Its central location on Monterey Street downtown and its affordable prices make Aisuru the optimal sushi stop for college students.

“My friends and I make it a weekly tradition to get $2 California rolls on Tuesday,” business administration junior Emilie Kastell said. “It’s a fun way to spend time together while maintaining a college student’s budget.” “The two dollar California rolls on Tuesdays are so convenient, especially for us college students,” comAisuru’s Monday special is the Ninja roll for $2.50. puter science junior Lauren Epling said. “Not only are One of the more popular specials is $2 California rolls their California rolls delicious, but their version of the on Tuesday. BEST DESSERT

Batch

GABI TRAPANI

When it comes to tasty and trendy dessert places in San Luis Obispo, Batch is the top choice. After years of baking together, sisters Wendle Schoniger and Tami Becker opened Batch in 2012. Positive reviews of their confections from friends and family pushed them to open their very own icecream sandwich shop in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo, on the corner of Higuera Street and Broad Street. Batch gives customers the ability to choose from eight different flavors of Doc Burnstein’s ice cream and pair it with their choice of homemade cookie. Batch also caters events. Recreation, parks, and tourism administration sophomore Emma Schmidt recently hired them for an event. Schmidt said she loved working with Batch and part of why she chose them was so attendees could take cute photos with their ice cream. “The team at Batch was so organized and reliable during the whole planning process.” Schmidt said. “Bringing a little piece of downtown SLO to our backyard provided the perfect atmostphere for our ice cream social. Everyone loved taking fun pictures in front of the truck and enjoyed getting to try the yummy flavors.”

BEST AÇAÍ BOWL

Bowl’d

ALEJANDRA GARCIA

Established in January 2015, Bowl’d has become a San Luis Obispo favorite, winning Best Acai Bowl in San Luis Obispo as voted by Cal Poly students. Some stand-out menu items include the popular “Big 3” bowls: San Luis Obispo bowl, Paradise bowl and Protein bowl. A careful selection of ingredients creates a bowl’s exquisite taste and flawless display. “All of the fruit we put on top is organic and we get it from local vendors,” manager Bailey Rowley said. During lunch hours on the weekends, large crowds consisting of mostly college students make it their busiest time to visit. The second most popular time is the lunch hour on weekdays, where many young moms and their kids stop by for a quick, refreshing and healthy snack. The owners of Bowl’d own many local businesses including Batch, Kreuzberg and Brat Stop. Each of their businesses offer and maintain an upbeat vibe, something well-executed at Bowl’d.

BEST WINGS

Buffalo Wild Wings

ALEJANDRA GARCIA

Walk into Buffalo Wild Wings and the scent of freshly cooked chicken wings and an atmosphere of high energy conversations take over. Located in Madonna Plaza, it is a quick drive or bus ride to the restaurant for Poly Picks’ Best Wings. Being located in a college town where students are eager to save any dollar they can, it’s crucial to have good deals. Luckily, Buffalo Wild Wings has two big ones. The traditional Tuesday special offers all traditional wings for half price, while on Thursdays, boneless wings are 75 cents apiece. They also have two rounds of happy hour, Monday through Friday 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to closing.

BEST HANGOVER FOOD Charlie’s Place ISMAIL SEREMBA

When it comes to hangover food, Charlie’s Place is uncontested in San Luis Obispo. Its hangover breakfast burrito — filled with chicken fried steak, country gravy, eggs and hash browns all wrapped in a flour tortilla — is your very own post-drinking remedy. Located on Foothill Boulevard, just down the road from campus, Charlie’s Place will have you feeling back to your normal self in no time on those rough mornings. “I would not make it through the week without my dose of Charlie’s Place” animal science sophomore Stephanie Aquino said. Charlie’s Place was originally founded in Los Alamos, California in 1978. A sister restaurant opened in San Luis Obispo in 2012. Since then, it has become an important cornerstone of the Cal Poly culture.

With a variety of wings that include 16 flavors, 5 seasonings and 1 or 2 limited time offers, Buffalo Wild Wings gives you the opportunity to mix and match. Combined with a staff properly educated on their beer selection, Buffalo Wild Wings is a great place for a night out.

“The Cal Poly community is extremely important to our business and we just want to be able to give back,” Charlie’s Place Manager Cecilia Gonzales said.

“We bring the whole package,” general manager Nick Zachary said, “We’re going to give you great food at a great price, cold beer poured properly and an atmosphere no other restaurant can provide.”

Whether it’s trivia night or Sunday morning mimosas, seats will be filled by Cal Poly students. With happy hours every day of the week, Charlie’s Place certainly embraces the college culture, and budget. The fun and friendly atmosphere, complete with a full-service bar, allows customers to enjoy some of the best in American and Mexican cuisine in town. You will be sure to find what your heart desires at Charlie’s Place.

BEST BURGER

Eureka!

ELENA DEANGELIS

With delectable, hand-crafted burgers featuring local flavors, it’s no surprise that Eureka! was selected once again by Cal Poly students as the Best Burger in town. Though their signature burgers may have earned them their title, Eureka! offers an extensive menu featuring their innovative take on all-American fare, including mac n’ cheese balls and slow-roasted pork ribs. Eureka! aims to provide guests with a premium culinary experience in a fun, inviting setting — what Eureka! likes to refer to as “eatertainment.” The restaurant takes pride in creating a comfortable party ambiance for everyone, altering the lighting and music to match the current mood. Eureka!’s executive kitchen manager Erik Fernandez said he loves developing personal connections with customers and “seeing guests happy and loving their food makes me happy!” Their dedication to customer service attracts a lot of repeat customers, including Cal Poly students.

