Oklahoman Nathan Jones (b. 1983) is a composer of art music published by Walton Music, GIA Publications, Southern Music Company and G. Schirmer. A devoted admirer of the beauty and deep emotional connection of the human voice, Nathan enjoys working with poetry. His choral music has been performed in Europe, Southeast Asia and throughout the United States. The American Record Guide has described his music as a “…feast of succulent modern harmonies." Frequently commissioned by choirs and wind ensembles of all abilities, Nathan’s style is earnest, melodic, and defined by elegant simplicity. His choral work, I would live in your love, was recorded by The Westminster Choir under the direction of Joe Miller and is commercially available.

In the firelight In the firelight The fire upon the hearth is low,  And there is stillness everywhere,  And, like wing'd spirits, here and there  The firelight shadows fluttering go.  And as the shadows round me creep,  A childish treble breaks the gloom,  And softly from a further room  Comes: "Now I lay me down to sleep." And, somehow, with that little pray'r  And that sweet treble in my ears,  My thought goes back to distant years,  And lingers with a dear one there:  And as I hear my child's amen,  My mother's faith comes back to me—  Crouched at her side I seem to be,  And mother holds my hands again. Oh, for an hour in that dear place—  Oh, for the peace of that dear time—  Oh, for that childish trust sublime—  Oh, for a glimpse of mother's face!  Yet, as the shadows round me creep,  I do not seem to be alone—  Sweet magic of that treble tone  And "Now I lay me down to sleep!” —Eugene Field (1850-1895)

from the composer— In the firelight, an unabashedly sentimental piece, evokes the comforts of home, childhood, and a loving family with lush, beautiful imagery. The piece was commissioned by the East Carolina University ACDA Chapter and premiered by the ECU Chamber Singers in 2014, with Andrew Crane conducting. This piece is perfect for most collegiate programs and large or accomplished high school programs. This music should be treated as an ensemble “reading” of the poem. Allow the poem to influence choices concerning tempo, dynamic, and rhythmic flexibility.
