EXCITEMENT AS WE LOOK FORWARD TO AN AMAZING YEAR FOR MUSTO The sailing calendar for 2017 looks very exciting. We won’t be far into the year before we find out the winner of the Vendée Globe, which some would argue is the toughest race in offshore sailing. Then again, the competitors in the Volvo Ocean Race might have something to say about that as they face a firehose of spray on board their Volvo Ocean 65 keelboats when the 2017/18 edition begins towards the end of the year in October. Sandwiched between those two round-the-world classics is another big one, the America’s Cup in Bermuda. Musto is intimately involved in all three of these events and, as the technology and the hardware becomes ever faster, the demands on the athletes intensify, which leads to a need for greater comfort and protection. In the America’s Cup the AC50 foiling catamarans are hitting speeds of almost 50 knots. That’s about 57mph, if you’ve ever stuck your hand out of the car window at that speed you’ll know that it feels windy! Perhaps even more importantly is what happens when these hydrofoiling cats nosedive and go from full-pelt to a dead-stop in the blink of an eye. There are no seat belts on an AC50, so one of the requirements from Franck Cammas and his sailors at Groupama Team France has been to intergrate impact protection into their clothing. This has been a fascinating new challenge for our designers at Musto and we’re getting great feedback from Franck and the team. Working with world-class sailors is the way that we keep Musto at the forefront of technology, and we’re working with three dedicated, brave solo sailors in the Vendée Globe, Vincent Riou, Jérémie Beyou and Armel Le Cléac’h. When you’re racing singlehanded non-stop around the world, you need everything to be reliable, to deliver exactly what you expect of your equipment for those three gruelling months at sea. And that includes what you’re wearing. All these high-level developments trickle through to the rest of the sport, and Musto is also closely involved in the Rolex Fastnet Race and Cowes Week during the summer of 2017. It’s going to be a fascinating year and we’re proud that Musto continues to play such a strong role in keeping our diverse and ever-evolving sport moving forwards. PETER SMITH CEO

REBUILDING YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONFIDENCE Since 2003, we have been proud to be supporters of The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. The trust works with every young person in the Principal Treatment Centre in the UK, which provides essential assistance to young people between the ages of 8-24 who are in recovery from cancer. The centre’s objective is to help these individuals reengage with education or employment, rebuilding their confidence through sailing and watersports. With the trust taking 534 young people on trips in 2016 and 2017 seeing the launch of an exciting new national initiative, the trust’s diligent approach to their goal is yielding real results. We’re proud to be collaborating with the trust on this initiative – keep updated on its progress or donate by visiting: www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org
THE LARGEST CLEANUP IN HISTORY The Ocean Cleanup estimates that over 5 trillion pieces of plastic currently litter the ocean. Spurred on by this vast pollution and its destructive effect on the ecosystem, this organisation has embarked on the largest cleanup in history. Their ambitious objective has resulted in the development of advanced technologies: passive systems that use the ocean currents to funnel plastic into an artificial coastline where it can be collected and recycled. The Ocean Cleanup is currently trialling a 100 meterlong barrier in the harsh conditions of the North Sea, allowing them to check that it can withstand its severe environment before attempting to use it in the planned clean-up of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. To assist their engineers in assessing the functionality of the barrier, we’ve supplied them with our most resilient Musto kit to ensure they are fully-protected in the inhospitable North Sea. SAILING TAKES OFF AGAIN America’s Cup – the oldest trophy in international sport – is due to return in 2017, and will see wing-powered foiling cats flying across the water at speeds exceeding 50 MPH. We can’t wait to be on the start line in Bermuda with Groupama Team France, particularly since we’ve collaborated with them to develop a phenomenal new neoprene range with impact protection. This range has been designed to help protect the new breed of foiling sailor against the knocks they receive as boats get faster and faster. See page 38 for an interview with Groupama Team France skipper, Franck Cammas. www.groupamateamfrance.americascup.com
LIFE AT THE EXTREME Next year marks the return of the world’s most premier yacht race, the Volvo Ocean Race. This exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavour started over 37 years ago and is still going strong today. We are the Official Sponsors of the Volvo Ocean Race and supplied kit to over 70% of the fleet in the 2014-15 race, including the overall race winners, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. Not only did this ensure that sailors were fully protected in the harshest environments on the planet, it also meant that we were provided with invaluable feedback to help us tweak and strengthen our designs for future lines. We’re looking forward to this ultimate kit test starting again. We’ll be at every race stopover around the world with our Official Volvo Ocean Race Merchandise Collection. www.volvooceanrace.com

TO FOIL OR NOT TO FOIL The start of 2017 will answer the question on all Vendee Globe fans’ lips – to foil or not to foil. Race favourites were divided: some experimented with a new foiling design while others chose to remain without in case they suffered reliability issues during the gruelling non-stop, single-handed, around the world race.

