Back-to-school tips for your family Before you know it, summer will be drawing to a close, and kids will be headed back to school. To make the transition a little easier, here are some tips and must-dos to help you prepare. Marshall Health introduces innovative ACL reconstruction procedure An innovative procedure that uses a patient’s bone marrow to repair and reconstruct the Anterior Cruciate Ligament, or ACL, is now available at Marshall Orthopaedics. ACL injuries, which involve a ligament sprain or tear, are among the most common knee injuries. Unlike the traditional surgery used to reconstruct a torn ACL, this minimally invasive technique uses a bone marrow aspiration containing stem cells, along with an internal brace, to speed recovery and reduce downtime. The procedure is performed locally by Chad D. Lavender, M.D., a board-certified, sports medicine fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon as an outpatient procedure at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Lavender is accepting new patients and referrals at Marshall Health-Teays Valley in Scott Depot and the Marshall Sports Medicine Institute in Huntington. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 304-691-6710.

Renovations begin on residential treatment facility Marshall Health, in cooperation with the Huntington City Mission, began renovating a 15,000-square-foot building located on the northeast corner of 7th Avenue and 10th Street in Huntington next to the city mission. The building formerly known as “Project Hope” will become home to “Project Hope for Women and Children,” the latest Marshall Health initiative designed to provide a continuum of care for women suffering from substance use disorder and their children. Each of the 18 apartments will consist of two or three bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room and kitchenette. The program is funded through a grant from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. Some services, such as peer and residential supports and family therapy will be provided on site, but many of the services, including medication assisted treatment, will be delivered in outpatient locations, like PROACT, a health care collaborative announced in April 2018 that will act as a single-accessible service hub for addiction care and treatment.
