PREFACE I don’t want to impose my own pedaling to any musician. It is always up to the performer. Nevertheless, there are some exceptions. In certain fragments I would like to use a long pedal as a sound effect - such places are marked. You would also find the fragments that are marked “senza ped.” - during these bars the vibraphone should sound without a pedal. Marking “ord.” indicates the end of the “senza ped.” fragment and return to pedaling ad libitum. Mallet-damping is marked with “x” in bars where it is obligatory. The rest of the malletdamping is up to a performer.
Dear friends, dear colleagues, I am very happy to share with you my solo project “Bach Vibrations”, which I created some years ago. “Bach Vibrations” is a set of improvisations on fifteen two-part inventions of Johann Sebastian Bach. The idea of this project came from the worldwide famous violinist Gidon Kremer whom I have had the pleasure to work closely with for almost twenty years. Maestro Kremer suggested that it would be interesting to recompose each invention in a different style to represent the personal performance characteristics of many famous jazz pianists and in so doing also maintain the understanding of what is a good polyphony. The project is not a “crossover” as such but an all-inclusive homage through the music of J.S. Bach to so many great interpreters. The CD “Bach Vibrations” released by the Austrian “Gramola” label in 2007 was recently mentioned by the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik Bestenliste, as one of the discoveries of the year. I would like to explain a few things about the notation in these pieces. Please don’t be surprised about the lack of pedal markings. As for me, the use of the pedal is a very personal and
Since these compositions are jazz pieces, you would find an improvisation on a given harmonic pattern in most of them. In some pieces this pattern is written as a simple chord progression and in others there is a written accompaniment that needs to be followed. When you see the indication “The improvisation could be longer”, performer can make the improvisation two, three or even four times longer than it’s written. In places where there is no such indication you should follow the score as marked to keep the correct form of the piece. The improvisational fragment is always marked with a double bar line. In each piece you will also find my own improvisation written out in smaller notes if you wish to perform it. There are many differences between the CD recording and the score. Please don’t be surprised. I am playing these pieces differently every time. Although the CD was published ten years ago, the edition of the score was made in 2017.