VENDEE GLOBE HIGHLIGHTS
ARMEL LE CLEAC’H
For Armel Le Cléac’h and his third assault on the Vendée Globe, there is only one outcome that will make the ambitious Frenchman happy. “I’ve been second twice. For me those two second places were very different because eight years ago - my first Vendée - I ended up second thanks to a lot of luck. A number of boats ahead of me failed to finish the race, which opened up the way to finish on the podium.
“But four years later it was another kind of race because I was racing for victory almost until the end. So that time it was disappointing to be so close but to miss out on winning. This year there’s only one goal, and that’s to win. Being second again, or any other position would be a failure and a disappointment because I have to do better. I am a sportsman, a competitor, so we try to do better each time and that’s what I am trying to do this time.” The 39-year-old skipper of Banque Populaire is one of the most meticulous and best prepared sailors in the offshore sailing world and for his three-month race solo circumnavigation of the globe he likes to leave as little to chance as possible. He is very comfortable with his choice of Musto to keep him operating at the highest level for the 90-odd days that he’ll be at sea.

“For my first Vendée Globe, I wasn’t working with Musto at the time. I had an arrangement with another company, but I was still using some of Musto’s outer layers because for me they were still the most high-performance option out there, offering the highest level of waterproofness for a challenge as tough as the Vendée. Then when I started working with Banque Populaire back in 2011, during the build-up to the last Vendée, that’s when I started working closely with Musto and I have been very happy with our partnership ever since.”
“BUT FOUR YEARS LATER IT WAS ANOTHER KIND OF RACE BECAUSE I WAS

RACING FOR VICTORY MY FAVOURITE PIECE ALMOST UNTIL THE END.” OF MUSTO KIT A Vendée skipper has to cope with the whole range of climates and conditions, from the stifling heat of the tropics to the unrelenting chill of the Southern Ocean. “For a long time, Musto have been at the forefront of using different layers to deal with changing temperatures,” says Le Cléac’h. “The layering system was already working very well for me in the last Vendée and the products have continued to improve since then, so I have no worries about comfort when racing around the world.”
There’s no getting away from it, the modern IMOCA 60 is a very wet boat. There is always a lot of water washing across the deck, so for me the HPX GORE-TEX® Pro Series Dry Smock is my favourite piece of kit. The latex sleeves do a great job of keeping you dry no matter how wet things get, and you have to remember that sometimes we are completely immersed. The top of the body is completely protected: arms, back, chest, neck. We are dry and well protected, but it’s also sufficiently lightweight and flexible that it doesn’t restrict movement. The HPX GORE-TEX® Pro Series Dry Smock means I can work hard, stay dry, and keep operating at the best of my abilities.

MEET MARK TURNER Mark Turner is one of the most influential individuals in the sailing world. As founder of Offshore Challenges he was instrumental in launching and managing Ellen MacArthur’s career, helping turn her into a household name. His company, Offshore Challenges, has been responsible for many innovations in commercial sailing including building the Extreme Sailing Series into one of the most successful and hottest commercial brands in the sport. A couple of years back, Turner turned down an offer to run the America’s Cup but, when approached to become the CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race, it was an offer he couldn’t refuse. A competitor in the Whitbread Round the World Race back in the 80s, this race has been a lifelong passion for the Englishman, and he hasn’t wasted any time in laying out his own vision for the Volvo Ocean Race.

