Program Notes My Sun and Song and Spring is a highly colorful, madrigalian setting of a sonnet by Sara Teasdale, one of my all-time favorite poets. It compares the author's newfound love to the coming of spring; a change that is welcomed and celebrated through song, e.g: “Great spring came singing upward from the south.” Music, words, and love sprout and grow like nature, bubbling up like a song bursting forth, e.g: “Your words like winged seeds took root and grew. And all the world caught music from your mouth.” Using melodies built on a whole tone scale, more than a couple of complex harmonic shifts, and various rhythmic patterns of 2s against 3s, I hope to match the richness of this gorgeous text and illustrate the poet's joy of finding her “sun and song and spring.” I also emply some extended vocal techniques (such as whispering, speaking, humming, and glissandi) which work to further enhance the text, and bring it to life. —EFD Full Text As kings, seeing their lives about to pass, Take off the heavy ermine and the crown, So had the trees that autumn-time laid down Their golden garments on the dying grass, When I, who watched the seasons in the glass Of my own thoughts, saw all the autumn's brown Leap into life and wear a sunny gown Of leafage fresh as happy April has. Great spring came singing upward from the south; For in my heart, far carried on the wind, Your words like winged seeds took root and grew, And all the world caught music from your mouth; I saw the light as one who had been blind, And knew my sun and song and spring were you. —Sara Teasdale (1911)

* : Each singer should close to the voiceless "s" consonant at their own time, independent of others around them, some time after beat three and hold it until the downbeat. However, one singer in each part (i.e. one soprano and two altos) must hold out the vowel for its full value so that the notated pitches are always present.