8 / Poly Picks 2017

Eureka!’s happy hours are popular for students with offerings from their scratch bar. Modeled after a 1930s prohibition bar, their hand-crafted cocktails feature house-made mixers, juices and premium liquors. “Our whiskey sour only has four ingredients … we really let the spirits speak for themselves,” general manager Jeremy Stemen said. Happy hour also provides Eureka! with the opportunity to give back to San Luis Obispo’s community and increasing their “SLOcal” presence. Their “Pay it Forward Pale” donates $2 per pour every Monday to local charities such as the Woods Humane Society. Management is excited for the continued success that Eureka! brings to San Luis Obispo with their energy, discovery and community, one American meal at a time.

BEST BBQ AND FRIES

Firestone

HILLARY JARUSZEWSKI AND NATE EDELMAN

Firestone has been perfecting its tri-tip and fries for 22 years. That’s longer than most Cal Poly students have been alive. Darnell Harris, the manager of Firestone, wouldn’t share the specific ingredients behind the Firestone tri-tip sandwich, but he said “all of the tri-trip is cooked long and slow with simple, clean ingredients and of course, love.” As for the fries, the “secret is the seasoning,” according to owner Hal Billingsley. The seasoning is made only for the four Firestone restaurants in existence. Firestone fries “go hand in hand with a tri-tip sandwich or a burger.” Billingsley estimates that Firestone sells 600 sides of fries per day. 9 / Poly Picks 2017

Billingsley takes pride in Firestone’s “freshness, quality and price,” while Harris takes great pride in the fact that Firestone acts as a place of unity among Cal Poly students and San Luis Obispo residents. In recent times these two groups often are at odds with one another, so Harris enjoys seeing the two groups come together and feel at home all under one roof. Harris wants to thank “Cal Poly students for keeping Firestone going.”

BEST ITALIAN

Giuseppe’s SARAH LOCATI

Despite its recent location change, Giuseppe’s has been voted Best Italian Food by Cal Poly Students yet again. Palazzo Giuseppe’s has moved from its original location on Court Street to the Sinsheimer Bros. building on Monterey Street. Owner Giuseppe DiFronzo assured customers that its original Cal Poly senior project menu, created in 1988, will remain the same. However, the restaurant features seasonal specials that are updated monthly. Recreation, parks and tourism administration junior Gil Carr, a loyal Giuseppe’s visitor, is pleased with the changes. “You can actually see the people cooking and preparing your food,” he said, “it feels like walking into a classy Italian kitchen and the food is still to die for.” Giuseppe’s cuisine can also be found at their booth during the San Luis Obispo Farmer’s Market or at their second restaurant location in Pismo Beach. Whether you’re in the mood for a massive slice of pizza or their specialty braciole e orecchiette, Cal Poly students agree that Giuseppe’s is the place for Italian food.

High Street Deli opened in 1927 and was purchased by the current owner, Randy (Doobie) Coates, in 2000 while attending Cal Poly. Growing up with an Italian grandpa, Coates and his family spent a lot of time making cold-cut sandwiches. Today, when it comes to his sandwiches, Coates said he “is always looking to blend classic Italian with new ideas and fresh, local California produce.” The most popular sandwich on the menu is the Dutch Punch. It is comprised of smoked turkey, bacon, jalapeño havarti, red onion, tomato, romaine, avocado and homemade chipotle mayo, on a freshly baked dutch crunch roll. Coates has a few things in the mix for High Street’s future. They are currently looking to open a second location in one of the neighboring coastal cities. Additionally, the “Munchie Mobile” will be ready by the summer. This fully restored 1952 International Harvester has been transformed into a food truck that will be available for events, parties and breweries. There are several cheap deals that may interest a Cal Poly student’s budget. Everyday at 4:20 p.m. sandwiches are priced at $6.00 and every Tuesday, students’ sandwiches are discounted at $6.00 with their Cal Poly ID. Lastly, every Wednesday all draft beers are $2.50 when you purchase a sandwich.

BEST BREAKFAST

Louisa’s Place SARAH LOCATI

On the weekends, you can spot the line outside of Louisa’s Place wrapped around Higuera Street. From open to close — 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. — the restaurant is packed with happy customers. “It feels amazing to win for the fifth year in a row. It helps to know our hard work is paying off,” owner Kay Sweeny said, “We want to give a big thank you to the students that have made Louisa’s Place what it is today.” Louisa’s is well known for being a traditional, full service family diner that has been open since 1976. Sweeny said that while they’re best known for serving American diner food they also offer vegetarian, gluten free and even some vegan options. Louisa’s does more than provide the community with delicious breakfast and lunch options. The family owned and operated establishment also gives back to over 20 organizations in the San Luis Obispo area, including the Family Care Network, CASA and the AIDS Support Network.

to eat for people with all sorts of eating habits, despite being known for vegetarian food. “Natural Cafe is somewhere I go to with friends when I need to feel good, food-wise and mood-wise” business administration junior Megan Mossman said. The cafe caters to those who are vegetarian, meat eaters, vegans, lactose intolerant or have other dietary restrictions. “The motto is to provide food people know, but with a healthy twist,” Miller said, also stating that one thing she’s most proud of is Natural Cafe’s promotion of a healthy lifestyle. Along with tasty and healthy food, Miller feels that one of the best ways to describe the cafe is welcoming, saying that “the staff goes above and beyond for customers and they just really care.” The great service can be attributed to the returning customers and familiar faces that always stop by, which create a fun and family-oriented atmosphere.

