New facility opens for those seeking recovery
A new coordinated effort designed to bring hope and healing to Huntington opened its doors October 8. The Provider Response Organization for Addiction Care & Treatment, or PROACT, is a joint initiative of Cabell Huntington Hospital, Marshall Health, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Thomas Health System and Valley Health dedicated to reducing the impact of addiction in the community. The new non-profit outpatient medical facility operates as a singleaccessible service hub that brings together behavioral, social and medical resources from the community to effectively triage patients suffering from addiction. A patient’s experience will be different depending on their needs. “Many will find treatment at the actual PROACT facility, including MedicationAssisted Treatment (MAT) and
individual and group therapy. But, this is only the beginning. Their PROACT experience may include supportive partnerships with peer recovery coaches who themselves have successfully entered into a recovery phase of their illness,” said Stephen Petrany, MD, PROACT board member and chairman of the department of family medicine at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Dr. Petrany further explained how PROACT connects individuals to organizations to fulfill needs such as housing or spiritual care as well as works with community businesses to find employment and training for those successfully moving toward remission. The majority of patients seen will be through referrals. PROACT serves as
a single regional referral point to assess patients following discharge from local emergency rooms and inpatient detox units and by referral from quick response teams and other emergency medical response teams. It also accepts self-referrals and referrals from community providers. The ultimate goal of PROACT is to effectively serve, educate and treat individuals through and beyond the initial stages of recovery until they become long-term, committed members of society. PROACT is located at 800 20th Street in Huntington. For more information or to make a referral, call 304-6968700. Walk-ins are also welcome. Check yourself, protect yourself.
Breast cancer awareness month a reminder of monthly self-exams, mammograms At Marshall Health, we recommend women conduct monthly breast self-exams and report concerns or changes to your doctor. How can I reduce my risk of breast cancer? You can’t change some factors like your age or family history, but, according to the CDC, you can help lower your risk for breast cancer by making healthy lifestyle choices. • Maintain a healthy weight. • Exercise regularly—about 30 minutes, five times a week. • If you drink, limit alcohol to no more than one drink per day. • Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke. • Breastfeed, if possible. If you have a family history of breast cancer or are taking hormone replacement therapy or oral contraceptives (birth control pills), talk with your doctor about other ways to lower your risk. Not only do these lifestyle choices lower your risk for developing cancer, they also improve your chances of surviving cancer. Is it time for my mammogram? If you have to ask that question, the answer is most likely “yes.” We can’t tell you how important it is that women receive annual mammograms starting at age 50* even if you have no symptoms or family history of breast cancer. Annual mammograms can detect cancer early—when it is most treatable. In fact, mammograms show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. * At Marshall Health, we follow the current measures from HEDIS (Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set) for breast cancer screening. What happens during a mammogram? During your mammogram, a qualified technician will position your breast in the mammography unit. Your breast is placed on a special platform and compressed. The technician gradually compresses your breast with the machine, and while you hold still, an image is taken that produces a top-to-bottom view of the breast. You will be asked to change positions so the side view of the breast can also be produced. While you may be in the clinic up to an hour, the procedure itself only lasts about 15 to 20 minutes. To schedule your annual mammogram screening at Marshall Health-Teays Valley, call 304-691-1800.

Alternative-treatment for depression available A new treatment alternative for individuals with chronic depression is now available at Marshall Health. Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is a non-invasive alternative for individuals with treatment-resistant depression. TMS is performed in a doctor’s office using a magnetic coil to activate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. Treatments take about 45 minutes and are performed daily for four to six weeks. Although TMS has been FDA approved as a treatment alternative for depression in the United States since 2008, TMS is not for everyone diagnosed with depression. Patients must first be evaluated by a TMS-trained psychiatrist to determine if the procedure is right for them. For more information or to schedule a TMS evaluation, please call Marshall Psychiatry at 304-691-1500.
