We are more. Being “more” to our patients and the communities we serve goes beyond a physical footprint. It’s a philosophy that impacts how we see the world, ourselves and how we best meet the needs of our patients. The health care landscape is ever-evolving in ways that will impact our organization and the health of our region for decades to come.
More effective communication. Later this year, our goal is to launch a new electronic health record and patient portal with Cabell Huntington Hospital, our primary teaching hospital. In addition to internal efficiencies, this system integration will improve care coordination and access to information seamlessly between inpatient and outpatient settings throughout the patient care process.
2020 has already brought more than its fair share of challenges as we all respond to a public health crisis unlike any of us have ever experienced. Thank you for serving on the front lines and working to keep our employees, patients and communities safe.
More research and clinical trials. The fact that Marshall University earned R2 status as a research institution is significant. That designation signals an uptick in research performance. As clinicians, it’s important for you to know that we are seeing an increase in clinical trials at Marshall—from TOPS™ spinal surgery to maternal respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). These coordinated efforts through the Marshall Clinical Research Center are opening the door to new and exciting opportunities close to home for patients. We are dedicated to finding effective treatments for the diseases that impact our community.
More advanced specialty care. At Marshall Health, each and every patient is a priority. Through this mindset, we continue to bring more advanced specialty care to the region. The onset of the COVID-19 crisis has fast-tracked telemedicine services at Marshall Health. Virtual visits are now available with 250 Marshall providers in primary care and more than 45 specialties. Among others, we’ve also expanded care for our youngest patients. From specialists in infectious disease and gastroenterology to expanded allergy/immunology care, serving our pediatric population is critical to the long-term health of our region. Integrated service lines and centers of excellence with Mountain Health Network and community physicians will offer additional opportunities for expanded care for the region. We also continue to grow services at Marshall Health-Teays Valley, bringing plastic and reconstructive surgery in 2020 and opening lab and x-ray services to community providers outside Marshall Health. In 2019, Marshall Health opened its third retail pharmacy, located inside PROACT, with convenient drive-thru service. Also, the Marshall Pharmacy inside the Marshall University Medical Center earned accreditation as a specialty pharmacy, meaning that patients can now access specialty medications for complex, chronic conditions at this location 24/7.
More growth in academic medicine. Strategic changes and growth at the School of Medicine will also impact patient care in 2020. Most notably, we have established a stand-alone department for Oncology, led by urologic oncologist James C. Jensen, MD, medical director of Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center. This move strategically facilitates increased collaboration in both practice and research among our faculty. Finally, this summer, we will usher in new fellowship programs for addiction medicine, geriatric medicine, geriatric psychiatry and pediatric hospital medicine. These training programs create a platform, coupled with much-needed human resources, for advanced patient care that help us serve three distinct populations and generate a pipeline of physicians for our rural communities. We appreciate your partnership. Please let us know how we can support the work you do to improve the health of our region each and every day.