If you’re in the mood for a two-for-one huevos Wednesday deal, in need of catering, or are just craving some home style cooking, Louisa’s Place is the place.

“The best thing about Pluto’s is that I don’t have to break my bank trying to access fresh, healthy food,” parks and recreation junior Kara Salvestrin said. “Even though you are being served quality food and service, you can still dine out at Pluto’s on a budget.” Despite the fact that the quality is out of this world, the prices never pull students’ wallets into a black hole. In Pluto’s universe, customers get star treatment at a low cost.

BEST ON-CAMPUS DINING

BEST LATE NIGHT FOOD

Red Radish

SLO Donut Company

When it comes to on-campus dining, Cal Poly students prefer fresh, nutritious food that is both customizable and accessible. It’s no surprise then that Red Radish has earned Best On-Campus Food for the third year in a row.

With its unique flavors, spacious study tables and consistent events to enjoy, this donut shop is a local favorite in San Luis Obispo.

MAX REICHARDT

Red Radish boasts fresh Cal Poly produce, varying seasonally, along with cheese and dressings made in-house. They also give students a variety of options to choose from; tried and true house salads, or more unique ones. The “Hipster,” “Mustang Cobb,” “Nutty Professor,” “Poly Bird” and “SLO Steak Out” are quick and easy, but some cost over $10.00. The “build-yourown” option is much cheaper, starting at $5.50. “I believe students prefer Red Radish because it’s a healthier choice of food than most on campus,” said employee and business sophomore Beto Gamarra. “It gets hectic at times during peak hours, but they are really flexible with your schedule and my co-workers are really cool.” Since the dining choice was introduced in 2014, Red Radish made a splash with their healthy and unique take on traditional campus dining. Red Radish is open everyday from 10:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the University Union.

SLO Donut Company, more commonly known as SLODOCO, has been awarded Best Late Night Munchies of the year, which should come as no surprise to Cal Poly students. SLODOCO offers fresh donuts, free Wi-Fi and a fun atmosphere for students to enjoy, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “It’s the best place in town to fix that 3 a.m. sugar craving,” biomedical engineering senior Ashlyn Frost said. “They are in a great location, have a great atmosphere, and endless options of donuts. What more could you ask for?” Located on Foothill Boulevard, SLODOCO has recently expanded and now offers more study space as well as live entertainment during the week. Some popular events include weekly trivia on Sundays, SpongeBob marathons and Super Mario Smash Brothers tournaments.

“I really think the expansion has helped SLODOCO become more than just your average donut shop. People go there for the donuts, fun atmosphere and a place to hang-out,” construction management junior Brooke DePorto said, As long as SLODOCO keeps the prices affordable and the donuts fresh, its reputation as the go to donut shop in San Luis Obispo will continue to grow. BEST SPORTS BAR

Firestone

VINCENT RANDOLPH

Since its opening in 1995, Firestone has become a local favorite and tourist hotspot. There is no better place to catch a game while enjoying a signature tri-tip sandwich or enjoying one of the wide variety of beers Firestone offers. Firestone’s appeal begins even before walking through the doors, with the aroma of tri-tip present from around the block. The atmosphere upon entry is one any sports fan would love. BEST BREWERY

Firestone Walker ERIC WAGGONER

Firestone Walker Brewing Company has once again been voted Best Brewery by Cal Poly students. Driving through San Luis Obispo on Highway 101, it’s impossible to miss Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s logo, seemingly welcoming you to the Central Coast. The brewery, co-founded by brother-inlaw’s Adam Firestone and David Walker, began in the middle of Firestone Winery’s vineyard in 1996. Since Firestone Walker’s beginnings, it has specialized in brewing beer in barrels. At the end of every year, the brewery releases an anniversary barrel-aged strong ale, utilizing the expertise of their winemaker neighbors. It is hard to pick a favorite when it comes to Firestone Walker beer, but one which embodies the Central

Coast the most would have to be the 805. A refreshing and easy drinking blonde ale.

“Everyone’s always in a good mood, $2 beers and live music with your friends you can’t really beat that.”

“Our roots now shine with an entire brand, 805, dedicated to the Central Coast lifestyle of artists, ocean, wave, mountains and dirt,” Firestone Walker master blender Jim Crooks said.

Since 1994, Frog & Peach has given San Luis Obispo a great source of nightly entertainment. The pub provides a welcoming environment that can make any person feel comfortable. A live band sets a dynamic tone upon entry and the outside patio is always a great setting.