“We saw legs being won and lost by minutes, sometimes even just a matter of seconds,” explains Mark. “So the difference between winning and losing comes down to the tiniest details. Volvo Ocean Race sailors have to be perfectionists in everything they do, because it’s only with that attitude that they can have a hope of winning. When the design options are no longer there for you to explore, you have to look in even greater detail at every aspect of your campaign, including what you wear.”
kind of kit, or any of the equipment on the boat is pushed as hard as it is in the Volvo Ocean Race.” This is one of the reasons why Musto is so keen and so proud to be the official clothing partner of the Volvo Ocean Race. “I think from a technical perspective Musto has been the most consistent performer for a long time now,” says Turner. “If you want to know you’re going to be protected in the best possible way in an offshore environment, you will never go wrong with Musto. And I think any sailor would agree with that. There are plenty of other products, obviously, so there are choices, but the one brand that you know from an offshore perspective that is going to give you at least as good, if not better, than anything else, is going to be Musto.”
“ FROM A TECHNICAL PERSPECTIVE MUSTO HAS BEEN THE MOST CONSISTENT PERFORMER FOR A LONG TIME NOW ” Aside from the one-design nature of the Volvo Ocean Race, another element of Frostad’s innovations that Turner has taken and elevated to a much higher level, is to encourage female participation in the race:
“If you just rewind back through your leg and think of the one time you were a little bit wetter or a little bit colder or a little bit too hot, and you just have five minutes where you didn’t trim the sail as well or you’re slightly uncomfortable at the helm and you’ve lost 100 metres as a result of missing a couple of waves. Ultimately, that level of detail is now the difference between winning and losing, or beating the boat in front or dropping a place. It’s the collection of all of those details that makes the difference to winning or losing. It’s about getting your clothing right, your nutrition, team work, everything. I don’t think there’s an environment where any
“Since the race began, there have been nearly 2,000 male sailors and just 106 women. There have been decades with no women in the race at all. The Volvo 70s were just too physical a boat for women to manage, but then with the last race and the VO65 we had Team SCA which was great for getting women back into the race, with a very well funded and professionally run campaign.” But Team SCA was in danger of turning into another one-off female programme, and for all that hard-earned female experience to wither away once more. Turner is keen to see continuity. The best way to do that, in his view, is to encourage mixed crews:
“It’s a no-brainer really. Diversity, equality of opportunity are massive issues in modern society and in the business world. The business world has men and women working alongside each other but it’s still very rare in sport. The great thing about sailing is that we have a sport that can do it, and do it very successfully. So we have written the rule to the point where you’ll be compromised if you decide to compete with an all-male option.” So Turner and his team have devised five different crewing configurations which he believes will give the race teams some interesting dilemmas. “We spoke to quite a few skippers, both definite and potential, to work out the line that we need to draw in the rule so that the teams wouldn’t go all men. Time will tell if we’ve got that line right or not.” As to the argument that the Volvo Ocean Race should be about having the best sailors, regardless of their sex, Turner replies: “I respect that view, because this race is the pinnacle event, the hardest thing to win. But I think it’s OK to say that we should have the very best men and women, because as a sport we’re able to do that. I don’t believe that weakens the gold standard of the Volvo Ocean Race. I think it makes the race a stronger proposition than ever.” Five crew combinations for the 2017/18 Volvo Ocean Race
7 sailors = all men 8 sailors = 7 men + 1 woman 9 sailors = 7 men + 2 women 10 sailors = 5 men + 5 women 11 sailors = 11 women
| VOLVO OCEAN RACE |
One of the big changes brought in by his predecessor Knut Frostad was to remove the design element of the race and introduce the one-design Volvo Ocean 65 keelboat. This is a new aspect of the race that Turner believes is taking the Volvo in the right direction. The old model was too expensive. Aside from slashing the costs of running a campaign, the onedesign element of the 2014/15 edition also produced some of the closest leg finishes we’ve ever seen in the event’s 44-year history.

GETTING KIDS INTO SAILING By Ian Walker
Children gain a lot from being on the water but there are some common misconceptions and obstacles that can make parents think twice before signing their kids up to the activity. With there being a bigger push around sailing education from prominent organisations such as the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) however, these perceived hurdles are gradually disappearing. We caught up with the Olympic medallist and Musto ambassador Ian Walker to understand more about introducing kids to sailing.
©Ian Roman/Getty Images/Volvo Ocean Race
WHAT AGE WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BEST AGE FOR CHILDREN TO LEARN SAILING? I started when I was eight years old. I’d say that this is a good age to truly understand and enjoy it. At this age, kids enjoy the feeling of independence on the water, of being in charge and control of something. They’re powered by a sense of achievement, which is little things like winning a prize or getting recognition for a task well done are real motivators for them.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE MAIN OBSTACLES WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING KIDS INTO SAILING? Understanding can be a real factor in putting people off sailing – its technical terminology can be a bit of a foreign language to kids and adults alike. What’s more, the weather being so unpredictable in the UK can be an impediment, but it can also help create a truly adept sailor. Because, the thing is with sailing is it’s not just about who’s the fastest or strongest; it’s the whole package: technique, courage and physical ability. The social side of things is also a huge bonus. Children gain confidence from being part of a community and interacting with other children who are interested in the same things as they are.
WOULD YOU SAY THERE’S BEEN A GREATER EMPHASIS ON INTRODUCING CHILDREN TO SAILING IN RECENT TIMES? Most definitely. The RYA OnBoard programme has introduced 50,000 kids to sailing. These same children have stayed in the programme to become instructors and teachers, showing their level of commitment and progression opportunities available in clubs such as this one.
THE RYA RECOMMEND A SAILING SCHEME LOGBOOK AND OTHER BEGINNER’S HANDBOOK. DO YOU KNOW ANY KID-FRIENDLY TRAINING BOOKS THAT COULD HELP ADVANCE CHILDREN LOOKING TO SAIL? Fernhurst books were invaluable to me when I was learning to sail and their collection is exhaustive. They provide a guide to everything from dinghy sailing to racing to kitesurfing. Training videos on RYA’s YouTube channel are also an invaluable resource. Reading interviews by sailing role models such as Ben Ainsle and Hannah Mills can also be a great source of inspiration to kids.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE FUNDAMENTAL RULES THAT A CHILD SHOULD MASTER ON A BOAT? You must prepare your boat properly Sail the right course Have a good time

