You Will Need
Assembling the Bag
Skip Stitch - sk Slip Stitch = ss Treble = tr
10mm Bamboodle (Crochet Hook) 2 Spools of Boodles (Note you will need approx. 1.5 spools) Pair of Boodles handles Approx size of finished project: 30cm x 24cm The bag is made from 5 separate pieces; two front/back panels, two side panels and a base. All are made using the ‘tweedy’ stitch with the exception of the base which is made using basic double crochet. The pieces are crocheted in back and forth rows, turning at the end of each row. They are then assembled and joined together with slip stitches and the handles attached with the double crochet stitch.
Getting Started - Front and Back Panels (Make Two)
Foundation Chain - Ch25, plus ch1. Row 1. 1dc into the 2nd chain from the hook, dc to end. Turn (25 sts). Row 2. Ch1, 1dc into 1st st, *ch2, sk2, 1dc into next st*, repeat from * to * to end. Turn. Row 3. Ch3, 1tr into 1st st, *sk2, 3tr into dc st*, repeat from * to *, ending last rep with 2tr. Turn. Row 4 to 11. Row 2 and 3 form the pattern and are repeated through to row 11. Cut yarn and pull through to fasten. Weave in ends.
Side Panels
(Make Two) Foundation Chain - Ch7, plus ch1. Row 1. 1dc into the 2nd chain from the hook, dc to end. Turn (7 sts). Row 2. Ch1, 1dc into 1st st, *ch2, sk2, 1dc into next st*, repeat from * to * to end. Turn. Row 3 to 11. Row 2 and 3 form the pattern and are repeated through to row 11. Cut yarn and pull through to fasten. Weave in ends.
Base Panel
(Make One) Foundation Chain.
Ch25, plus ch1.
Row 1. 1dc into the 2nd chain from the hook, 1dc into each chain to the end. Turn. Row 2.
Ch1, 1dc into each st to end. Turn
Row 3 to 7. Repeat row 2. Cut yarn and pull through to fasten. Weave in ends.
Place the base panel on top of back panel, wrong sides together, aligning the bottom edge of the back panel with a long side of the base panel. Slip stitch the two panels together by working the slip stitch through the base panel and into each aligning chain stitch on the bottom edge of the back panel. This means the slip stitches will show on the base of the bag. When you get to the end of the back panel, place a side panel wrong sides together with the base panel. Again align the bottom edge of the side panel to the short edge of the base panel. Continue to work slip stitches into the two panels joining them together. Do the same with the front panel and again with the final side panel. You will have joined all the panels around the base panel with one continuous row of slip stitches. Cut the yarn and weave in the ends. Now join the side panels to the front and back panels with the slip stitch. Work with the side panel uppermost so that the stitches are visible on the side panels only. This means on one edge of the side panel you will work from top edge of bag to the bottom and on the other side you will rotate it and work from bottom edge to top. The pattern mixes rows of double crochet with rows of treble crochet, so place your slip stitches at regular intervals going into the end stitches rather than into the spaces made between the stitches. Weave in ends.
Attaching the Handles
Work out where you need to position the handles so they are in the centre. Attach the handles by tying the yarn to the back of a stitch. Use double crochet stitches to attach the handle to each stitch along the top of the front panel, about 18 stitches. Tip. Poke the yarn through the slot in the handle as the hook is too big to fit through it. Repeat with the other handle and the back panel. Weave in all ends. Due to the unique nature of Boodles(TM) yarn, project results may vary as the width/texture of the yarn can differ! When making projects we recommend you purchase all your needed yarn at the same time, as colour matching from different spooling productions cannot be guaranteed.