The brewery defines the underlying ethos for those who reside in the 805 — “do not what you’re told, only what you tell yourself.” Within the central coast there is no place for something that does not exemplify quality. “Quality and tradition are two words that have always defined the Firestone Walker Brewing Company,” Crooks said. “From the early beginnings and through the years of double digit production growth the mantra has always been quality first.”

THANK YOU CAL POLY FOR VOTING MOTHER’S TAVERN AS THE BEST BAR IN SLO! 23 / Poly Picks 2017

BEST BAR

BEST COFFEE

Mother’s Tavern

Scout Coffee Co.

Mother’s Tavern, also known as MoTav, is the Best Bar in San Luis Obispo. MoTav is a full service, family-friendly restaurant during the day and a local favorite bar at night. The décor is authentic and offers an old-school pub feel, but transforms into a nightclub vibe once the DJ begins spinning tracks.

Scout Coffee Co. gives customers the opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee, and “get inspired,” owner Sara Pederson says.

MoTav’s nightclub operates seven nights a week from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. and offers daily entertainment including Pint Night on Tuesdays, TOT night on Wednesdays featuring tater tots, 2 for 1 drinks on Thursdays, live music on Fridays and DJ Dance Parties on Fridays and Saturdays. With 32 craft beers on tap, local wines and specialty cocktails, there is something for everyone’s drinking tastes.

serving the San Luis Obispo community for more than three years. Their specialty coffee is served downtown on Garden Street, and in their recently opened store in the University Square Shopping Center at 880 Foothill Blvd.

LAUREN GOFF

Liberal studies junior Shelly Paradis loves going to MoTav on the weekends. “It has an area for dancing and also has a spacious bar,” Paradis said. “The bartenders are all super kind and make fun drinks.” In addition to their nightlife, MoTav is also a local favorite for burgers and macaroni and cheese. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Cal Poly students can get in the bar for free on Thursday nights with their PolyCard.

KARA SALVESTRIN

Scout Coffee Co. is owned and operated by Jon and Sara Pederson and has been

The natural and aesthetically pleasing aura lets people sit in an open and familiar space, where most of the furnishings have been recycled and given a second life. The natural feeling is calming and inspiring to customers coming in to relax, work or study. They go the extra mile to assure their customers are paying for value and extraordinary service. Scout’s goal is to “make customers happy as soon as they walk in the door,” according to Scout barista Lindsay Lemkuil. Although customers pay a few extra dollars more than a typical cup of coffee, they are paying for “world class coffee grounds.” “All of our ingredients are fresh. Our coffee comes from the best places in the world, like Guatemala and Indonesia. It’s then roasted in-house through HoneyCo Coffee” Pederson said. Even the pastries are made by hand every morning. What differentiates Scout from other coffee shops is the hard work and passion used to start the business. Its iconic ‘Drink It In’ signage on its cups and wall insinuates that you’re “drinking in life,” Sara says.

BEST WINERY

Tolosa

CELINA OSEGUERA

Tolosa has been voted Cal Poly students’ favorite winery in San Luis Obispo, but that isn’t the winery’s only connection — the university’s Baggett Stadium is named after Robin Baggett, a Cal Poly baseball alumnus and one of three founders of Tolosa. The other founders are winemakers Jim Kress and Jean Hoefliger.

Tolosa is also known for hiring Cal Poly students for internships, specifically during the harvest. Students of legal drinking age come for the famous Tolosa Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. The grapes are tempered perfectly by the Pacific Ocean winds that travel down the coast. “We encourage [students] to come and taste our wines,” Kress said. “[We] encourage [students] to bring their parents for wine tasting as well.”

There are many wineries and vineyards in San Luis Obispo, but according to Kress, Tolosa has set itself Cal Poly wine and viticulture students can test soil apart from the competition with its winemaking for projects, harvest grapes and produce wine on site, practices and special connection to Cal Poly and Kress said. the community. “It’s the culture of our wines and our dedication to sustainable agriculture and being solid members of the [San Luis Obispo] community,” Kress said.

ACTIVE BEST BIKE SHOP

BEST BEACH

Foothill Cyclery

Avila Beach

If you’re in need of a friendly, fast and knowledgeable bike shop, then Foothill Cyclery is the place for you.

Today, Avila Beach is mostly known as a hotspot for beach goers during warmer months. But, the beach has some surprisingly rich history behind its name and location. Named to commemorate rancher Miguel Ávila, the beach town was originally established in the later part of the 19th century.

SABINA KHADR

Conveniently located just more than a mile from campus, Foothill Cyclery offers bikes, parts, accessories, maintenance and repair services. “The store focus has shifted to a lot of community,” Cal Poly alumnus and Foothill Cylcery owner Josh Cohen. The bike shop aims to be a social place that helps customers experience “the enjoyment of riding bikes,” according to Cohen. Foothill Cyclery’s full service center frequently provides bike tune-ups and flat tire changes to students. While bikes are being serviced, customers can relax in the waiting area, which is fully equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi, a new counter, armchairs, TV, coffee and beverages. Foothill Cyclery also provides pickup and delivery services for those without access to bike racks or cars, commonly delivering new bikes to students during Week of Welcome. Since opening in 1989, Foothill Cyclery has been dedicated to provide “all the basics of what most kids need to keep rolling along to school,” Cohen said.

