The term “smoothing iron” comes from the earlier centuries of smoothing out wrinkles in clothing after washing, by pressing them with a heavy iron, usually heated on a wood or coal stove or on a hearth. This 19th-Century English folksong works its way through the whole week, beginning on the traditional Monday wash day, describing one chore of a lovely washermaiden for each day. It is said to come from the area around Somerset, and was probably first published by the British musicologist Cecil Sharp (1859-1924), who also noted its qualities as a nursery rhyme. In a more recent context, a little excerpt was sung by Mr. Carson (while polishing silver) in an episode of the period television drama. “Downton Abbey,” perhaps demonstrating the song’s popularity among the working class. “Dashing Away With A Smoothing Iron” was arranged for and premiered by the Samford University Chorale of Birmingham, Alabama, and later recorded by the Samford University A Cappella Choir, Barbara Shinn, pianist.

For three and a half decades Timothy Paul Banks taught conducting, choral literature, and voice courses at Samford University in Birmingham Alabama. Dr. Banks also pursued an active performance schedule as a conductor of five choral ensembles at Samford, including the Samford University A Cappella Choir, in addition to a yearly schedule of performances in choral-orchestral music, opera and music theatre. After this long and fruitful collegiate career, Tim Banks now continues as a free-lance conductor, composer/arranger, singer, musicologist, teacher and musical entrepreneur.
