of 16 – 18 November to mark the moment of Mareel’s Opening. Popular Scottish indieband, Aberfeldy - described by The Scotsman as “one of the most winningly diverse bands to emerge in recent years” - will entertain audiences on the Friday night with support from singer-songwriter Chris Bradley, and Saturday will see the culmination of a week-long celebration linking Mareel with musicians from all over Shetland as well as from across the ocean. Shetland Meets Appalachia – an exploration of our common musical roots features American fiddler, banjo player, guitarist, and singer Bruce Molsky alongside special Shetland guests including Gary Peterson, Maurice Henderson, Maggie Adamson, Sheila Henderson, Brian Nicholson, the Cullivoe Fiddlers, the Heritage Fiddlers, Lynda Anderson, and more. Workshops will take place all week in schools across Shetland, as well as a Saturday workshop in Mareel, culminating in concerts on Thursday 15 in Muckle Roe, Friday 16 in Cullivoe, and finally, Saturday 17 in Mareel. Sunday 18 will see Dougie MacLean, Scotland’s pre-eminent singer-songwriter, take to the stage. Perhaps his most famous composition is the near anthemic Caledonia – a song that has been covered by over 200 artists world-wide, including the likes of Ronan Keating, Frankie Miller, Paolo Nutini and Amy MacDonald. The song has even had a whisky named in its honour. But Dougie is most certainly not a one-song-wonder – a fact supported by the many gold discs and other international awards and accolades he has collected throughout his career. Dougie tours globally on a regular basis, selling out large concerts the world over including venue’s such as New York’s famed Carnegie Hall. He was recently awarded an OBE for his contribution to music in the New Year’s Honours List. Director of Shetland Arts, Gwilym Gibbons, said: “We are absolutely delighted to announce such a packed programme of high-quality events for Official Opening Season at Mareel. We have had a huge amount of interest so far and we expect that things will only get busier in the run up to the festive season.” Also during Opening Season, Shetland Arts will be launching Mareel’s much-anticipated cinema promotions – Gold & Silver Cards, Family & Friends Discount, and Ten4Nine. As a special Opening Season promotion Mareel will be offering customers a one-time only Gold/Silver Card Taster Package. This is a three month package allowing customers to see how the Mareel Gold or Silver Card fits their lifestyle, without having to commit to a full 12 month contract straight away. Customers pay for three months up front (£45 for the Gold Card, £30 for the Silver Card) and receive use of their card for three months from the date of that payment (this could be any time from October to December). After three months Shetland Arts will get in touch to see if they want to commit to the full 12 month contract. The Gold Card gives customers access to unlimited film at Mareel for just £15 a month. The Silver Card gives customers access to unlimited off-peak film at Mareel for £10 a month. A valid Gold Card entitles customers to one seat for any 2D film screening, subject to availability and one seat for any 3D film screening at a significantly discounted rate (£1 per screening, glasses must be purchased separately or brought to screening, glasses cost £1). RUNRIG Inverness by Ealasaid MacAlister
Runrig have habit of bringing rain to the banks of the Ness, the day of their show in Drumnadrochit back in 2007 saw the highest rainfall in the area for decades, and while it isn’t as bad today Inverness is decidedly dreich. This doesn’t stop a crowd of people from as far afield as Norway and Germany queuing in the rain long before the gates open. Runrig have been on a lengthy break and the devotion of these fans show how glad people are to have them back again thanks to Inverness based CK Concerts & Events. Thankfully by the time Runrig take to the stage at half past eight the rain has stopped and will stay off until after the two hour set. Before this we had ran a competition between us to guess the first song. I had gone for Year of The Flood on account of the rain but it begins with Stamping Ground. Me losing the competition aside it was a perfect song to begin the night as the Highlands have often been home for Runrig and they have always been well received here. Singer Bruce Guthro begins by acknowledging the rain, “Runrig comes the Highlands, the rain falls down again. With your raincoats and your wellies on, you’ve come to gather with the band” he ad libs. After a bit of a slow start things finally get going with News From Heaven which is rarely brought out at live shows but it’s inclusion tonight delights the audience and really gets the party started. The band seem happy to be back and delighted that this show is a sell out with Bruce Guthro repeatedly thanking the crowd for coming and supporting them. The 8,000 strong audience are more than happy to do this and to join in with the words to almost every song. Always true to their island and Gaelic roots there are several Gaelic songs in the set list tonight with An Toll dubh and Croc na Feille being played one after the other. Fan favourite The Greatest Flame was performed very well by the most recent addition to the band keyboard player Brian Hurran. After this the band really get energised and the crowd are urged to “Get this going” by Bruce Guthro. As they go through an accordion led Protect and Survive and An Sabhal aig Niall which has the by now familiar to fans drumming interlude at the end. The band finish their main set with Alba and Every River which is joined in with by absolutely everyone to create a bit of a magic moment. Bruce Guthro is soon persuaded back on stage by a crowd cheering and clapping for one more tune. After musing that he has been with the band for almost fifteen years and that “It’s been interesting watching us grow old together” he sings Hearts of Olden Glory with a crowd of over 8,000 joining him in the kind of singalong that Runrig do so well. The rest of the band rejoin him for an encore of Clash of the Ash, Pride of the Summer and Loch Lomond and ending, all too quickly, with a brand new song which is aptly named We Will Sing. Next year it will be forty years since the Run Rig Dance band were formed by Calum and Rory Macdonald and since then they have been a constant in Scottish music. Runrig continue to prove time and time again that they have the talent and presence to write and perform fantastic songs and delight fans all over the world. It’s the kind of staying power that most bands in this increasingly disposable music industry can only dream of. Runrig fans old and young and from all over the world wait to see what this anniversary might bring.

'New Focus' launch on Whirlwind Recordings Glasgow based Saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski joins forces with fellow Scottish compatriot pianist/arranger Euan Stevenson in launching their award winning, genre-bending musical adventure 'New Focus' on Whirlwind Recordings Ltd. Featuring a unique amalgamation of classical string quartet meets jazz quartet plus harp, 'New Focus' showcases a cinematic soundscape of through-composed melodies meeting cutting edge improvisation, drawing upon influences from across the musical spectrum. This hefty nine-piece ensemble excitedly features The Glasgow String Quartet, (comprising some of the finest virtuosos from The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and Scotland's leading string quartet), alongside Stevenson on piano leading the first call drum and bass team of Alyn Cosker (drums) and Michael Janisch (bass), Wiszniewski at the helm on saxophones, and Alina Bzhezhinska on harp. Stevenson's tight knit arrangements offer concise, pleasing trajectories, preserving the original sentiment of each composition, enriching them with ever changing soundscapes of strings and harp. Wiszniewski's tone (capable of sounding as sweet as Getz or as plaintive as Coltrane) tells parables of Polish ancestry while the arranger's own crystalline piano laments for pit closures in a northern mining town. A powerhouse rhythm team (Michael Janisch, Alyn Cosker) provides a counterfoil, never allowing the music to become sentimental. This is music at its resourceful best; borrowing the harmonies and sonorities of the classical world, the tone poetry of Scottish Folk, the directness of pop, and all mixed with the bustling edginess of jazz rhythms and improvisation. Duke Ellington famously quipped that there were only two categories of music - good and bad. New Focus most definitely belongs to the former. Following multiple 5-Star accolades for its inaugural performance at the 2011 Edinburgh International Jazz Festival,'New Focus' launches on NOV. 5 2012 worldwide with full tour support watch New Focus : http://youtu.be/tszK3VDr-qQ www.euanstevenson.com