RACHEL FOOTE

While the town saw its beginnings as San Luis Obispo’s main shipping port, its career as a tourist destination started not long after Luigi Marre built the city’s first hotel. The town attracted visitors from both northern California and southern California. Few remnants of the original Avila Beach remain, but among the most notable is the Point San Luis Light, a lighthouse built in 1890 as a result of the many shipping boat accidents. However, it is not Avila’s humble beginnings that created the town Cal Poly students know and love today, but its transformation in the 1990s. A large portion of the town was uprooted and rebuilt after corroding pipes underneath the then-existing construction had allowed decades of oil seepage and pollution. Much of what is now known as Front Street was completely rebuilt, and walkways, new homes, businesses and beaches were added. Today, Avila Beach is San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly’s favorite place to catch waves and rays. “It’s a beautiful place to go to,” liberal arts and engineering senior Denise Garcia said, “it’s not super close to here, but it’s close enough that it’s like a little getaway.”

BEST GOLF COURSE CELINA OSEGUERA

Whether you want to go for a full round of golf or just get in some putting practice, Dairy Creek Golf Course and Driving Range is the place to go. With its proximity to Cal Poly and affordable rates for college-aged visitors, Dairy Creek is the student’s choice for a prime golfing experience. Students have definitely taken advantage of the low young adult rates given to golfers between the ages of 19 to 25 years old. Their rate is only $18, compared to the $40 adult rate.

Student athletes also take advantage of the course and grounds. Dairy Creek sometimes serves as a practice course for the Cal Poly men’s and women’s golf teams. Dairy Creek and the Division 1 golf teams have had this arrangement for the past two years. The club golf team gets a discounted rate at the driving range. “We want to be a partner with Cal Poly and support the students and the student athletes,” Clay said. Though Dairy Creek is used by many golfers, Clay appreciates the special connection Dairy Creek has with Cal Poly and its students.

“It’s really fun for us to have the college so close to the golf course and to see the students and faculty using “That’s probably why we got voted favorite golf course,” the golf course,” Clay said. “It’s really great to have that relationship.” general manager Joel Clay said. And if you get hungry while on the green, there is also a restaurant on the grounds. 33 / Poly Picks 2017

BEST RECREATION CENTER CLASS

Zumba

Davis believes the success of the class is because of its versatility that appeals to people of all fitness levels, “Anyone can do it. Even if you can’t dance, you can still do Zumba.”

TAYLOR BARNETT

The rhythm of the music and the enthusiasm of the instructor make Zumba a unique class offered in the Cal Poly Recreation Center. Zumba is a dance-based fitness class that encourages individual style while combining cardio with fun, upbeat movements. Hayley Rentfrow, a Zumba instructor at Cal Poly, attributes the success of the class to the independence it allows the participants. “I think with Zumba you have a lot more of your own style that you can put into things. Whereas in other classes there is a lot more structure,” she said. Because the course is taught by three different instructors, each brings a unique style and music to the class, allowing students to experience each class differently. Rentfrow says that each of the three instructors uses different songs and dances, which ensures that students are getting a variety of different Zumba styles and workouts. Being able to add individual style to a class provides students the opportunity to express themselves while working out. Zumba also allows participants to engage in the workout without feeling too exhausted or fatigued from the activity. “You feel like you got a workout but you’re not dying,” aerospace engineering freshman Lacey Davis said. However, some people prefer Zumba over other recreation center classes because it does not require a certain skillset to enjoy the class.

BEST GETAWAY

Montana de Oro MAGGIE CONAWAY

Located about forty minutes outside San Luis Obispo, Montaña de Oro is a getaway spot that seems to have something for everyone. With beautiful views, hikes, bike trails and campsites, Montaña de Oro allows many opportunities for adventurers to have unforgettable experiences. Biological sciences sophomore Nicole Allen stated, “I like exploring around Spooner’s Cove and climbing up on the rocks to see the waves crash and watch the sunset. It really is a great getaway!” In addition to offering beautiful views from areas such as Spooner’s Cove, Montaña de Oro also offers countless hiking and biking trails that visitors can also enjoy. Cal Poly student Sami Jones shared, “I’m not a great hiker, but Montaña de Oro has hikes for someone like me that doesn’t want a traumatic athletic experience, and also has hikes for my friends that love the challenging trails.” Montaña de Oro as a whole provides countless options for anyone looking to explore and appreciate the beauty of the San Luis Obispo county. Whether it’s a challenging hike, a scenic camping experience close to SLO, or a place to watch a beautiful sunset with a group of friends, Montaña de Oro provides an escape into nature for anyone looking to create memories.

BEST HIKE

Bishop Peak SABINA KHADR

The top of Bishop Peak features a panoramic view of Cal Poly, downtown San Luis Obispo and neighboring peaks. A challenging hike with spectacular views, this is a favorite destination among members of the San Luis Obispo community and tourists alike. At a distance of a little over 3.5 miles round trip, the entire hike can be completed in around 2 hours at a steady walking pace from one of three access points. The hike begins in a wooded area near the bottom of the trail. As the hike continues, the rocky terrain gets more steep with several switchbacks leading up to the summit.

