The first section (bars 2–13) may be sung twice, the first time with the melody sung solo (in free time) with a drone on the tonic in the alto and mezzosoprano parts (mezzo at the fifth ad lib.), with an overtone-rich sound. Tralling: Norwegian folk-style singing as song without words inspired by traditional fiddle playing. The singers are free to find their individual interpretations. Sing syllables which enhance forward movement, for instance la-da-ri-dam / ru-a-ra-dn-de-i-å / dam-da-ru-a-dn-då. Sing the same kind of syllables for longer notes as well. Timbre: Direct and rich in overtones combined with a warm expression. The melodies should be sung non-tempered with blue notes and ornaments. The arrangement will also work transposed down one octave for three-part male choir or SAT (at notated pitch), or SAB (the basses singing the alto part one octave lower).
The bukkehorn (also called Billy Goat Horn) is a traditional Norwegian instrument made from a goat’s horn.
