A MESSAGE FROM MARSHALL HEALTH

The new initiatives and specialties we launched in 2017 are further evidence that patients are our #1 priority. You’ll see Marshall Health continue to meet relevant needs in patient care in 2018. Certainly, the highlight of 2017 was opening our newly renovated, 51,000 square foot multispecialty building in Teays Valley, West Virginia. This outpatient facility now houses more than 32 Marshall Health providers and added specialties like sports medicine, spine care and neurology to the list of services we provide in Putnam County.

MESSAGE

When you refer your patients to Marshall Health, you want to know that they are receiving the best care. Our board-certified, fellowship-trained physicians bring a level of expertise and experience to more than 65 specialties that you want for your patients. Our physicians, however, are just one component of the care team model your patients experience at Marshall Health. During more than 560,000* patient visits during 2017, nursing staff, clinical pharmacists, patient care coordinators, perioperative staff and many others were part of the coordinated care provided by Marshall Health.

Joseph I. Shapiro, M.D. Dean, Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine

Larry D. Dial, M.D. Chief Medical Officer Marshall Health

With a growing senior adult population in West Virginia and the tristate, Marshall Health expanded services for adults 55 and older with new providers and the newly established Center for Healthy Aging and the Senior Pain & Wellness Center. A new accredited neurology residency program was approved to begin in 2018. The four-year program will train up to three residents per year, beginning July 1, and will help the school of medicine and Marshall Health continue to bring advancements in neurologic care to our region. New child and adolescent psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry fellowships will add new opportunities for expanded assessment, diagnosis and treatment of children, adolescents and their families. As the region’s only academic health system, we are committed to a growing research enterprise aimed at improving both the practice of medicine and patient care. With more than 40 clinical trials currently underway in collaboration with the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center, Marshall researchers are making medical advances in fields like cancer, liver disease, obesity and pneumonia as well as health disparities important to the people of West Virginia and Appalachia. Finally, as we rounded out 2017, we announced our new Maier professor of addiction sciences, who will spearhead addiction-related research and clinical initiatives in the newly formed division of addiction services within the department of family & community health. Learn more about new and evolving addiction-related initiatives at Marshall Health and the school of medicine on page 4.

COMMUNITY IN CRISIS:

Marshall’s response to the opioid epidemic Marshall University formed a substance use recovery coalition in October 2016 to find holistic solutions to the addiction problem and its negative effects on our region. The school of medicine and Marshall Health have expanded and developed a number of initiatives, including those outlined below, in recent months to address this public health crisis. Critical areas of research at the school of medicine related to the crisis include Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), neurobiology and neuropharmacology. Below are a few highlights of the programs that have been launched. Healthy Connections. Unites more than 25 local groups to make a greater impact in the regional community. The program serves as a clearinghouse to help those affected by substance use to identify treatment options and support services including trained recovery coaches, child care and life skills. Marshall Health’s recovery center for families will provide residential treatment services for pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorders and their children. This project is funded through a $2.8 million grant from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Ryan Brown Addiction Prevention and Recovery Fund and will be located in the Huntington City Mission’s former 18-unit transitional living complex known as Project Hope. Maternal Addiction Recovery Center (MARC). Provides comprehensive obstetrical care, outpatient addiction care and counseling for expectant mothers with opiate addiction. This program has been in place since 2012, but has expanded in recent months. MARC is a registered office-based medication-assisted treatment program through the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. Call 304-691-8730 for referrals or more information. PROACT. New addiction care initiative sponsored by Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center and Marshall Health will act as a single-accessible service hub to treat substance use disorders, including medicationassisted treatment (MAT), 12-step facilitation, peer recovery support and couple/family therapy. Quick Response Teams. In partnership with the City of Huntington and coordinated by Cabell County Emergency Services, our Quick Response Teams (QRT) first deployed in December 2017. QRTs include a police officer, an EMT and either a recovery coach or clinician who follow up with people who have overdosed to help them get into treatment.

Daniel Langleben, M.D. Maier Professor & Director of Addiction Sciences Dr. Daniel Langleben will join our team in 2018 to lead the school of medicine’s new division of addiction sciences within the Department of Family & Community Health. An addiction psychiatry specialist & researcher at University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Dr. Langleben is board-certified in psychiatry and neurology, with special qualification in addiction psychiatry, and a Distinguished Fellow of the Annenberg Public Policy Center.