Earlybirds who hike at sunrise can experience the spectacular view at over 1500 ft. while perched above the morning clouds. There are two benches to rest on at the top of Bishop Peak, however many hikers continue past the trail end and climb the boulders for a panoramic view. The trail is one of the three stops on the San Luis Obispo Tri-Tip Challenge where participants hike the Cal Poly ‘P’, Cerro San Luis Obispo (Madonna) and Bishop Peak. The day ends with eating a tri-tip sandwich from Firestone Grill. Though Bishop Peak is traditionally a hiking trail, more adventurous students like to take it a bit further. “I love [Bishop] Peak because I get to climb and highline up there,” mathematics graduate student Blaine Quackenbush said.

“Our speaker lineup was a diverse group as well, with each of them coming from various disciplines. Seeing so many people come together to share and experience ideas new and different from their own was the most rewarding part,” business administration junior Hensley said. Hensley, while commenting on the success of this year’s program, teases at what the future holds for TedXCalPoly 2017: “this year it’ll be back on an even bigger and better scale, so hopefully everyone keeps their eyes open. It’s only just the beginning.”

BEST ASI EVENT

KCPR

Spring Stampede

KCPR, Cal Poly’s campus radio station, broadcasts music 24/7. Anyone can listen to the station on kcpr. org or by tuning in to 91.3 FM.

Thousands of students came to the Sports Complex Fields in a seemingly endless crowd. The sky was clear and the air was warm, the perfect day for a music festival. Spring Stampede 2016 was headlined by T-Pain and opened by Jai Wolf and Box the Oxford.

RACHEL BERMAN

KCPR was founded in 1968 when two college students were experimenting with radio and music in their dorm room. 49 years later, KCPR is in the process of becoming a media entity that writes articles, posts videos, promotes giveaways and hosts local events.

MONIQUE GEISEN

Spring Stampede has become one of Associated Students Inc.’s (ASI) most popular events after their first year in 2015. To student manager of ASI Events, Brayden Antonio, it makes sense that students love Spring Stampede so much.

Along with broadcasting music for the San Luis Obispo community, KCPR is also a place where students can “Spring Stampede is an event that I believe defines come together to talk about art, music and culture. ‘ASI Events,’” Antonio said. “It is an opportunity for Philosophy junior Chase Johns works on the KCPR our team to put on an event that brings together ASI, marketing team and hosts his own radio show. campus organizations and the Cal Poly community for an awesome evening.” “I think now that people know who we are and where we have come from students are really getting excited about KCPR as an area for disseminating music culture,” Johns said. Photo by: Andrew Epperson

In mid-February 2016, ASI released a survey allowing students to weigh in on what kind of musicians they wanted to see. Using this feedback, ASI was able to bring both T-Pain and Jai Wolf to the campus. Physics junior Joshua Solomon remembers the concert fondly as something unique, a mix between a traditional concert and a music festival, exclusive to Cal Poly students. “It was nice being able to run around in a field with your friends and all these people. There were good vibes.” Solomon said.

Baker Science

Scout Coffee

Intentionally built in the center of Cal Poly’s campus, the Warren J. Baker Center for Science and Mathematics fulfills its goal of advancing Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing philosophy.

Locally owned and operated by Jon and Sara Peterson, Scout Coffee Co. not only provides its customers the highest quality coffee available and an exemplary aesthetic, but also makes each visit to Scout better than the last.

KAITLIN COOK

Students lucky enough to have classes in Baker enjoy the clean, open and air-conditioned spaces. Only four years old, Baker has proven its potential for learning, studying and even sneaking in the occasional nap. Microbiology sophomore Renee Butler offered insight into the best spots in the building. “The best place to study in Baker is the fourth floor by the [organic chemistry] teachers’ [offices] because they always have their doors open and they’re always willing to help you,” Butler said. “It has a more relaxed, less stressful, positive environment focused on learning and not just cramming.” Microbiology sophomore Allie Tammen wondered why anyone would want to study anywhere else. “Baker is good for collaborative spaces because they have a lot of whiteboards,” Tammen said. “Whiteboards are a major key.” To some, Baker might seem like a hidden gem, but to others it’s an essential foundation to their educational experience. If you don’t already enjoy the study rooms and open collaborative spaces of Baker then take a chance to explore it. Maybe you’ll discover the place that will make your study experience a little less mundane and put a new spin on your daily routine.

There are many great professors on campus, but few professors claimed the title of Best Professor at Cal Poly. Known for her passion and commitment to students, biological sciences professor Cameron Shields was chosen as Best Professor for 2017. “I love teaching anatomy and physiology. What I really like is when we’re talking about a really difficult subject and you can see the look on their face when they finally get it,” Shields said. “It’s like a lightbulb goes on.”

BEST ON CAMPUS HOUSING Poly Canyon Village CHRISTIAN LAUBACHER

She tells stories from her career as an eye surgeon to provide context and application for the principles her students study.

In the fall of 2008, Poly Canyon Village (PCV) was just in its infancy. Only five of the nine apartment buildings were completed, with the last four finished in 2009.

“What I really liked...was the ability to help my patients,” Shields said. “Here now, as a full-time lecturer, what I really enjoy is helping my students go on to their next step.”

The living community offers 615 apartments and two parking lots containing 1,926 parking spaces. PCV provides amenities including a post office, two half-size basketball courts, a sand volleyball court and a market. There is a community center with a pool table, ping pong table, a small exercise and music room. The complex also features a swimming pool open year round to PCV residents.

