(b. 1947) studied piano with Bruno Seidlhofer (Vienna), L. Stefanski (Warsaw) and Conrad Hanssen (Detmold), composition with Alfred Uhl, and conducting with Hans Swarovski. In the course of numerous appearances and performances as a composer, pianist and conductor in Europe, Asia and the USA, Barcaba has established an international reputation. Certain works of his have received their first performance during the Konzerte des Neuen Künstlerforums concert series in Vienna. As professor at the music university in Vienna he is first and foremost an advocate of musical interpretation after Heinrich Schenker – a method which, through in-depth artistic and analytical observation aims at greater authenticity in its renditions of, for the most part, classical works. For many years he has taught piano and coached several young chamber music groups in the early stages of their career. As a pianist and teacher he has attended influential international festivals such as Colmar (France), Seoul (Korea), New York, Ottawa, Groningen (the Netherlands), Musikalisches Sommerfestival in Ostfriesland, Schleswig Holstein, and Vienna. Peter Barcaba’s music is frequently performed; his opus list includes works for orchestra such as the “Klezmer-Serenade”, “Rhapsodie”; sacred works including “Abendmal”; a piano concerto, saxophone concerto, string quartets, piano trios, works for violin and piano, a cello sonata, solo piano pieces and a sonata for two pianos, in addition to several song cycles, including a cycle of Passion songs, “Passionsgesänge”.

ARRANGEMENTS: MUSIC FROM FITZWILLIAM VIRGINA BOOK The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book is the most important source of keyboard music from the periods in English history called the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. It includes music dating from appr. 1560 to 1610 by composers like John Bull, William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons, Giles Farnaby, Peter Phillips, music by unknown composers and some from the continent of Europe. “Virginal” was a small keyboard instrument of the harpsichord (Cembalo) family. It was popular in Northern Europa and Italy in the late Medieval and Renaissance periods. The first mention of a virginal in written document is dated around 1460 and in England about 1530 when King Henry VIII purchased first such instrument for his court. The original manuscript is in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England (thereby its name), and the first modern edition was printed in 1899 by Breitkopf & Härtel and edited by J. A. Fuller Maitland and W. Barclay Squire. A complete republication in two volumes are available from Dover Publication. From this large collection of pieces, appr. 300, Peter Klemke has selected a number of pieces and arranged them for mallet duos:

ARR. PETER KLEMKE
Arrangements of Joplin, Scott (1868-1917): Scott Joplin is considered to be the first great Afro-American composer. He grew up in the town of Texarkana on the Texas-Arkansas border. He had few early educational opportunities, but a German immigrant musician, Julius Weiss, taught the young Joplin and played a major role in forming the young student. It is also considered undisputed that Joplin created a place for himself as an important contributor in both serious music and as an innovator in the development of piano jazz, - and in fact in jazz as a whole. Joplin’s syncopated musical style found expression in the popular idiom of piano ragtime. Many contemporary serious composers were influenced by Joplin, and no doubt most of popular music composers later. Peter Klemke has selected a number of Joplin’s enduring classics, and arranged them for a quartet of mallet instruments. ARR. PETER KLEMKE • THE CASCADES A piano rag composed 1904. Matthias Schmitt was born in Würzburg in 1958 and was introduced to music at the age of 4. As many of his generation, he got involved in popular music as a listener and musician in bands. At the end of the 70’s, Schmitt came in contact with the composer and percussion teacher, Siegfried Fink. which led to studies and greater involvement with percussion instruments, which eventually made his career as a composer and teacher. Since 1996 Schmitt has focused on percussion music, and has created some of the most popular marimba pieces on the market, like “Ghanaia”, “Sechs Miniaturen”, “Corrido” and “Nocturne” to name a few. His great interest in education shows Clearly in his threevolume collection “Young and Sweet (Suite)”, which now are available with a CD in each volume. Pascal Schumacher has been described as a “Goldsmith” in his art, a boundary-pushing musician, a resourceful improviser and an imaginative composer. Keen to explore the links that exist between many musical genres, it is difficult to pigeon–hole his talent, his taste or his musical influences. One thing is certain: he is a Vibraphone player with a unique aptitude and sensitivity who manages to inject panache and flamboyance into every performance. His flair for improvisation is married to a lucid inventiveness which together create an original sound as visionary as it is melodic. As a physical performer, he is skilful, farreaching and theatrical without being pretentious, making his performances inclusive and interesting to watch. • WINDFALL CONCERTO For Vibraphone and Orchestra Study score (N.M.O. 13576A) Orchestral parts available on hire

Born in Malmö 1963, a town in southern Sweden. Like all Swedish kids at that time he had to start at the local music school by playing recorder. Unlike most kids he actually enjoyed it, and a couple of years later he got the chance to study drum set and percussion. Roger got his classical training at Malmö Music Conservatory studying under Lennart Gruvstedt and percussion legend Bent Lylloff, In 1984 he got the poortunity to meet and study with jazz greats Gary Burton and Ed Saindon at Berklee School of Music, and pursue his interest in improvised music and the vibraphone. 1998 he won the audition to The Royal Opera of Stockholm, and in 1999 he got the position as assistant principle percussionist. A position he still holds today. His first solo album “The Great European Song Book” with saxophone player Joakim Milder and pianist Adam Forkelid, - an unique project that combines the world of opera and the world of jazz, was released 2006, and our new publication is a result of this important album.

Our aim is to provide students with good quality material to play from the vast amount of music available from previous historic periods. Our conviction is that playing music from the past alongside music of our time strengthens the understanding of music generally, and gives students a broader perspective on how music has developed through time, and why and how music in our time has been influenced by great composers and great music of the past. This is why we publish arrangements of music by Johann Sebastian Bach., Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Edvard Grieg, Maurice THE MUSIC HISTORIC LIBRARY Ravel and others alongside contemporary composers. Some arrangements are easy, - others more difficult. Welcome to the “percussion music” of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Impressionist eras! We hope you enjoy it!
