MUSTANG MEDIA GROUP

Mustang Media Group is the fully integrated student media organization at Cal Poly. When formed in 2013, it became the first program of its kind in the California State University system, bringing Mustang News, CPTV and KCPR-FM under one umbrella and providing students with the type of environment that has become standard in today’s media industry. This year, Central Coast PRspectives (CCPR) has officially become part of MMG and is now the public relations/marketing arm of the organization. The last component of MMG is Green and Gold Digital, which provides a myriad of services to clients. Here is a quick look at all of the divisions of MMG:

Mustang News

KCPR-FM

Mustang News is the converged news operation of the organization, covering Cal Poly with a weekly tabloid newspaper, regular newscasts available on the local community network on cable television and online, 24/7 news updates on the award-winning MustangNews.net and regular news programing on KCPR-FM. Journalism senior Naba Ahmed is the 2017–2018 Editor of Mustang News and coordinates coverage on the various media platforms. Students in journalism classes also contribute stories to all platforms.

The student run radio station will be celebrating its 50th birthday in 2018 and continues to be one of the top-rated college stations nationally. Weird Al Yankovich started his career behind the microphone in the studios in Building 26, as did a number of national television correspondents such as David Kerley (ABC) and Michelle Franzen (NBC).

Green and Gold Digital GG Digital can do it all in terms of providing local businesses with marketing and advertising needs. From creating effective print ads, to developing innovative social media campaigns, to producing professional-quality video advertisements, this organization can deliver the services needed for most business. MMG can also provide livestreaming services for a variety of events. Currently MMG livestreams on campus events such as commencement and Fall Conference.

CCPR Central Coast PRspectives, founded in 2008 as a student-run public relations organization, becomes the newest facet of MMG. Led by Hannah Avdalovic in 2017–18, CCPR will take over all of the marketing and event planning for the organization. That includes the very popular SLO Fest in October and the Housing Fair in March. CCPR is also available to provide social media management and marketing for local businesses along with PR consulting.

serving San Luis Obispo since 1968

KCPR is Cal Poly’s radio station broadcasting over the air at 91.3 FM and online at kcpr.org. After a restructuring , KCPR is now under the guidance of Mustang Media Group and the Cal Poly Journalism Department. After coming off of a record-setting pledge drive over $17,000, KCPR is has relaunched its new brand to Cal Poly’s campus of 20,000 students. KCPR has also expanded beyond its radio platform by constantly putting out original content related to the arts on its website as well as KCPR’s very own quarterly magazine — Burnt.

Underwriting Underwriting is an authentic way to connect your product or service with an audience that has financially invested into their radio station. While the FCC regulates the language used in underwriting spots, it is an effective way to reach millennials who generally resist traditional advertising. Underwrite an hour of a weekly show for only $100 a month. The package includes: 40 on-air spots per month (2 spots per hour) Production of a 15-second spot Mention on the supporter section on kcpr.org

Reach KCPR’s on-air signal covers San Luis Obispo County spanning from north of Paso Robles to Arroyo Grande. KCPR’s online stream garners listenership from San Francisco to Los Angeles and the world.
