2022 BLUES AND SPORT AWARDS PRESENTATION
FRIDAY 25 NOVEMBER 2022 KATHLEEN FITZPATRICK THEATRE AND UNIVERSITY HOUSE PARKVILLE CAMPUS
2022 BLUES AND SPORT AWARDS PRESENTATION
THE DIRECTOR’S WELCOME On behalf of the University, I would like to welcome you to the 2022 Blues and Sports Awards, which recognises the outstanding sporting achievements of our studentathletes and acknowledges the distinguished service of the many volunteers and staff who support our athletes and teams. Sport at the University is nearly as old as the institution itself, with the first intervarsity against the University of Sydney in rowing and cricket held in Melbourne in 1870. Since then, thousands of students have gone on to represent the University with over 11,000 Blues or Half-Blues awarded to student-athletes, many who have also represented their county at the Olympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games.
The COVID Pandemic has had a significant impact across the globe including in many cases, the cancellation of national and international sporting competitions. Consequently, Blues and Sport Awards have not been presented since 2019 breaking an uninterrupted run back to World War Two which makes tonight’s event very special. I would like to acknowledge all our coaches, team managers, sports clubs, and support staff who together ensure that our teams are the best prepared in the country. I would also like to recognise the efforts of the staff that support our student-athletes with access to flexible study assistance, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, and travel grants to enable them to compete
successfully. I would also like to acknowledge the Blues Advisory Group which has the difficult task of determining the awards. Finally, congratulations to all our student-athletes and dedicated volunteers who we recognise tonight, and I hope you all enjoy this wonderful celebration. Thank you, Tim Lee Director Of Sport