Shields also serves as mentor for many of her students. In addition to being a BEACoN Mentor, helping underrepresented students, she also loves being a resource for her pre-health and pre-medicine students. According to Shields, one of the the greatest joys of her job is hearing from students who have been accepted into professional or graduate school.

For a quick bite in the PCV plaza, you can stop in at Jamba Juice, Einstein Bros. Bagels or Tacos To-Go Mexican Grill.

“It’s a great honor to me to know that my students are appreciating my teaching style,” Shields said.

two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room. There are three to five bedrooms with options to have a single room with a lofted bed or share a room in bunk beds. Some of the apartments have a study room for students to share. Custodial staff clean the shared spaces once a week. PCV also has learning communities to help with student’s success. There is the Sophomore Success Program, which allows students to take advantage of on-campus resources, while the Transfer Success Program provides opportunities for collaboration amongst transfer students and the iCommunity 2.0 works to develop students’ entrepreneurial skills. Computer science junior Fernando Diaz, likes the availability of study spaces, “I like that I can study in my apartment or I’m able to go thirty feet to a study nook for a more collaborative vibe.” Bioresource and agricultural engineering sophomore Nayeli Rodriguez appreciates most about PCV are the various social events. “I enjoy the community feel that I get from attending events. I can socialize when I want, but am able to retreat to the quiet of my apartment,” Rodriguez said.

BEST OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING

Valencia Apartments CAROLINE STER

Valencia Student Apartments provides housing for Cal Poly and Cuesta students, providing a fitness center, pool, game room, study center and more. “It is much more student friendly than many of the other apartments in the area,” mechanical engineering sophomore Samuel Sayre said. “I think it is just overall a low stress easy place to live, especially for second years.” 45 / Poly Picks 2017

Located less than a mile from Cal Poly and coming fully furnished, the Valencia Student apartments are very convenient for students. Each unit comes with a couch, chair, coffee table, end table, TV stand and two to three stools in the common area. The bedrooms each come with a full size mattress and frame, four drawers, nightstand, desk and chair. “Privacy is the number one thing people like about living here,” leasing manager Cherie Dart said. “We do single rooms and I think the students enjoy having more privacy.” The rates for these units vary based on the package chosen, but each bedroom is priced between $850 and $930 for a private bedroom. There are even discounts of up to $100 off the base unit rent available that are determined by academic performance. “The staff goes out of their way to make living here as nice as possible,” biology junior Kasey Fitzsimmons said. “They give you the first five days of the month to pay rent instead of a strict first day of the month deadline.” “The overall feel of our complex is pretty mellow,” Dart said. “But we are very understanding of college life whether it’s morning or night.” Designed to meet students needs, it is no surprise that Valencia Student Apartments won best off-campus student housing.

BEST FRATERNITY

BEST SORORITY

Sigma Nu

Kappa Alpha Theta

The Kappa Pi Chapter of Sigma Nu joined the Cal Poly community in 1985. Since then, it has been striving to fulfill its vision of “Excelling with Honor,” to strengthen its chapter and give back to the community. This year Sigma Nu is awarded the Poly Pick for best fraternity.

Kappa Alpha Theta sorority has been shaping leaders and building lifelong friendships since its establishment at Cal Poly in 1989.

KARA SALVESTRIN

“Through our founding principles of Love, Truth, and Honor, Sigma Nu fosters an environment for men to excel in all facets of life. We consistently achieve our vision of ‘excelling with honor’ as one brotherhood,” Sigma Nu chapter president Seth Callen said. Together, its members have been able to positively impact the community of San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly through the values it has adopted as a chapter. Sigma Nu has been giving back to the San Luis Obispo Community generously throughout the years.

GABI TRAPANI

“Theta is made up of passionate women who strive to make an impact,” Chapter President Kayce Murray said. “Theta’s tagline is ‘leading women’ and I see the members in our chapter exemplify this every day through their involvement on and off campus.”

“Theta is made up of passionate women who strive to make an impact.”

“We strive to do everything we can to strengthen the relationship between the student body, greek life and the community,” communications junior Riley Griffin, said,

Murray mentions Theta’s sisterhood, “The bond that we share is incredible. I have so much love for my sisters, and simply seeing them around campus makes my day so much better,” she said.

Its main annual philanthropies, Turn the Tables on Sexual Assault and Ducky Derby, have raised a combined amount exceeding $11,000 this year. These funds are donated to the local nonprofit organizations, Jack’s Helping Hand, an organization that provides support to “children with cancer and special needs,” and SAFER, a confidential “advocacy, education and support resource” to victims of sexual assault, according to its website.

Along with sisterhood, another main focus of the sorority is its philanthropic services. Theta leads a variety of philanthropy events throughout the year to raise money for organizations such as CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) which fights for and protects children’s rights.

