"Song of Myself" was commissioned for the MacArthur High School choral program's 2024 SWACDA performance. The work takes textual quotations from Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" and arranges them in a musical collage celebrating the interconnectedness of all things and people. In a world that is filled with strife and discord, "Song of Myself" uses polyphonic textures, metric modulation, and modal melodies to illustrate how seemingly disparate or conflicting ideas can not only coexist, but do so in a way that is beautiful. Ultimately, this is a work celebrating humanity and the earth as innately divine, and therefore good and worthy of respect.
The packet includes a full conductor's score, as well as a piano/vocal score and instrumental parts for 2 cellos and percussion (1 player).
