At one time, competition between cable and satellite companies was relatively straightforward with each outdoing the other with monthly and annual subscription deals. However, times have changed. Convergence Consulting, a Toronto-based firm that collects extensive data on the North American cable and phone industries recently reported that while growth in the Canadian TV market grew by approximately 220,000 households annually between 2007 and 2011, a shift in the market began in 2013. TV subscriptions began to decline and have continued on this path at an alarming rate for cable companies. Many new households are choosing Netflix and video streaming over traditional subscriptions for a much lower monthly fee. While it requires having a TV that’s correctly set up with high-speed internet and either Smart TV or a media player like a Roku stick (as long as you have HDMI capability), it’s proving a small investment to save hundreds of dollars a year in services. Netflix subscriptions grew by almost a million in 2013 alone, and although Rogers/Shaw and Bell fought back with Netflix-like services such as Shomi and Crave TV, respectively, the trend continues in favour of non-cable solutions. That is until the Canadian moguls joined forces with U.S. technology provider, Comcast. In the western provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, Shaw Communications Inc. has seen its first increase in cable subscriptions since introducing BlueSky TV, a voice-controlled television product launched
in January of 2017. The product is powered by Comcast’s X1 technology, a cloud-based entertainment platform based in the United States. By the end of 2017, Rogers Communications, a primary provider in the east, abandoned its TV platform in favour of Comcast’s X1 technology, “Ignite TV,” which it introduced in a soft launch in July 2018 to Ontario customers only. However, gaining customers who were never cable subscribers in the first place is proving difficult. Some households, notably the younger generation, have never signed up for TV services, which pulls down net subscriber numbers. Other homes which once paid for cable are investing in Smart TVs and Netflix instead, turning a blind eye to any new cable offerings. “Netflix until recently was the only subscription option available to Canadians without a linear TV subscription,” says Brahm Eiley, president of Convergence Consulting. “We expect there will be more alternatives available to Canadians in the years to come.” Despite the attempts of the big cable companies to make a comeback, Convergence Research Group still estimates that by 2020 streaming services will surpass cable as the number one way Canadians watch TV.