BEST CLUB SPORT

Club Lacrosse BETH STRUTZ

“Lacrosse is known as the fastest sport on two feet,” mechanical engineering senior Claire Kingston said. She has been on the team since her freshman year of college. Kingston is the president of the Cal Poly women’s club lacrosse team, which holds the record for highest number of national titles and tournament appearances in the country. Lacrosse is a fast-paced, competitive sport. According to Kingston, it is extremely complex and difficult to master, but incredibly rewarding. “I love that there is always more to learn and there are always ways to improve,” Kingston said. 48 / Poly Picks 2017

The women’s club teams work to improve their game. Cal Poly has both a women’s A and B team, with 49 players total. During the season, these players typically practice five days a week. Both the A and B teams have been incredibly successful this season, and competed in the Western Women’s Lacrosse League. The B team won their league playoffs and the A team is headed to Salt Lake City to compete in their eighth national tournament. In addition to her dedication and performance, Kingston emphasized the inclusive and fun nature of the teams. “Our program is unique in that we can accommodate every skill level. We pride ourselves in being welcoming to everyone and maintaining two very strong and successful teams,” Kingston said. “We know how to work hard and also how to have fun and support each other at the same time.”

BEST ACADEMIC CLUB

CPAC

BETH STRUTZ

The Cal Poly Accounting Club (CPAC) is this year’s Best Academic Club. Like many other clubs at Cal Poly, it’s focused toward a particular area of study: the accounting concentration in the Orfalea College of Business (OCOB). However, the scope of what CPAC does goes far beyond academic support. “Our main goals are to help students develop professionally, help students get connected to firms and to help build a community and a network of other accounting students,” business administration sophomore Jun Bang said. Bang is leading as CPAC’s president for the 2017-18 academic year, previously serving as director of social activities during his freshman year.

At the height of the past academic year CPAC had more than 370 members and was one of the largest clubs on campus. CPAC alumni often come back to speak to or advise current club members. CPAC adviser and Executive Director for Accounting Excellence Sheri Boscaro is dedicated to the club and works with a board of 12 officers and various committees to help students succeed. One of the primary reasons Bang cites for the clubs continued growth and success is the three different groups who come together under CPAC: firms, faculty and students. Through CPAC, students are able to connect with big four firms — the leading firms in accounting. They also connect with smaller firms and industry firms. “What makes this club so special is that it’s been around for decades, around 30 years. I think that’s really what all the success goes back to, is all the hard work put in over the years,” Bang said. “And we had a really selfless board this last year, who really gave up a lot of their time to help students succeed, and that’s a major part in why we saw the success that we did.”

Bluebird

Near most students’ housing and just a short walk off campus, @Nails provides an easily accessible and luxurious environment for Cal Poly students to relax and get their nails done.

Cal Poly students recently chose Bluebird Salon as the Best Haircut in San Luis Obispo. Dedicated to providing customers with an unforgettable salon experience, Bluebird wants their customers to leave with a smile on their face.

HILLARY JARUSZEWSKI

Several hundred nail polish colors line the walls of the salon like rainbows in the sky, but if that weren’t enough, @Nails also offers customers gel polishes, acrylics and custom nail designs. After selecting a color, customers are seated and offered a complimentary beverage. Customers can choose from water, soda, coffee and tea. For those 21 years and older, options include a variety of alcoholic beverages, like champagne and wine.

ELENA DEANGELIS

Owner Ariel Shannon started her business nine years ago, inspired to “find out a way to satisfy [her] client’s needs because mine weren’t being met.” Bluebird is a full service salon, providing hair, makeup, waxing and spa services. The modern yet whimsical space provides a high-end salon experience that is still approachable.

Providing the best service possible is standard for @ Nails. Vince Tran, the manager, was humble when asked what made Cal Poly students vote it as the Best Nail Salon two years in a row.

The Bluebird stylists are highly skilled with each of the 40 stylists specializing in different areas. A positive, supportive environment is very important to Bluebird, and is largely accomplished by the relationships the stylists cultivate with their individual clients.

“@Nails hasn’t changed much over the last year and keeps doing what it does best,” Tran said.

Shannon thinks that clients at Bluebird acknowledge and appreciate the effort from the staff.

SHOPPING BEST MEN’S CLOTHING

Urban Outfitters HANNAH BENSON

Once again, Urban Outfitters keeps the top spot for Men’s Fashion among Cal Poly students. With about 300 globally located stores, the brand’s style has dominated the fashion scene for years, especially on college campuses. The store caters to both men and women, offering an assortment of clothing pieces, accessories, home decor and unique gifts.

“Lucian knit shorts and button-down shirts are our most popular items bought in the men’s department,” Bettencourt said. Both items come in a variety of colors and prints to cater to different preferences. The celebration of steering away from the norm is the reason why the store maintains a steady customer base among Cal Poly students, who are currently in the process of altering the world in their own unique ways.

“About 75 percent of the male customers are Cal Poly students. There’s not really any other clothing store like it for guys in town,” manager of the men’s department Matt Bettencourt said. Urban Outfitters is known for its particularly trendy style, which is even expressed through the layout of the three-story downtown store with its aesthetically-pleasing open space. The location of the store in relation to others adds to its hipster feel. Just steps away from the storefront on Monterey Street, you can find latte art in Ascendo Cafe and a diverse vinyl collection in Boo Boo Records.

The studio has moved multiple times and is now on Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo. The shop offers tattoos of all sizes and a large variety of piercings. Its artists, atmosphere and customer service make Traditional Tattoo a recurring Poly Picks winner. Traditional Tattoo has eight tattoo artists and two piercing experts.
