My setting of Be Thou My Vision for choir and congregation includes the first verse of the original Old Irish text, Rop tú mo baile. This beautiful poem may have been written as early as the 6th century and is often attributed to Saint Dallán Forgaill. For assistance with pronunciation, there is an excellent recording of Gareth Hughes (licensed through Creative Commons) singing the original lyrics to the tune SLANE which can be downloaded from MusicSpoke.com. I've used the opening words of the poem as a choral introduction and coda, which should morph into overtone singing accompanying the soprano solo. The directions in the score indicate the specific vowels the choir should sing to produce these sounds. In general, the vowels should be more nasal, bright, and very focused. I encourage choirs to experiment till the "whistle tones" appear when the vowels are manipulated. The soloist will sing the lines of the first verse of Rop tú mo baile between each English verse in a "keening" style (notice that the keen is a fragment of the hymn tune). Feel free to add tasteful vocal ornamentation similar to that in the flute part. The setting was intended to be sung with unison congregational participation on every verse, but it may certainly be sung as a stand-alone choral work. -Timothy Michael Powell, composer
