FORORD

Edvard Fliflet Bræin (1924-1976) var en norsk komponist og dirigent født i Kristiansund. Bræins mest kjente komposisjoner er Ut mot havet (1964) og operaen Anne Pedersdotter (1971).

Bræin studerte komposisjon med Bjarne Brustad ved Musikkonservatoriet i Oslo 1942–1945. 1950-1951 med Jean Rivier ved konservatoriet i Paris. Han tok organisteksamen i 1945 og debuterte som dirigent med Musikselskabet Harmoniens Orkester [Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester, fra 1987] i Bergen i 1947.

Trio ble påbegynt 18. mars og avsluttet 12. mai 1942. Bræin fyllte 18 23 august samme år.

PREFACE

Edvard Fliflet Bræin (1924-1976) was a Norwegian composer and conductor born in Kristiansund. Bræin’s best-known compositions are Ut mot havet [Towards the Sea] (1964) and the opera Anne Pedersdotter (1971).

Bræin studied composition with Bjarne Brustad at the Music Conservatory in Oslo 1942-1945. 1950-1951 with Jean Rivier at the Paris Conservatory. He graduated as an organist in 1945 and made his conducting debut with Musikselskabet Harmoniens Orkester [Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, from 1987] in Bergen in 1947.

Bræin begun writing Trio on 18 March and finished on 12 May 1942. He turned 18 on 23 August the same year.

CRITICAL REPORT

A critical edition examines whether there are typographical errors in the notes and compares the manuscript with other manuscripts and printed editions by the composer. At the back of the score there is a revision report: a list of what has been changed and which sources have been used.

There are no parts in the folder with Trio for flute, oboe and clarinet in A at the National Library of Norway. According to the original manuscript, the composition was begun on 18 March 1942. Bræin has not written dynamics into the score. Metronome is not specified. But the counting unit is. He mostly worked together with the performers, and many details were recorded during the rehearsals. Considering that Bræin was an accomplished flautist, it is possible that he tried out the trio when he studied at the Oslo Conservatory of Music from 1942 to 1945, but it is difficult to know, as the parts have not been preserved.

The casting off corresponds with the original manuscript.
