2023 BLUES AND SPORT AWARDS PRESENTATION
FRIDAY 24 NOVEMBER 2023 KATHLEEN FITZPATRICK THEATRE AND UNIVERSITY HOUSE PARKVILLE CAMPUS
DIRECTOR’S WELCOME On behalf of the University, I would like to welcome you to the 2023 Blues and Sports Awards to recognise the outstanding sporting achievements of our student-athletes and acknowledge the distinguished service of the many volunteers and staff who support our athletes and teams. Sport at the University is nearly as old as the institution itself with the first intervarsity against the University of Sydney in rowing and cricket held in Melbourne in 1870. Since then, thousands of students have gone on to represent the University with over 11,000 Blues or Half-Blues awarded to student athletes, many who have also represented their county at the Olympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games. It was a great year for the University’s sporting teams. The University Basketball League was a huge success, with the Men’s team winning the League and the Women’s team making semi-finals. The University won 7 National titles at Uni Nationals in September, including Men’s Rugby – the first time a Victorian University had claimed the title, and the inaugural title for Mixed Lacrosse along with Women’s Fencing, Cycling, Golf, Table Tennis and Men’s Fencing and Volleyball. Thank you to all our coaches, team managers, sports clubs and support staff who together ensure that our teams are the best prepared in the country. I would also like to acknowledge the Blues Advisory Group who have the difficult task of determining the awards. Finally, congratulations to all our student-athletes and dedicated volunteers who we recognise tonight, and I hope you all enjoy this fabulous celebration. Tim Lee Director of Sport
