Marshall Health opens residential treatment facility for women and children
Located by the Huntington City Mission, the newly renovated, 15,000 square-foot facility features 18 single-family apartments.
Located at 1012 Seventh Ave. next to the Huntington City Mission, Project Hope for Women & Children offers a safe living environment for new and expectant mothers suffering from substance use disorder and their children. The project also provides women with the treatment and recovery resources necessary to facilitate long-term well-being.
“Project Hope uses a phased approach to treat addiction,” said Stephen M. Petrany, MD, chair of the department of family and community health at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. “Each individual is assessed to determine an appropriate, personalized treatment plan. Individual and group therapy as well as life skills coaching will be available onsite.”
The newly renovated, 15,000 squarefoot facility features 18 single-family apartments that include two or three bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room and kitchenette. Shared laundry facilities are also on site, and support staff are available 24/7. A playground and renovated courtyard will be unveiled this spring through a generous gift from The Health Plan.
Other services, such as medicationassisted treatment, career placement and training and spiritual counseling, will be delivered in outpatient locations including PROACT. Project Hope residents will also have access to medical and psychiatric care through Marshall Health.
“Project Hope for Women & Children addresses a much-needed gap in the continuum of care,” said Beth L. Hammers, chief executive officer of Marshall Health. “As a mother, I also take great pride in the fact that Project Hope will make it possible for women to get the care they need to achieve long-term recovery while their children remain in their care and they work to establish a stable, strong and loving family unit.” Referrals will mainly come from local addiction recovery initiatives, including the Huntington City Mission and PROACT. For more information, please contact Project Hope Director Jessica Tackett at 304-696HOPE (4673).
Finding a primary care provider: A New Year’s resolution you can keep By Tammy L. Bannister, MD, Family Medicine Of all our 2019 resolutions about taking better care of ourselves, making an appointment with a primary care doctor may be one of the most beneficial. Many think that they only need a doctor if they are sick, but research shows that people who have primary care doctors live longer and have less complications from illnesses when they do get sick. There are several reasons why researchers think this is true. One of those includes that seeing a primary care doctor allows early detection and treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, which also saves you money down the road. Primary care doctors are also able to care for you during a sudden illness and help you manage any chronic medical conditions. They are able to treat most illnesses in the outpatient setting and can make referrals to specialist physicians if needed. Many primary care doctors have extended evening hours and also provide after hour phone or internet access for established patients who need advice regarding illnesses when the office is closed. When choosing a primary care doctor, you should consider a few things, such as: • Accessibility: Do the office location AND the office hours fit your schedule? • Insurance: Does the physician accept your insurance coverage? • Reputation: Ask friends and family you respect who they see as their primary care doctor. For these reasons and many more, be sure to make one of your New Year’s resolutions be to make an appointment with your primary care doctor! If you don’t have one, visit www.marshallhealth.org to find a primary care provider near you.

Start this year with a heart healthy diet A recent expert panel review of more than 40 major diets ranked the Mediterranean diet number one. It is easy to follow and dense in quality nutrients. It also has the ability to facilitate weight loss. The Mediterranean diet is based on generous portions of lower calorie, high nutrient food such as vegetables, fish, beans, fruits and whole grains at every meal. Poultry and dairy are consumed in moderation, and red meat and sweets are eaten very infrequently. This diet creates a sense of fullness and helps effectively control blood sugar levels. Additionally, bad cholesterol levels go down, good cholesterol levels rise, and blood pressure is lowered, which helps reduce risk for cardiovascular disease. Marshall Heath cardiologist Dr. Andrew Vaughan agrees the Mediterranean diet is great for heart health. To get started on this eating regime, consider whipping up these easy dishes: GRILLED SALMON: Fire up the grill, and then add salmon fillets prepared with olive oil, fresh basil and parsley, garlic, pepper and lemon juice. Garnish with sliced lemons and olives.
GREEK SALAD: Chop cucumbers, tomatoes, red onion, olives, fresh basil and oregano and feta cheese. Marinate with a mixture of olive oil, white wine vinegar, a pinch of salt and pepper, and some lemon juice. Enjoy as is or add to a bed of lettuce.
FRUIT DESSERT: Chop up a few of your favorite fruits, such as bananas and berries. Drizzle with a mixture of honey, lime juice and fresh chopped mint. You can also add some crunch with chopped nuts.

Telemedicine services available for high risk pregnancies High risk pregnancy patients now have access to one of our maternal-fetal medicine specialists close to home thanks to the power of technology. Using a real-time video conference in the office of the patient’s local physician, pregnant patients throughout West Virginia are able to interact with our board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialists, David Chaffin, MD, FACOG, and Kelly Cummings, MD, FACOG. Both are fellowship-trained in caring for women experiencing high-risk pregnancies due to advanced maternal age, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, preterm labor, placenta previa, miscarriage risk, carrying more than one baby and/or other conditions that could endanger the health of the mother or her baby. Similar to a regular office visit, the video interaction may include an exam by the local physician or an ultrasound technician under the direction of Dr. Chaffin or Dr. Cummings. Through this technology, the local physician has the opportunity to be in a discussion on the findings, and the patient can have a consult without having to travel (unless necessary to make a diagnosis or for treatment.) To find out if your provider participates in the program or make a referral, call Whitney Blackburn, RN, at Marshall Obstetrics & Gynecology at 1-833-649-3263 or 681-378-5437.
