We are specialty care. As a part of a community-based medical school, the mission of Marshall Health centers around the importance of primary care in a patient’s overall health and wellbeing. Throughout the past 40 years, Marshall Health’s role has evolved as we partner with primary care physicians and bring more options for specialty care to our region than ever before.
Specialized training. As an academic health system, the growth of our specialty services is symbiotic with the level of education and training we provide at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Our students, residents and fellows are receiving increasingly robust training opportunities by having more specialists on site and accessible during their rotations.
During the past year, we’ve grown to accommodate community needs in:
In 2020, five new fellowship programs—addiction medicine, child/ adolescent psychiatry, geriatric medicine, geriatric psychiatry and pediatric hospital medicine—welcomed their first fellows. And, in 2021, we added new fellowships in gastroenterology and neonatal-perinatal medicine. We now have more than 245 resident physicians and fellows training in 24 different programs.
•
Heart failure and related areas like cardio-oncology and pulmonary-hypertension,
•
Mohs surgery, one of the most effective treatments for skin cancer
•
Pediatric specialties including endocrinology, infectious disease, nephrology and emergency medicine, and
•
Health care technologies and telehealth to ensure patients can access care anywhere with a reliable internet connection, and so our specialists can connect with referring physicians quickly and efficiently.
These efforts are complemented by partnerships with 18 area hospitals. In early 2021, a new relationship with Three Gables Surgery Center in Proctorville, Ohio, resulted in expanded outpatient elective surgery options for our patients. Marshall Orthopaedics also partnered with Boone Memorial Hospital to bring comprehensive sports medicine and orthopaedic services to Madison, West Virginia. Specialized research. Marshall scientists take tremendous pride in researching the conditions that most impact West Virginians—from addiction to heart disease to obesity, liver disease and more. Medical school faculty, students and residents are producing publications, presenting their findings and earning significant grant awards at a higher rate than ever before. Through the Marshall Clinical Research Center, our physician scientists are engaged in more than 40 active clinical trials, allowing patients access to innovative treatment options.
Specialized response. Like so many health care organizations and other industries across the globe, the past year has been a challenge. We dedicated time and resources to responding to COVID-19 in a way that prioritizes patient and employee safety. We launched community testing sites to ensure access to testing and have administered 40,000 tests and counting. We continue to work closely with the CabellHuntington Health Department to mobilize vaccination efforts throughout the community and in our clinics. In late 2020, we also launched a new electronic health record and patient portal with Cabell Huntington Hospital, our primary teaching hospital. The long-term impact of this system integration will improve care coordination and access to information seamlessly between inpatient and outpatient settings. We appreciate your continued partnership, especially amid the ups and downs of 2020. Please let us know how we can support you as we work together to improve the health of our region.