TIPS FOR JUNIOR SAILORS
TIPS FOR PARENTS
1. Nothing beats time on the water to improve your sailing 2. Take the chance to crew for more experienced sailors
1. Encourage your child to sail with the most popular kids boats at your local club.
3. Try to understand why you have done well or not - maybe write some notes down or ask others
2. Take your kids to youth week or championship weeks where they will enjoy the social side
4. There are some excellent books to learn the science and tactics of sailing
3. Don’t rig or pack up your kids boats for them - they have to learn sometime
5. Learn to improve your boat handling from online videos
4. Help to make sure everything works well on their boats as it will make it more fun for them
6. Watch and learn from the more experienced kids - copying is OK!
5. Buy them a sailing book for Christmas!
7. Sailing different types of boat will improve your feel for them and the knowledge you gain 8. Sail as many club races as you can - you don’t have to travel hundreds of miles to learn the basics 9. You don’t need to be a rules expert but you need to learn some basics 10. Sailing should be about having fun so enjoy the social side and making friends

THE 3-LAYER SYSTEM Your environment influences your attire - this should never be truer than when you’re out at sea. A 3-Layer System is the most effective way to ensure insulation and protection against the elements, while maintaining the freedom of movement you need to perform. Pioneered by Musto, this system has since become the standard for the global sailing market as a result
of its efficient thermoregulatory properties. Working on the premise that water transmits heat up to thirty times faster than air, the key principle behind our system is to keep the body as dry as possible.
BASE LAYER
MIDDLE LAYER
OUTERLAYER
As the layer closest to your skin, a base layer must wick moisture away to minimise heat loss. It also needs to provide enough ventilation for you to remain comfortable during periods of exertion out on the seas.
The mid layer builds on the temperature regulation provided by the base. Its main purpose is to insulate; trapping dry, warm air and holding it close to the body.
From torrential rain to icy waves, you’re at the mercy of the elements when you’re sailing. An outer layer is your primary defence against the weather.
Your environment and the type of activity you are engaged in are two of the key factors that will inform your layering choices. If you are a VOR racer for example, you may find yourself requiring every layer from base to outer. However, on a leisurely sail around the marina on a fair day, a base layer would suffice, perhaps with a mid-layer over the top in case the temperature drops.
For example, if you are going to be highly active in very cold conditions for long periods of time you would be best suited to wearing an active base layer. These garments are body mapped to help regulate body temperature, they have antibacterial NILIT body fresh technology to minimise body odour and the seamless construction eliminates chaffing. On the other end of the scale if you are highly active in hot conditions and are likely to meet spray from the water, you would be better suited to a quick-dry base layer. These garments provide UPF protection, offer 4-way stretch and are sweat-wicking and fast-drying. The seams are also welded to eliminate chaffing.
It’s always wise to understand the importance of your base layer - there is a misconception in the sailing world that a runof-the-mill t-shirt can make a good base. However, a standard cotton t-shirt does not have odour control properties, UPF protection, it isn’t fast-drying nor does it have sweat-wicking properties. When highly active, cotton sticks to your skin and increases in weight when wet. Your base layer is synonymous to comfort, so understanding them is incredibly important, especially when spending long periods of time on a boat.
A good mid-layer should offer breathability and warmth depending on your level and type of activity. Sailors, such as VOR sailors, who are out at sea in changeable and extreme weather conditions should look for GORE-TEX® in their midlayers, as well as fleece linings. If sailing in fair weather, opt for a thermal fleece mid that also has a DWR finish for additional protection against the elements.
No two base layers are the same – their design and the fabrics qualities have been chosen according to their purpose.

