“A sound world that is astounding and moving” Music-Web International on Marcus Paus’s music As society shut down in March 2020 with the onset of the Covid 19 pandemic leading Norwegian composer Marcus Paus began writing a series of works for friends in an attempt to alleviate some of the ennui and uncertainty that affected us all. This double CD presents these works in stunning performances by some of Norway’s finest musicians. Disc one has intimate chamber works; disc two following with two concerti accompanied by the splendid Arctic Symphony Chamber Orchestra, led by renowned violinist Henning Kraggerud. This is music of great clarity, sensitivity and sheer emotional power.

Marcus Paus is one of Norway’s most prominent and prolific composers. His catalogue includes solo, chamber and orchestral pieces, choral music, operas and several scores for stage and screen. His work is lauded for its expressivity and craftsmanship. Important among his output are the oratorio The Beauty That Still Remains on texts by Anne Frank; Hate Songs for mezzo soprano Tora Augestad on the poetry of Dorothy Parker; Concerto for Timpani and Orchestra written for the Bergen Philharmonic’s 250th season, and the large scale, multi-award nominated symphonic score for André Øvredal’s film MORTAL. 2021 saw premières of Decameron: Concerto Rifugio and Voyage for the Arctic Philharmonic with soloists Petter Richter and Miriam Helms Ålien respectively; the oratorio Litanies on poems by Siegfried Sassoon; the Sonata for Violin & Piano; and Tuba Mirum, a concerto for tuba player August Schieldrop with the Oslo Philharmonic.