CHOOSING YOUR BASE LAYERS
for the conditions can make a world of difference to your comfort on the water. Paired with a breathable mid layer and outer layer, the base layer is the foundation of the 3-Layer System. Choose the right layers for the climate and your level of activity to keep dry, comfortable and maintain your optimum core temperature so you can spend longer on the water.
Wear this base layer for highenergy activities in cold to freezing temperatures. Wicking fabric technology keeps you dry and body mapped variable knits regulate your temperature. The stretch fabric gives you complete freedom of movement while different knits reduce the risk of injury by supporting muscles and joints. BodyFresh Antibacterial NILITÂŽ technology minimises odour to keep you fresh so you can wear this base layer on all of your winter adventures.
Wear this base layer for high-energy outdoor adventure in freezing to mild climates. Merino wool is the pinnacle of natural fibres for active wear - moisture and temperature regulating, naturally anti-bacterial and incredibly soft too. You can wear it for days without it smelling. The unique wool fibres wick moisture away from the body to keep you dry and comfortable, trap vital warmth in cold climates and regulate your temperature as you heat up with exertion.
Wear this base layer in hot climates in low to high-energy activity. It provides UPF40 protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays for your summer adventures. Stay dry and comfortable with the wicking and fast drying fabric that has 4-way stretch for complete freedom of movement. Welded and flatlocked seams and super lightweight, silk touch fabric make this base layer barely felt against your skin.

FRANCK CAMMAS Franck Cammas is best known as one of the great offshore racers, not least when he won the Volvo Ocean Race at his first attempt, as skipper of Groupama. Now Cammas is focused on a very different challenge as he heads up Groupama Team France’s assault on the America’s Cup. “The challenge is very clear, and it’s the same for everybody,” says Cammas. “To win the toughest race in the world of sailing. The America’s Cup is our world championship, and if we are to succeed then we need to perform at the very highest level in every aspect of the campaign: the design and detailing on the boat, the technical set-up, and our physical efficiency.”
40
| GROUPAMA TEAM FRANCE |
That last point, physical efficiency, is a huge focus for every America’s Cup team getting to grips with the huge physical demands of the high-speed, wingmasted, hydrofoiling AC50 catamarans, capable of speeds up to 50 knots. “The wind chill is not a problem because the materials in modern technical clothing is very good, although the noise in the helmet is a problem,” says Cammas. “But breathability is very important as the guys on the boat are working at an average of 400 watts of physical output, so we need the body to be working at a comfortable temperature and not to overheat through exertion.” It’s some measure of the way the Cup has changed that teams are now using the same language as professional cycling teams in the Tour de France, where 400 watts of physical output is the typical number being generated by only the world’s very best road cyclists. “In a 20 minute race, the crew are operating at an average of around 400 watts, but with peaks of around 630 watts for 30 seconds during some of the really demanding parts of the race,” says Cammas. Aside from the typical demands of the sailor for high levels of waterproofness and breathability, however, is a new requirement for impact protection. Foiling is still a new science and the boats can suddenly spin out of control with very little notice, sometimes resulting in a nosedive that brings the boat to a dead
stop from 30 knots or more to zero in little more than the blink of an eye. If you can imagine going from 40 to zero in a car without a seat belt, then you have some idea why impact protection is a priority.
“THE CRASHES ARE HARD AND THEY HURT, SO WE NEED THE PROTECTION” Musto has been working hard with Cammas and Groupama Team France to develop foam protection that can be inserted into neoprene garments. “We need body protection pretty much everywhere,” says Cammas. “The crashes are hard and they hurt, so we need the protection but we also need to be able to retain full movement and flexibility. It’s a difficult design challenge but it is interesting working with Musto on this new problem.” The America’s Cup has always been about designing the fastest boat. The performance of the crew has mostly been secondary to the inherent speed of the boat. But most of the major elements in the 2017 America’s Cup - the hulls, the mast, the wing sail - are one-design. The performance of the crew, particularly the
physical performance, will have a direct correlation on the speed of the boat through the water. “We are undermanned, and we have a limited amount of energy available from the crew,” Cammas explains. “We need to use this energy efficiently as we don’t have enough energy to do everything in the race. We have to prioritise rake control or up and down foils during the manoeuvres. The sailors have to be in peak physical condition wearing clothes that enable them to operate at the optimum body temperature. The more energy you have, the faster you will be in the race.” Cammas knows his team will not be starting as one of the favourites in Bermuda, but he has defied expectations before. “We were the last to enter the game, we are limited in terms of time and money, so we have to learn everything more quickly than our rivals. In France we lost the culture, the experience of the Cup, because we didn’t have a team last time in 2013. So how we spend our time, the decisions we make, everything is very important because we have little opportunity for learning from our mistakes. In a way that is good, because our team has no time to engage with the politics of the America’s Cup. We are focused only on performance, on what it takes to make one of these boats go fast.”
